Below you can find information and strategies on how to deal with the numerious baddies you’ll find throughout your quest; including mini-bosses.
The Four Poe Sisters (Mini-boss)
Location: Spirit House in Ikana Canyon
You’ll fight each one of the sisters individually, lucky for you. First up is Amy, the Green Poe Sister. All you need is a few well-placed arrows and she’s…even more history (being a ghost already). Beth, the Red Sister, and Jo, the Blue Sister are both fairly easily dispatched with your sword. Just mind their spin attacks. Meg, the Purple and final Poe Sister is a little trickier than her relatives. She’ll create three imposters and circle you. Use either arrows or your hookshot on the one true Meg, and the four Sisters will all be reunited in the…after-afterlife.
Armos Statue
Location: Ikana Ruins and Stone Tower Temple
The Armos Statue looks like any other decorative statue, standing innocently enough in their environment. If you get too close and touch one, however, it will spring to life and in a fit of rage do it’s best to crush you by hopping and spinning around. The easiest way to dispatch these foes is to don the Goron Mask and deliver two well-timed fire punches. Land both hits and the stone enemies will be dust.
Baby Dodongo
Bad Bat
Beamos
Location: Stone Tower Temple
Statue-like enemies who have a gaze that can kill. If they spot you they’ll shoot a laser beam your way that can only be blocked with the Mirror Shield. They are only vulnerable to bombs, so you’ll have to toss a well-timed one their way to take them out. If you don’t have any bombs handy, put on the Blast Mask and get up close and personal.
Big Eeno
Location: Snowy parts of Termina Field
Quite obviously, these enemies are a larger form of a regular Eeno. They’ll crawl out of the snowy ground and, like that bully in elementary school, throw snowballs at you. Being made out of snow, Eenos are obviously more vulnerable to fire attacks, so use Fire Arrows, Bombs, or the Goron Fire Punch. When you beat the Big Eeno it will split into three regular Eenos that need to be taken care of as well.
Big Octo
Big Poe (Mini-boss)
Bio Deku Baba
Bio Mini Baba
Location: Swamp Area and Woodfall Temple
These little guys can only really be defined as ‘enemies’ in the loosest sense of the word. To actually do any damage to Link you’d have to walk him right into one in a rather deliberate move. If you feel like killing them for fun, a simple sword slash will do.
Black Boe
Location: Woodfall Temple
Not particularly powerful, these enemies pose a threat based on the fact that they are small and hard to spot, as they lurk in the shadows waiting for potential victims to come along. They also usually emerge in large groups, meaning the best strategy for warding them off is to simply swing your sword like a madman.
Blue Bubble
Location: All over Termina, Overworld and Dungeons
Whatever you do, don’t touch this enemy, or let it touch you. If you do, Link will become jinxed and be unable to draw any of his weapons. To get rid of the jinx you’ll have to either wait it out or play the Song of Storms. Since you want to avoid contact with this enemy, the best strategy is to attack from afar, using arrows or another ranged attack. One hit will remove the bubble; the second will put the enemy to rest.
Bombchu
Location: Ikana Road
What must have possessed the Goddesses to create a creature such as the Bombchu, I don’t know. What possessed the people of Hyrule to develop an item based on these critters, I don’t know either. Kamikaze warriors in every sense, if a Bombchu catches sight of you it will proceed to run to you as fast as it can, and explode when it gets close enough. Either block their charge with your shield or simply avoid them. Attempting to actually confront them is akin to having a death wish.
Deep Python
Deku Baba
Location: Swamp Area and Woodfall Temple
A staple of the 3D Zelda games, they haven’t changed much since their introduction in Ocarina of Time. Their somewhat weak attacks are more of an annoyance than an actual threat. Just hit them with your sword in between their attacks. Cut them the right way and you’ll even get a Deku Stick out of the deal.
Desbreko
Location: Great Bay Temple
The bigger and meaner relative of the Skullfish, these skeletal fish operate in much the same fashion. If they sense you in the water they’ll give chase and attack as much as possible. Since there’s usually more than a few lurking beneath the surface of the water, they can do quite a bit of damage to unwary players. Take the time to use the Zora Boomerangs or Arrows to take out the ones you can see before diving in for a swim.
Dinolfos (Mini-boss)
Location: Woodfall and Snowhead Temples
These enemies are lizard-like foes that walk upright and wield sharp and pointy weapons with a fair amount of skill. The best way to engage these warriors in battle is to Z-target them and block or dodge their attacks until you see an opening for you to mount an offense of your own. After you land your attack be sure to move quickly out of the way, as they will spit fire at you in return.
Dexihand
Dodongo
Location: Termina Field
Slow moving, but large and powerful, the Dodongo doesn’t seem to mind the cold environment they have settled, despite being a fire-breathing lizard. They are so slow that they are hardly worth the effort it takes to kill them, but doing so will provide you with an ample reward of rupees. Their tails are their weak spot, and they are quite vulnerable to the Goron Fire Punch.
Dragonfly
Location: Deku Palace Area and Woodfall Temple
As with most airborne enemies, Dragonflies are best dealt with from a distance using arrows or other ranged weapons. Let them get too close and you’re in for a shock from their electrified tails, which will also knock Link to the floor for several seconds.
Eeno
Eyegore (Mini-boss)
Fire Keese
Location: Dungeons, sometimes Termina Field and other open areas
Due to being surrounded by flames this variety of bat-like Keese deals out double the amount of damage as its normal counterpart. For every closed door there is an open one, however, as the flames make it far easier to spot from a far. Z-target it from a distance and take them down with an arrow before it can dive into you.
Floormasters
Location: Ikana Castle
These creepy crawly hands will do quite a bit of damage if they get a hold of you, so try not to get grabbed. If there happens to be a light source near by, use your mirror shield to reflect some light on to it, and it will split into three smaller hands, which can be killed in fewer attacks. If no light is available, you can use Light Arrows instead. If you don’t have those, well, there’s always the old hack and slash standby.
Freezard
Garo
Location: Ikana
This is an enemy that you actually have to seek out, as a hooded and cloaked Garo warrior will never appear before a stranger. Put on the Garo Mask and eventually a warrior will emerge and challenge you to a fight. Fend off their attacks with your shield or sword, and wait for an opportunity to give back. When you see an opening, take it and let your sword do the talking. Defeat the Garo and it will give you a useful bit of information.
Garo Master (Mini-boss)
Location: Stone Tower Temple
There’s a reason this enemy is called the Master. Larger, faster, and more skilled than a normal Garo warrior, the Garo Master is a dangerous foe indeed. Keep him Z-targeted and keep your shield up to fend off his normal attacks, dodging his more powerful ones. When you see an opening, freeze him with an Ice Arrow and then quickly follow up with a sword attack. Eventually the Master will fall, but he has one more trick up his sleeve. Make sure to back away quickly as he will explode after the battle.
Gecko (Mini-boss)
Location: Woodfall Temple and Great Bay Temple
Gecko is a rather quick frog-like enemy, so you’ll have to use well-timed sword attacks if you want to defeat him. When you fight him in the different temples he will call upon allies to help in fighting you. See the Gecko & Snapper section and the Mad Jelly section for tips on beating them.
Gecko & Snapper (Mini-boss)
Location: Woodfall Temple
The old adage “divided we fall” applies here, as to beat this duo you will need to separate them. To do so, place a bomb in their path to dismount Gecko from his turtle perch, or as a Deku Scrub shoot yourself out from a flower when Snapper is directly above you. Once you’ve separated them use your arrows to shoot Gecko down from the ceiling.
Gerudo Pirate (Mini-boss)
Location: Gerudo Fortress
Much like their Thieving counterparts, the Gerudo Pirates are no pushovers when it comes to swordplay. The trick to beating them is to simply defend yourself from their attacks and wait for them to let their guard down enough for you to get some licks in of your own. Patience is the way of the warrior.
Giant Bee
Location: Beehives throughout Termina
While not particularly strong, the Bee’s of Termina are just as obnoxious as their real-life counterparts. Once they spot you and begin their attack, it is unlikely you’ll be able to lose them (standing still won’t work). At the same time, it doesn’t take more than a sword swipe or two to dispatch them.
Gibdo
Location: Ikana Village, Ikana Well
Being wrapped in bandages doesn’t make the Gibdo any less terrifying than their ReDead relatives. If it spots you it will freeze you where you stand, jump on you, and proceed to drain away your life. Getting in close for a sword fight is a rather ineffective method, so keep your distance and use Fire Arrows to light these mummies up.
Gold Skulltula
Location: Skulltula Houses (Swamp, Great Bay)
Gold Skulltula’s aren’t much of an enemy. Slow and rather stationary, they are mostly important in that they are associated with curses. If you kill all the Gold Skulltula’s in an area, collecting the magic tokens they leave behind, you will free someone from a curse that was placed on them.
Gomess (Mini-boss)
Location: Stone Tower Temple
First thing’s first, to get to the Grim Reaper wannabe Gomess you must first get rid of the bats that surround it. After you’ve done that, it may be a good idea to put on the Bunny Hood, as Gomess is rather quick on its…well it doesn’t have feet. Plug the phantom with a Light Arrow and follow it up with a sword slash. Avoid its scythe attacks and Gomess will vanish before you know it.
Green ChuChu
Location: Termina Field, Dungeons
These enemies are about as dangerous as they look: not at all. Transparent blobs of jelly, killing one is its own reward, as it will leave behind a green potion to help refill your magic meter. While they may appear to be a different, yellow color when they appear in dungeons, they are indeed the same as their outdoor counterparts. Whether it is yellow, green, blue or in all the colours of the rainbow the ChuChu still represents little or no threat at all to you.
Guay
Hiploop
Ice Keese
Location: Snowhead Area, Snowhead Temple
Like its fire brethren, the Ice Keese is a bat enemy that is probably the most dangerous of all the Keese. If it touches you with its icy fire, you’ll be frozen on the spot, life sapping away and exposed to further attacks from other enemies. As with all the other Keese, the best strategy is to Z-target from a distance and use ranged items and attacks to get rid of it before it even has a chance to attack you.
Ikana King (Mini-boss)
Location: Ikana Castle
The skeletal remains of the late King Yigorse of Ikana, fighting the Ikana King isn’t that different from fighting his skeletal servants you defeated prior to fighting the King himself. The King does have stronger attacks so keep an eye on your life meter if you’re taking a lot of hits. To beat him just knock him out the same as his servants and reflect sunlight onto him with the Mirror Shield.
Iron Knuckle (Mini-boss)
Location: Ikana Graveyard, Inside the Moon
The Iron Knuckle is a huge, armored, axe-wielding enemy that has appeared in most Zelda games, this one no exception. This incarnation of the classic foe can be weakened right off the bat by playing the Song of Storms, after which you’ll be relying entirely on your fighting skill. Make sure to dodge, not block, its attacks as your shield will do nothing to protect against its mighty blows. When you see an opening for an attack, take it, and eventually you’ll defeat this monster.
Keese
Location: Various Temples and Caverns
Slightly stronger than a Bad Bat, Keese are bat-like enemies that tend to gather and attack in large numbers. While they aren’t as strong as their Fire or Ice counterparts, it is still recommended that you get rid as many of them as possible from a distance, as once they all begin attacking at once they are difficult to fend off.
King’s Servants (Mini-boss)
Location: Ikana Castle
To beat these skeletal guards of their King you must first burn away the curtains that cover the windows using your Fire Arrows. Then do battle with the Servants until they collapse in a pile of bones. They aren’t dead yet, though, as they will quickly recover and reconstruct themselves. To make sure they stay down, while they are down stand in the sunlight and use your mirror shield to reflect light onto them. Repeat until they go down for good.
Leever
Location: Termina Field and Great Bay
Somewhat plant-like green enemies, Leevers are perhaps one of the most annoying foes in the game. They will emerge from the sands and give constant chase to Link until they smash themselves against them, dealing minor damage. They are easily defeated by most attacks, but if you don’t want to have to think about them just ride Epona, as any that get too close will simply be trampled underfoot.
Like Like
Location: Great Bay Area
According to a citizen from Hyrule, this enemy would make a great leader. Well, the exact quote was “World leaders and shield-eaters have many likes-a-like!” Whatever that means. Get too close to this blob-like tubular enemy and you’ll be swallowed whole and then spat back out again, minus one shield. Attack it with sword, Zora boomerangs and fins, arrows, almost anything to defeat it, just don’t let it swallow you. If it does eat you, killing it will release your shield from its stomach.
Mad Armos
Location: Stone Tower Temple
Slightly bigger than a normal Armos, the Mad Armos will actually lift itself high into the air (somehow) and try to crush Link from above when you wander too close. Too bring the Armos back to earth, shoot it with a Light arrow and then quickly step aside, as it will flip over and come down with brutal force. If you manage to avoid its crushing attack it will hit the ground so hard it will explode (somehow).
Mad Jelly (Mini-boss)
Location: Great Bay Temple
Gecko is swimming in this puddle of jelly-like ooze. It will climb to the ceiling and then detach itself in an effort to crush you from above. To avoid that unpleasant fate simply freeze the blob with an Ice Arrow, then fight the emerged Gecko before it can call the Jelly back into action.
Mad Scrubs
Location: Deku Palace
Similar, but not nearly as personable, as Business Scrubs, the Mad Scrub is essentially a shrub with eyes and a snout that spits Deku Nuts. The Mad Scrub will pop out of a flower in the ground and bombard you with a mad flurry of Deku Nuts. Block the nuts with your shield and use a long-range weapon to trim the Scrub down to size.
Mini Baba
Nejiron
Location: Ikana Road
Best described as a Goron imposter, this enemy will emerge from the ground looking very much like a friendly rolled-up Goron. Walk up to it to give it a friendly pat or to prod it with your sword and you’ll be treated to a nice explosion right next to you. The best tactic is to simply avoid going near one, but if you must kill it, use your bow and arrows from a safe distance.
Octorok
Location: Ikana Canyon, Great Bay Temple
This water-based enemy is not unlike a Deku Scrub that has taken to the water, except it spits rocks instead of Deku Nuts. Get too close to this enemy and it will dive beneath the surface to avoid your wrath. To defeat them simply stand back some distance and use your shield to deflect their rocks back at them (they are too silly to dodge them). If you have trouble getting a rock deflected in the right direction Z-target one first.
Pea Hat
Pea Hat Larva
Poe
Location: Stone Tower Temple
These lantern-carrying ghosts will appear out of thin air to harass Link. Trying to Z-target it will simply make it vanish, so don’t bother trying. Both the sword and arrows are effective against this enemy, just be sure to kill it quickly, or it will begin to use its spin attack, which is rather dangerous indeed.
Red Bubble
Red ChuChu
Location: Termina Field and Road to the Swamp
A jelly blob just like its green counterpart, this ChuChu is instead a red color, but that doesn’t make it any less of a joke. Kill it the same way, and if your life meter isn’t full you’ll be rewarded with some hearts. If you have full health you may get some rupees for your troubles.
ReDead
Location: Ikana Castle
ReDeads are the zombies of the Zelda world, and are just as creepy. If a ReDead spots you it will proceed to freeze you in place with its gaze, jump aboard, and begin to suck the life out of you. Your sword will work as well as anything to kill them, but if you don’t feel like fighting you can put on the Captain’s Hat or Gibdo Mask, and the ReDeads will ignore you.
Sharp (Mini-boss)
Location: Ikana Canyon
The evil composer brother of Flat, Sharp and his brother were once said to be the composers for the Royal Family of Ikana. Sharp then decided to sell his soul to the Devil and became evil. His soul remains in the Ikana area, and attacking him normally will do nothing. To defeat Sharp you must first find and speak with Flat, who will teach you how to defeat Sharp; by playing the Song of Storms. Do so and the battle will be over before it even begins.
Shell Blade
Location: Great Bay Area
A Shell Blade is essentially a clam with sharp spines along one side. Like a clam, they have a soft and vulnerable inside that is their weak spot. To get them to expose this, you must get close enough that they prepare to attack you, revealing their inside in the process. Z-target and use a well-placed arrow or sword swing to kill them. They aren’t that tricky, but if they are in a group and manage to swarm you, they will become a serious threat.
Skull Fish
Skull Keeta (Mini-boss)
Location: Ikana Graveyard
This is a bone yard fight against a giant skeleton enemy. First off, to get the fight started you must wake the dead by playing the Sonata of Awakening. Your foe will rise from his eternal slumber and promptly begin to run away. Equip the Bunny Hood for extra speed and give chase. Shoot Fire Arrows at him to slow him down, and as soon as you are within range start attacking with your sword. The attacks he throws back your way aren’t much, so you shouldn’t have too much trouble taking this skeleton down.
Skulltula
Location: Various Temples
Giant spider-like creatures with skulls that act as a shell will drop down at Link as he explores dungeons, blocking your path. For some reason this foe decides to present you with its weak spot, as they will spin to reveal their soft underbelly. With an invitation like that, how can you not just swing your sword into it?
Snapper
Location: Woodfall Temple
These turtles are of a fairly quick variety, and they won’t hesitate to spin towards you, spikes ready for a fairly painful collision. To defeat the Snappers you have to expose their soft underbelly for attack by either planting a bomb near it, getting up close and personal while wearing the Blast Mask, or exploding up from a flower as Deku Link.
Stalchild
Location: Ikana Graveyard
These skeletons are all that remain of the soldiers of Ikana after being cursed. Luckily their fighting skills have deteriorated with time, as they don’t offer much of one these days. Their attacks are slow and laughably easy to block or dodge. Two quick hits with your sword will end their baneful existence.
Takkuri
Location: Termina Field, near Milk Road
There is only one Takkuri in all of Termina, and it spends all its time in one location. To do battle with it is to take a great risk, but with also a perhaps large payoff. If you manage to kill the bird you’ll be rewarded with a quick 200 rupees. If you don’t manage to kill it, and it gets a couple good attacks in, you’ll end up losing some pretty valuable items. The safest way to engage this beastie is to Z-target it and attack with your sword, gathering the rupees it drops until it eventually dies. If you end up losing an item in the process, you can always purchase it back from the Curiosity Shop in Clock Town…for a price.
Tektite
Location: Mountain Village and Goron Shrine
This blue, four-legged, spider-like critter is another mainstay in the Zelda franchise. Tektites will jump up and down to try to engage you in battle, but they are slow enough that they are quite easily avoided. They are also just as susceptible as anything to a few sword slashes.
Wallmaster
Location: Ikana, Stone Tower Temple
While it looks similar to a Floormaster (basically, it looks like a giant hand), the Wallmaster is far sneakier. The Wallmaster will drop from the walls attempting to get a hold of Link. If he catches you, you’ll wind up at the start of the dungeon. Luckily, they are fairly easy to avoid, as a telltale sound and shadow will appear before they drop. Step out of its path and dispatch it with your sword when it drops.
Wart (Mini-boss)
Location: Great Bay Temple and Secret Shrine
The boss proper is a giant green eye, but before you can get to it you must fend off the henchmen, which take the form of…pinkish bubbles. Fend them off and remove them from the boss by attacking with your sword, until the boss is revealed enough to be attacked directly. Swing your sword into its eye (the only part that will take damage, and only when open and exposed) and the battle is done.
White Wolfos
Location: Snowhead Area
These wolf enemies are quite vicious. It’s best to stay on the defensive here, blocking the Wofos’ attacks and waiting for your opening. This opening often comes right before the Wolfos is getting ready to attack, be ready for it. It’ll take a couple of solid hits to get this enemy to go down.
Wizrobe (Mini-boss)
Location: Woodfall, Snowhead and Stone Tower Temples and Secret Shrine
This mini-boss shows up more than once throughout the game, but the strategy is mostly the same each time you face him. It’s a two-stage battle. During the first stage Wizrobe will move around using the teleporters, all you have to do is spot him when he pauses to attack and fire an arrow his way. In the second stage Wizrobe will create duplicates of himself, and you have to make sure to attack the correct one. You’ll be able to spot the right one because it’ll be spinning around. Once you’ve spotted him run over and let loose with your sword.
Wolfos
Yellow ChuChu
Location: Termina Field, Great Bay Temple
The Yellow ChuChu actually looks like a completely transparent ChuChu inside dungeons, while out on Termina Field it will have a more yellow look to it. All in all it is easy to be confused by the different ChuChus, and what kind they really are, but this does not really matter as they can all be defeated easily with your sword. Out on Termina Field the Yellow ChuChu will have arrows inside its jelly body, which can be collected once it dies. Inside dungeons however, they do not carry anything with them, and are used mainly to be freezed into blocks of ice.
