Like other games in the Zelda series, your health system is determined by hearts, with more to collect as you progress through the game. However, there are two things that are largely different from the other Zelda games that you may have played.
- There are no Heart Pieces, just Heart Containers. This means that for every one of these you find, you will gain another heart on your life bar, rather than collecting them in pieces as is in the case in other Zelda games.
- Heart containers are no longer items specific to Link. The S.S. Linebeck also has its own proprietary heart life meter. “Heart Containers” for the S.S. Linebeck come as you build up sets with certain parts, although there are no physical Heart Containers for the ship.
Heart Containers for Link
You can get a total of 16 hearts for Link. Some containers are retrieved through clearing certain obstacles in specific side quests and mini-games, some of them are stolen from the bosses Link defeats, and three of them are freebies that Link begins the game with. Here’s a list of the hearts and the different ways to acquire them. Note: This does not imply an order in which you need to get them. This is simply a way of counting
them.
For a more comprehensive list of bosses and strategies to defeat them, have a look at our bosses page.
