There was quite a bit of time skipped between Ocarina of Time and The Wind Waker. Just what happened in that time? Aside from The Wind Waker’s illustrated introduction, we know little about what actually happened in between the two games.

ZeldaInformer’s Casey Hodges has written a speculative article discussing just what might have happened during that time period; check out the article here.

There are many ways to challenge yourself in a Zelda game – the three hearts challenge, always wearing iron boots, using the worst swords, and so on, and I’m sure we’ve all tried at least one of them, done it, and considered ourselves masters of Zelda.

But those are just minor challenges, not even worthy of consideration next to the big one: completing a Zelda blindfolded. Or, in this case, just blind. Which is why I was utterly astounded to find out about Jordan, born blind, and yet still managing to complete Ocarina of Time.

bank-o-hyrule

It’s time! For those who didn’t read the post directly below this one, we’re celebrating the launch of The Bank of Hyrule with – what else – a contest! We’re giving away two prizes: Four volumes of VizKid’s The Legend of Zelda manga, and an X-Rocker II gaming chair (with speakers built-in!).

To enter, all you need to do is the following:

  1. Be living in the US or Canada. Sorry, we didn’t make the shipping restrictions!
  2. Take a photo of something in real life you feel represents or reminds you of Zelda. It could be anything – we’re not being strict here – but don’t push it too much.
  3. Upload that photo somewhere – to Flickr, ImageShack, we don’t care where.
  4. Post a link to the photo in the comments of this post, and we’ll tally ‘em up for a raffle.

The contest will run from now until 11:59pm this coming Sunday, July 12. Please use this post’s comments for entries only – anything that isn’t an entry will be deleted. Make sure to submit your entry in the comments system before 11:59pm on the 12th if you want a shot at winning anything. The winners will be selected by raffle out of the comments, so everyone has an equal shot at the prizes no matter what your photographic skill is.

For more details on the prizes, some elaboration on the rules, and to enter, read on!

LegendofZelda1_500

Ahh, fresh manga.

It seems Viz decided to answer my call from before, and it wasn’t long before the recently released Ocarina of Time manga appeared at my doorstep to review. Previously, these volumes were only available in Japanese, or “scanlated” by diehard fans, but were finally brought to the US near the end of 2008. As someone who heavily reads manga, I’ve always been skeptical about a manga series based off of a video game series, especially one as renowned as The Legend of Zelda. My perception of such things has always been skewed; they’ll either be really great, or terribly abysmal. My greatest fear was that the Ocarina of Time manga might cross the border into fan fiction territory – and did I really want to see that?

Yet, knowing this, I opened the books and read them entirely. Did the artists and story-makers who created this properly give homage to Ocarina of Time, or is this manga just another steaming pile of ink?

You may have heard the reports on a rumored Ocarina of Time remake for Wii. Yesterday the site responsible for the news (GameFocus) reported it was an April Fools hoax (surprise, surprise). Click this link for the article.

Obviously, there were many more April Fools hoaxes. Here are some of them.

Today is March 31st, which means tomorrow is April Fool’s day, and so seeing an announcement of a Wii remake of the infamous Ocarina of Time seems like quite the joke. But word on the internet street is that there’s going to be an announcement following this one on the 5th of April. To be honest, I’d find it completely lame for them to only announce it being a joke… but who knows? Just don’t get those hopes up too high.

After what seems like forever, Zelda Universe is proud to present a visual walkthrough for Ocarina of Time. It’s got over fifty parts to it, so if you’re playing Ocarina of Time, for the first time or out of nostalgia, and are completely stuck, there’s a solution waiting for you in the visual walkthrough. The visual walkthrough was graciously donated to ZU by mab24680123456.

In addition, a link to the visual walkthrough has been added to Zelda Universe’s Ocarina of Time section.

Look for a corresponding Master Quest visual walkthrough appearing soon! We’re getting it set up and ready, so just be patient.

It’s no question that ZU’s most popular section is the Ocarina of Time section, a section that, unfortunately, has been bereft of images for a good time. This is all about to change, starting with the Gold Skulltulas page, which now has one hundred screenshots indicating the location of each Skulltula courtesy of forum-goer 0nilink.

In addition to the screenshots, various errors and typos were corrected in the guide, and the formatting was changed to accommodate the images to the standard ZU guide format.

You’ll find images popping up all around the Ocarina of Time section as we move our efforts towards filling up the sections missing images. Staff member Steve has been gathering up as much high-quality Ocarina of Time models rips as possible and already implemented what we’ve gotten so far into the Characters and Enemies pages. Expect these areas to be filled in the coming weeks!

As a quick closing statement, all these efforts are part of a broader movement to build up ZU’s waning Zelda Media Gallery, currently sparsely populated with miscellaneous Zelda imagery. All the higher-quality artwork not displayed on ZU’s main site sections, and higher quality versions of artwork already displayed here, will be shifted to the gallery once we’ve gotten the main site filled up.

I’m happy to announce that our Super Smash Bros. Brawl Characters page has gotten a slight face lift in the form of images with transparent backgrounds. This is the first part of an improvement we’re hoping to bring to the rest of our Zelda sections as well – the highest quality images on the internet. With that said, I have a few announcements about images!

It seems Nintendo Power celebrated Ocarina of Time’s tenth birthday as well by interviewing the man that makes the game tick, Eiji Aonuma.

In this interview Eiji talks about what made OoT the game we all know and love. He answers questions about how the graphical style was selected, why they used the cinematics that they did, why Epona exists, and much more. Anything you could possibly not know about OoT is in this interview, and we have the scans of the whole thing for you to read.

There are many OoT retro reviews and articles that have recently come out. Powershot’s review was utter beauty, and magnificence. Another one caught my eye however, and for all those Zelda junkies out there you may want to read this one found right here on one of our friend sites, VGRC.

The key point of this article is, variety can make or break a game. The author goes on to talk about how the game was fun the whole time, instead of having parts that were fun and others that were painstakingly boring.

Hey, what do I know, go have a read for yourself.

Retrospective Remembrance: The Ocarina of Time

10th Anniversary Special Extravaganza
By Power Shot

Link decides to reveal a surprising retro look for the decade celebration.

Link decides to reveal a surprising retro look for the decade celebration.

So I’ve been asked to do this now. I’ll be writing this in a completely different format from my usual reviews, partially because of the significance of the game I’m being asked to review, and partially because I only have two days to get this out. In case you couldn’t tell, November 21st is the tenth anniversary of the release of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Regarded as one of the finest games ever designed, it has sold 7.6 million copies of its original N64 release, and has spawned almost half a dozen re-releases. It was also the first game to ever receive a perfect score from Famitsu, which in itself is regarded as the most respected video game reviewing magazine available. Yes, even I liked this game as a child, and I still do as an adult, so it’s incredibly difficult for me to say anything negative about this game. So, instead of all of that, we’re going to take a look at this juggernaut of gaming and see exactly what made it tick back then, what makes us remember it now, and how it came to be classified as one of the greatest, if not the greatest games ever made.

Incidentally, this remembrance will contain more spoilers than a review of the new Saw film. But if you’re wary of spoilers of this game, then you clearly have no idea what I’m talking about, so give this review to someone who does.
