Focus of Power

Part 2: The Return of Vaati (by Jack M.)

Link, oddly calm among the panic that was Hyrule Castle, rushed towards the castle walls, bombs in hand. Blast after blast resounded throughout the seemingly frozen halls. Soldiers charged with spears, shot with cannons, and pushed with all their strength. Sadly, all attempt was in vain. The power of the Triforce was too great to be destroyed.

A blast of wind blew through the barrier, sending soldiers flying through the air.

Darkness crept over the castle, startling the leaders of the land. An unfamiliar voice, one sounding as ancient as Hyrule itself, sounded.

“Surrender your land, or be trapped forever! My people have been forgotten. We will stand for it no more,” it cried.

“What race has been forgotten,” the leaders cried. “What have we done wrong?”

An old legend came to Link’s mind, a tale from long ago. “The Minish people! The race who saved us long ago! Maybe they have survived!”

A thick shadow formed where the Triforce once stood. A single eye appeared in it’s place. Vaati had escaped from his seal.

“Fools! You are all fools! I have been sealed in the Four Sword for one-hundred years! And look. Link’s decedent is here to witness this glorious event. The Minish have been corrupted as I was. We will march on your land and destroy your people until you are mere legends. The Minish will rule once more!”

“Why?” Zelda cried. “Why do you want to destroy us?”

“Your ancestor tried to seal me away. She obviously failed. The leaders of this land gather to feast and discuss, becoming hopelessly trapped! The Triforce was easy to take over. The Minish, close to the Gods, knew how to control it. They freed me and decided to take over. Their numbers have grown. There is no hope for you now!”

Throughout Vaati’s speech, the energy field that was the Triforce crackled, lighting up like a thunderstorm. Clouds began to gather, rain started to fall, and a gale blew.

Link charged. A slash from the Master Sword flew toward Vaati, blade flashing through the air. The sword flew harmlessly through him and whipped back. Link was nearly decapitated. A blast of air swept Link upward, rising, rising, rising…

The stone roof shattered like glass as Link kept going further up. Zelda screamed as Link showed no signs of slowing down. Vaati showed no emotion as Link hit the top of the barrier. The sudden stop knocked him unconscious.

He fell, faster than when he went up. Stopping mid-air, Link was encased in a smaller version of the barrier. A strange light illuminated the castle, blinding everyone. Vaati disappeared, leaving the leaders dazed and confused.

Meanwhile, Link was slowly waking up. An odd feeling came over him as he looked down. His senses told him that he was high in the air, however he saw only solid ground. He remembered little about what had just happened. Vaati hadn’t been hurt by the Master Sword… Something wasn’t right.

A familiar blast of air hit him as Vaati appeared. “Link, Link, I believe we have some unfinished business.”

“Vaati,” Link replied, “my ancestor sealed you away in the Four Sword. Somehow you have escaped. It is my duty to seal you away once more!”

“You poor, misguided child. You cannot defeat me. The power of the Gods is with me.”

“No way the Gods support you,” Link said defiantly, “you are lying! You will never be in their favor. The creators will help me destroy you as they have before!”

“Child, you don’t know what power I have now. Aren’t you curious? The Master Sword couldn’t hurt me!”

Vaati began to change. He quickly appeared as a Hylian with dull, purple hair, a cape, and a turban. Walking up to Link, he pulled up his left hand.

“It couldn’t be,” Link gasped, “it couldn’t be!”

Vaati smiled with satisfaction. On the back of his hand, a lone symbol appeared. On the back of his hand, the one thing that could make Link lose hope appeared. On the back of his hand, the completed Triforce appeared.
