As we all know (or at least us Pokemon nerds), today was the release date of Pokemon Platinum, the newest game in the series, which sold over one million copies in its first two days in Japan.

Platinum is the sequel to the recent Diamond and Pearl games. (Which are, of course, slightly different versions of each other). Platinum has two new aspects which may be of interest. One: A new area called Distortion World. And two: (Possibly just rumor) 61 new little beasties added to the Pokedex. (Available to catch).

There is a rumor going around that Nintendo is planning to release the DSi in the month of April of this year.6335853729155051355 The new DSi is estimated to cost around USD 179.99 and apparently will be released in the first half of this year, sometime around April 4 is the rumored date, according to IGN which cities,”multiple sources close to Nintendo”.

First revealed in October of last year, the DSi features a camera and built-in memory. It’s first debut was in Japan late last year, and it revived the sales of Nintendo’s handheld, that had been losing to Sony’s PSP handheld.

So if you’re wanting to get the DSi, it just might be available in April.

With sales of Nintendo DS’s falling in Japan, new rumors are surfacing about a potential new system that may replace the DS as a true successor that could be released at the end of the year for Japan. Right now, even though the DS is booming in other territories, it’s falling in Japan, which could lead to an early launch of this new system to increase profits for Nintendo.

However, these falling sales figures might be less about the DS’s popularity and more about running out of people to sell them to.

An article on the subject can be found here.

It is well-known that Nintendo enjoy making things smaller. When the GBA came out, it was only two years before the SP showed its tinier face to the world, and yet another two before the Micro appeared. Even the DS has had the same trend, with the original being released in 2004 and the Lite in 2006. Now, in 2008, it seems that we might be downsizing yet again to a smaller, more portable system. I guess Nintendo figures that our waistbands are getting tighter, so we can’t jam our bulky portables into our pants like we used to.

The reputable website, Kotaku, has just released information that, according to Hirokazu Hamamura, head of Enterbrain (which, if you don’t know, is the big daddy of Famitsu, one of the best gaming magazines of Japan) we might just be due for another handheld: a DS even “liter” than the current DS Lite. Hamamura stated that Nintendo might be unveiling designs for this alleged new DS at E3, 2008.

Personally, I still have an original DS, and have never really felt the need to downsize, but I guess size does matter to other denizens of Nintendo’s fanboy kingdom. And the rule in the handheld world is the opposite of the automotive industry. Smaller is sometimes better.
