I said in my introduction post that I loved to cook. So, of course, I was quick to pick up on this little number just in time for Thanksgiving. Remember in Twilight Princess, you’d think you were finding the boss key, but you were really finding something for Yeto to put in his soup? Have you ever really wondered about that soup – how it had magical healing abilities? How Link was able to down something with fish, pumpkin, and goat cheese? That’s what I was thinking when I came across this recipe on a blog called The Geeky Chef.

Yeto looking over his fine creation.
The blog’s owner swapped out the Reekfish for Halibut Filet, making it seem a little bit less disgusting, so I thought I’d try making it. In the interest of saving money, I switched out the Halibut for Tilapia, and I had some pumpkin parts saved from Halloween, so I used those (along with just a little bit of grated pumpkin “innards” to add flavor).
To tell you the truth, it wasn’t half bad – so hit the jump for cooking directions and a summary of the recipe, and get cooking!
Recipe Summary (from The Geeky Chef):
So now it’s time to change it up a bit and do a more obscure and savory dish. This one appeared in the newest Zelda game, Twilight Princess, in the Snowpeak temple as a soup that Yeto makes for his sick wife, Yeta. The soup, thanks to it’s reekfish base, has healing properties that increase as Link finds more ingredients to add throughout the temple, namely a pumpkin and goat cheese from Link’s hometown, Ordon. I took a basic pumpkin soup and made some modifications. I decided to make the fish stock and the filet optional because while I think pumpkin and goat cheese are a match made in heaven (or Hyrule), fish and pumpkin and goat cheese might seem like a strange mix for some. Fish or no fish, this soup makes for a perfect winter dinner!
Ingredients
2 pounds seeded and peeled pie pumpkin, diced
¾ c. white onion, chopped
4 cloves garlic, cloves cut into quarters
4 ½ c. fish stock (alternative: chicken or vegetable stock)
½ c. Goat Cheese or as desired
1 ¼ c. cream (optional)
Fresh basil
¼ c. olive oil
Salt to taste
Pepper to taste
1 halibut filet or any white fish (optional)
Cooking Instructions/Directions
Roast pumpkin, onions, and garlic in a roasting pan with a bit of olive oil. In a soup pot, put the roasted items and turn to medium heat. Add 3/4 of the stock and simmer for up to 45 minutes, or until fully cooked. Put in a food processor and blend until smooth. Blend in small amounts of the goat cheese along with the cream if desired. Adjust thickness with the leftover stock. Add more cream if desired and finish seasoning with herbs, salt, and pepper. If you add a filet of your chosen fish, pan-fry it first with oil, salt and pepper, then add it to the soup.

Tingle’s Rosy Rupeeland was released only in Japan and Europe, never making it to the USA due to lackluster sales. Surprisingly, the game was well-received among those who did play and review the game. You play as Tingle, a 35-year-old (and single) man lost in the world. Guided by the mysterious figure Uncle Rupee, Tingle fills a mystical spring with money and gain access to the wonderful Rupeeland, a paradise where nobody has to work. Along the way, hire body guards to protect Tingle – but from what? All may not be as it seems in Tingle’s quest for monetary gain, and Rupeeland just might not be so rosy after all...
Well it seems I'm off to the store to pick up some ingredients…
Yeah, much luck with that… B(
Awesome idea! Might actually cook this, I love pumpkin soup!
thank you soooo much for this recipe!!! i got a pumpkin this year TO MAKE A SOUP! i am very inspired by Zelda in my day to day life since 1988, so this is very fitting!
alright. now this is cool. ZU has it's own personal chef now. that's awesome. keep an eye out for more Zelda-related dishes, Caleb, I see a promising staple in this site's future.in fact, you should have your own segment n the ZUcast; Cooking with Caleb! that'd be so cool.
I second Cooking with Caleb!
I third it!
Instead of Zelda-related dishes why don't we call them Zeldishes.
I Fourth it! I hope for an Ocarina Steak, like in a few articles back how to make food out of Gannon.
That's excellent! I'm glad you thought of that.
This might actually happen, I emailed Cody, and he said "as long as it's Zelda related
."
I'm making this. For thanksgiving. And I'm going to force my family to eat it. Muahahahaha!
All that we have to do now is find Grandma and force her to give us her recipe, then we will be unstopible! Or at lest full of soup ( Mum, soup…)
I bet she makes the exact same soup as yeto
Dude, imagine if you could eat it out of a bottle. Then i would be in a perfect world.
Grandma's soup looks more like chicken broth.
Too bad I can't cook….
yummy yummy! all it needs is some tastey Dodongo's Carvern rocks and its perfect!
don't forget the lon lon milk!
I don't care if it tastes good or not, I'm making it and will keep the recipe forever!
I'm making this for my friends' huge Thanksgiving get-together on Saturday. THIS IS EPIC.
Great! I just baked around 6 cups of pumkin meat a couple of weeks back, and I really have no idea what to do with it (except for pie).
Reekfish resembles salmon, and I know salmon is not white meat, but would it still taste good? I'm asking because I don't like to eat fish, so I hardly know what's good and what's not good with fish.
I’m really happy you guys posted this. Thanks!
It seems with all the random ingredients most people wouldn't want to try it, but I bet it would taste great!
I'm so glad you posted this. Thanks!
This is actually the recipe that inspired me to create geekychef.com in the first place. There wasn't a recipe for it anywhere on the internet at the time, so I just made one myself. Zelda is my all time favorite game and you can definitely expect there to be more Zelda inspired recipes appearing on my blog in the future.
Again, thanks!
No problem. Just feel free to submit any more tips if you have any nintendo/zelda/gaming related dishes!
Yes! I am So going to go and make this for dinner, and breakfast, maybe Lunch…and maybe even for supper…No wait not supper…Umm late night snack is not right either…LETS GO MAKE THIS NOW!!!
Joko tree you have a crap name I know I had that name because I am the Real Joko.
Beat it, Nitemares.
You might have had a big mouth when you still had a ID profile, and before that even, but now you're just being a troll. I sat back and watched you bully everyone before, but now you pick on 15 year-olds? That is beneath even you. You might could have picked on Cody all the time you were there, but now it's time for you to get a life, and get lost.
Did you know that you can block an IP address from a site? Yeah, you can. I can probably convince Jason or Cody to do it. So you might want to stop picking on people. I have enough of that to deal with now.
I'm not a troll I'm just very angry that someone would steal my name and turn Joko into a bad name. But what do you know my life can get worse why don't I just end everything and stop being.
No, i'm the real Joko! And so is Get Lost! And Kieth! And MrBaconodSock!
Dude I take that back you can keep the name so you've got an item music plays you've got an optional name.
darn my stupidity the comment that i sent on top of this one should go under the Decrepit nightmare comment under Joko tree.
If you remember, a few articles ago someone who kept using your name? That was me. Sorry, i'ts just the other guy did it, and I thought it would be funny. Looking back it was very dumb, so I'm sorry.
P.S.- I was also 12 year old kid. And I am 12.
What the. Wait hold on a second I just changed my name to this yesterday I used to be Joko tree but then someone else used that name and I changed my name to this and someone else is useing this name. Right fine This is the last time I do this I will change my name into something perfectly me.
Sounds yummy! Though I think I might mix things up and substitute Salmon for the fish, since it seems like the closest real-life fish to a Reekfish, rather than Halibut or Tilapia (which I commonly refer to as poo-fish, due to their diet). Plus, I much prefer salmon over those other kinds of fish.
Not sure what the salmon's distinct flavor will do to the soup though – it'll be a mystery!
One of the comments on the blog I got this from said that he had substituted with salmon, and that it tasted amazing, so give it a try.
Wait, isn't salmon an actual fish in TP?
I've got to try this.
Dang! I really have to make it! When I go exploring and encounter some Wolfos, I'll just drink it and restore some hearts! It is a good think I went on that side-quest to get that bottle!
That was a pretty weak joke.
Not as weak as a Dodongo!
I bet you've waited a long time to tell people that without seeming like you randomly screamed 'I live next door or a supermarket!' lol
When I first saw that soup in the game and watched how it gradually changed with each added ingredient, I thought : "That looks delicious!"
…Now I can try it!
Awesome I'm so gonna go out and get the stuff to make this!
im not afrad o jue you bib ugly
is dum as but LOLOLOLOL IM SOOOOOOOO FUNNY!!!!!!!!!!!111111
Dude, screw hells kitchen.
Well, i'm 12, so I wont be able to make this. But still sounds good!
Yeah you can! Get someone with more experience to help you if you need to.
Well, I gave this puppy a try. Overall it's a great tasteing soup. Flavors are rich and completmenty and texture was smooth. However they felt the fish was a little strong and that white fish would've been better. Next time I make this soup, I'd probably do just that.
Oh, eham… "they" mean my family.
Ooh, a ham! I love ham!
…And Zelda more! I should try putting ham into this TP soup when I try it out. Not as a replacement with anything; just as a little addiction, er, I mean addition.
Oh my gosh, mom is that you? lol
My mom suggested smoked ham should be put into this soup, too.
That was my favorite Dungeon in Twilight Princess cause it's a house!
I sadly can not try this because I am alergic to Pumpkins
Does anyone know if/how you can use canned pumpkin in this recipe? I'm not skilled at cutting up pumpkins really…. but I really want to try this recipe
Oh I should clarify- If it were me making it using canned pumpkin, I would not use a roasting pan and oven, since that's mainly for the pumpkin. Since you're not raosting the pumpkin, just saute the onions and garlic in the oil in the pot and do everything in the pot. It'll be one less dish to wash.
Don't listen to that silly Margar. She's not all there, just smile and nod;).
(<3)
I would still recomend using the roasting pan. Since this is a dark soup it gives you lots of opportunity to add flavour. By roasting the vegetables you let all the sugars carmamelize which will drastically enhance the flavour. This can be done in the pot on the stove, but roasting in the oven is a much better way and helps prevent burning since it's more even and constant heat. But still be sure to check on them and stirm them around!
To add onto that, i would also roast the canned pumkin (note: be sure to used canned pumpkin, not canned pumkin pie filling). much like tomato paste, it is cooked, but doesn't have the nicest flavour in the world. Add it in with your vegetables wether you use a roasting pan or do it right in the pot. Make sure it gets some really nice brown colour on it.
Thanks Mattocks! I made sure to add the disclaimer, "If it were me…" in my reply, but I know my soup would not turn out nearly as tasty as yours
Just reading this takes me back to playing the dungeon. Every time Link brought back an ingredient, Yeto shoved Link across the room, and as an apology, (sort of) he would let him taste the soup.
Well I think this is quite the intresting dish. Ive always been one to mix food and try new things, and im a loving Zelda fan so I asked my mom if it was possible to make this for tomarrow and she sounded intrested. DADADADAAAAAAAA!
Oh my goodness, who would have thought that a freaky Zelda dish would become real…? Interesting ^^
Heh…I may just have to try this….XD I've always loved pumpkin soup, and wondered hwo this would really taste! XD
This was…interesting…I can't say it was bad, it just had a really weird flavor. The goat cheese had an after-flavor very reminiscent of sour cream.
I thought I would find a recipe for this somewhere on the internet!
