Throughout his journeys around Hyrule, Link has stumbled upon many various types of creatures. Some of these creatures dwell within water.  You’ll find others hidden within vast deserts.  Some can be very hospitable, while others may even try to eat Link.  Here you will find a brief description of all the different races that you can find within Hyrule, Termina, Koholint and every other land you will discover in the many worlds of Zelda.

Location: Isle of Frost, Great Sea; New Hyrule

Found in Game(s): Phantom Hourglass, Spirit Tracks

Famous Race Members: None

Resembling Inuit people, the Anouki reside in very cold places.  They bear horns of various sizes and have been shown to grow large beards.  Their homes resemble igloos, and they tend to live within groups.  They are relatively dim-witted creature compared to other races, however, they manage to give Link incredibly tedious and complicated tasks including pairing anoukis together based upon each others’ likeness of features on other anoukis.

Cobble

Location: Isle of Ruins

Found in Game(s): Phantom Hourglass

Famous Race Members: King Mutoh (picture), Astrid, Kayo, Brant, Bremeur, Doylan, Max, Zauz

The cobble are a very ancient race of people who inhabited the Isle of Ruins, formerly known as the Cobble Kingdom.  This kingdom is hidden beneath the waves of the Great Sea on the Isle of Ruins, where Link will meet many knights and even the king of this once great race.  These people seem to be based upon the Mayan and Aztec civilizations as shown by their architecture and garments.  The cobble people were apparently capable of great feats of structure and engineering, which is shown by their construction of the guardian, Eox, their pyramids, temples and tombs.  Some of these people were gifted with great powers of premonition which are supposedly increased after death.

The Dekus are a race who is mainly concerned about themselves, and therefore they can switch sides between good and evil, depending on which is best for them at the time.

Famous Race Members: Navi, Tatl, Tael, Ciela, Leaf, Neri

Guardian Fairies, or simply fairies, are small glowing ‘flies’ that have been assigned to guard and protect their own Kokiri Kid. The Great Fairy is a big fairy, that seems to be put together by many small Guardian Fairies, or at least she is in Majora’s Mask when Skull Kid shatters her into many small fairys. Special fairies that are only used for healing are called ‘Faeries’. The Fairies are often forgotten when the races of Hyrule are mentioned, even though they play a great part in the journeys of Link.

Garo

Location: Ikana Canyon

Found in Game(s): Majora’s Mask

The Garo were ninja of an enemy nation to the kingdom of Ikana during its living years.  They were sent to spy on the people of Ikana an to learn their ways.  Even now, in death, they continue to spy, yet they remain only as empty shells of what they used to be.  These creatures can only be seen by Link if he dons the Garo’s mask, as they do not reveal themselves to people.  The garo will appear to Link as he travels throughout Ikana Canyon and will mistake him for a fellow garo if he wears their mask.  They will see through Link’s disguise, however, and do battle with Link.  Once Link defeats them, they will reveal secrets about the mysterious land.  The garo will then dispose of their bodies- “to die without leaving a corpse… That is the way of us Garo.” —Garo Ninja.

Goron

Location: Hyrule, Labrynna, Holodrum, Termina, New Hyrule, Great Sea

Found in Game(s): Ocarina of Time, Majora’s Mask, Oracle of Seasons, Oracle of Ages, Twilight Princess, Phantom Hourglass, Spirit Tracks

Famous Race Members: Darunia, Darmani, Darbus, Gor Coron

The Gorons are generally a helpful race that won’t harm anybody that doesn’t want to harm them. However, they do possess great power and knowledge about fighting techniques. This is proven when Link inhabits the body of an ancient Goron Soldier, Darmani, in the adventure of Majora’s Mask. They can live under extreme heat, and grow to become HUGE (Example: Biggoron who lives at the top of Death Mountain). The Gorons eat rocks. It is believed that once Hyrule was flooded the Gorons fled to other parts of the world, such as Labrynna and Termina, as they are not very tolerable to water.

Great Fairy

Location: Everywhere

Found in Game(s): All

Famous Race Members: Queen of Fairies (Picture)

Great fairies are very generous, kind creatures who are always willing to aid Link in his quest.  They have appeared in numerous Zelda titles and are very powerful beings.  They will almost always heal Link if he approaches them (and often fill his magic meter), but great fairies will very often power Link up by granting him powerful spells or by upgrading his items and their carrying capacity.  The fairies often represent the ideals of the three goddesses who created Hyrule- power, wisdom and courage.  Fairies, while powerful, can be be subdued by strong forces which has been demonstrated in Majora’s Mask in which the skull kid broke the five great fairies of Termina into many small, stray fairies.  This was also demonstrated in The Wind Waker in which a great fairy was trapped within a large Octo which Link is able to easily take down, thereby freeing the fairy.

Hylians

Location: Hyrule, Termina

Found in Game(s): All

Famous Race Members: Link, Zelda (Picture)

Blessed by the Gods with exceptional magical skills, such as the ability to communicate through telepathy and making powerful potions, the Hylians have always been the most powerful race throughout Hyrule. They look a lot like humans, except their ears are long and pointy. Hylians were the first to establish any sort of organized civilzation within Hyrule, and they tend to live in largely populated areas such as Hyrule castle markets.  It is believed that Hylians’ large, pointed ears are as such to allow them to hear the voices of the Gods.  The Hylians are known for having the skill of manipulating magic, although the Hylians who dwell in Termina seem to live more by technology rather than magic.

Kokiri

Location: Kokiri Forest in Hyrule

Found in Game(s): Ocarina of Time

Famous Race Members: Saria (Picture), Mido

Living in the Kokiri Forest protected by The Great Deku Tree, the Kokiri were the only race that did not participate in the Great War. An ancient legend tells that if a Kokiri leaves the forest, he or she will die. Every Kokiri is born with a protecting fairy.  These people are said to never grow into adults, and thus, they remain as children for their entire lives.

Korok

Location: Forest Haven on the Great Sea

Found in Game(s): The Wind Waker

Famous Race Members: Makar

The Korok are the Kokiri. Confused? When Hyrule was flooded around a century after Ocarina of Time, the various races then had to adapt to their new every day lives. As a result, the magical children of the Deku Tree took the form as Koroks, simply because this was a more suitable shape for them. One of the reasons was that they could easily fly with the help of the Deku Leaves, and it was also most likely a shape that was more true to their nature, rather than the human-like shape they had as the Kokiri Children.

Lokomo

Location: New Hyrule

Found in Game(s): Spirit Tracks

Famous Race Members: Anjean (picture), Gage, Steem, Carben, Embrose and Rael

The Lokomo are servants of the good spirits that watch over New Hyrule, and are the original inhabitants of the land that Link and Tetra settled down in. The few remaining Lokomo guard the sacred temples that keep the evil Malladus ensnared beneath the Spirit Tracks. They move around via metallic, steam-driven chairs – their legs are rarely ever seen.

Anjean, perhaps the most well-known Lokomo, is the guardian of the Tower of Spirits – the point of convergence for all of the Spirit Tracks. The other Lokomo scattered about New Hyrule guard each of New Hyrule’s five realms from evil power.

Famous Race Members: Ezlo, Vaati

The Minish people are a legendary people who live scattered throughout Hyrule. Some live in villages in the forests, others live right amongst the people of Hyrule, but because of their small size inhabitants of Hyrule aren’t aware of their existence, and they are most often thought to be but a legend. The Minish only show themselves to children, and so adults are inclined to belive them to be only legends.

Location: Hyrule, Koholint Island, Termina, Labrynna

Found in Game(s): A Link to the Past, Link’s Awakening, Majora’s Mask, Oracle of Ages, Twilight Princess

Famous Race Members: Kiki

Monkeys are recurring characters who appear in a number of Zelda titles dating back as early as A Link to the Past. These creatures often resemble chimpanzees or macaques, and have a wide assortment of colors- they appear anywhere from brown to a light shade of purple.  The monkeys, in any given game, more often than not aid Link in his journey (though sometimes for a price) by means of building a bridge, leading him through the lost woods or even swinging him across large gaps that Link would otherwise be unable to cross.  The monkeys often appear to be very intelligent and are sometimes even capable of human speech (demonstrated by the monkey shown in the picture from Majora’s Mask).

Location: Dragon Roost Island on the Great Sea

Found in Game(s): The Wind Waker

Famous Race Members: Quill, Medli, Prince Komali (Picture)

The Ritos worship Valoo, the God of the Sky, and every Rito who wants wings must face Valoo to get them.

They are extremely good swimmers, but they need water to survive. In Ocarina of Time, most of the Zoras died when their home, Zora’s Domain was frozen during Links seven-year sleep. The Zoras have also appeared as an evil race, but then they go by the name “Zola”.

Zuna

Location: Zuna Village – Desert of Doubt

Found in Game(s): Four Swords Adventures

Famous Race Members: None

Very little is known about the Zuna tribe.  They inhabit the Desert of Doubt in the world of Four Swords Adventures.  Apparently these people built the pyramid that housed the trident which eventually brought Ganon to power.  They appear to wear clothing simliar to traditional middle-eastern garb with turbans and robes.  Their village is comprised of huts adorned with large flowers.  They have a surprisingly high number of green and flowering plants despite their location in the middle of an otherwise barren desert.  The Zuna seem to somewhat hospitable characters as they welcome Link into their village very nicely.
