There was quite a bit of time skipped between Ocarina of Time and The Wind Waker. Just what happened in that time? Aside from The Wind Waker’s illustrated introduction, we know little about what actually happened in between the two games.

ZeldaInformer’s Casey Hodges has written a speculative article discussing just what might have happened during that time period; check out the article here.

I was contacted by Joe Rovang, a Zelda fan who – surprisingly – had only recently picked up The Wind Waker. To help himself remember where certain objects and places were within the expanse of the Great Sea, he had created an incredible high-resolution map. When I saw it, I knew precisely what had to be done.

Zelda Universe’s Wind Waker maps have long been in need of a touch-up, and I’m happy to say that Joe’s map is exactly what ZU’s Wind Waker section needed. Please have a look at the map, which I’ve dubbed the Ultimate Sea Chart, by clicking here. And thanks, Joe, for making it!

Introduction

Restless souls wander where they don’t belong…
—Ocarina of Time

As Link roams across the mysterious Koholint Island, a ghost begins to follow behind him. It whispers, “…The house… …take me… …the house… …at the bay…” Link brings the ghost to its former home. The floors are cracked, the lights have dimmed. The spirit sadly drifts across the room. “…Nostalgia… …unchanged… …boo hoo…”

“…Enough… …cemetery… …take me… …my grave…”

Ghost

There is a common theme that runs through Link’s Awakening and Ocarina of Time. It is expressed more fully in Majora’s Mask, and summarized at the end of The Wind Waker. These four stories express what it means to live bound to the flow of time. They are stories about the beauty of mortality, the journey from childhood to adulthood and from life to death. They are about growing up and leaving behind the immortal playground of childhood, letting go of the familiar to venture out into the world that lies beyond.
