The Nintendo Wii is on it’s way to replacing the PlayStation 2 as the most successful console of all time ever, according to analyst firm Venture Beat. The console is predicted to have sold 154 million Wii’s globally by 2014, says Digital Spy, that would put it ahead of the 140 million units the PlayStation 2 has managed.

According to Venture Beat the Wii is 10 percent ahead of the PS2 in comparative life-time terms, having sold 17.5 million units during the first 26 months on sale in the US, compared to 15.9 million units for Sony’s console.

More good news from Nintendo.

First revealed in October of last year, the DSi features a camera and built-in memory. It’s first debut was in Japan late last year, and it revived the sales of Nintendo’s handheld, that had been losing to Sony’s PSP handheld.

So if you’re wanting to get the DSi, it just might be available in April.

In an effort to boost music among children, Nintendo is partnering with The National Association for Music Education to bring Wii Music to classrooms across America.

546472Yes, it is true. Nintendo is actually partnering with TNAME to get kids more interested in learning about music. They will be bringing Wii Music into 51 cities, their intent is not to teach kids exactly how to play music, but to get them interested and engaging them with some key educational concepts.

There hasn’t been much of news lately, and we here at ZU apologize for the lack of news being put onto the site, but as you know Christmas is coming up, and everybody deserves a break, even us news monkeys.

For the moment I did receive something interesting from forum member Artorium. G4 is a television network, that is best known for its gaming coverage. Well a couple days ago they had an interview with Reggie. He talked about sales, the people who want Wii , mature titles, and how (again Nintendo trying to  reassure us) Nintendo has not forgotten about the core Nintendo fan.

Nintendo’s DSi sells half a million units in a single month.

Retrospective Remembrance: The Ocarina of Time

10th Anniversary Special Extravaganza
By Power Shot

Link decides to reveal a surprising retro look for the decade celebration.

Link decides to reveal a surprising retro look for the decade celebration.

So I’ve been asked to do this now. I’ll be writing this in a completely different format from my usual reviews, partially because of the significance of the game I’m being asked to review, and partially because I only have two days to get this out. In case you couldn’t tell, November 21st is the tenth anniversary of the release of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Regarded as one of the finest games ever designed, it has sold 7.6 million copies of its original N64 release, and has spawned almost half a dozen re-releases. It was also the first game to ever receive a perfect score from Famitsu, which in itself is regarded as the most respected video game reviewing magazine available. Yes, even I liked this game as a child, and I still do as an adult, so it’s incredibly difficult for me to say anything negative about this game. So, instead of all of that, we’re going to take a look at this juggernaut of gaming and see exactly what made it tick back then, what makes us remember it now, and how it came to be classified as one of the greatest, if not the greatest games ever made.

Incidentally, this remembrance will contain more spoilers than a review of the new Saw film. But if you’re wary of spoilers of this game, then you clearly have no idea what I’m talking about, so give this review to someone who does.

Out of the gate, Wii Music, hasn’t been so hot. 66,000 thousand copies have been sold thus far. When compared to the sales of other casual success story games, such as Wii Fit (I know that most of you readers are gamers, but you can’t deny the fact that it is selling well) has sold 487,000 copies.

One would think Nintendo may be worried (or you gamers pray for it because maybe they will step away from this casual persona), but you would be incorrect. Hit the jump to find out why.

The following are various sales data for The Legend of Zelda franchise.  Every effort was made to consult NPD, Media Crate and Chart Track, as well as Nintendo’s own financial reports.  Some interviews were also also utilized.  However, some portions of the data are based on incomplete reports and speculation – which is clearly noted in a section below.  The report is in two parts – publicly official data, and data based on official sources and speculation based on the best possible information available at the time.

With sales of Nintendo DS’s falling in Japan, new rumors are surfacing about a potential new system that may replace the DS as a true successor that could be released at the end of the year for Japan. Right now, even though the DS is booming in other territories, it’s falling in Japan, which could lead to an early launch of this new system to increase profits for Nintendo.

However, these falling sales figures might be less about the DS’s popularity and more about running out of people to sell them to.

An article on the subject can be found here.
