Cuphead developers say making their own Zelda game would be a ‘dream come true’

In case you missed it, Cadence of Hyrule — the new Legend of Zelda game from the makers of Crypt of the Necrodancer — released and fans are loving it. A rogue-like rhythm game remixing some of our favorite Zelda songs, Cadence of Hyrule is a wonderful blend of nostalgia and creativity.

With the Switch eShop release of Cuphead selling like hotcakes on the Switch, it got people thinking about what other indie studios could be brought on board to make a new Zelda game. Well, the developers at Studio MDHR talked about exactly this with Nintendo Force, providing some insight into what kind of Zelda game they would make.

“A sprawling Zelda title brought to life in a doting 2D hand-animated style…” ponders Jared Moldenhauer, Lead Game Designer of Studio MDHR. “Think of all the expressiveness and life you could bring to the tribes, people, and enemies of a universe that rich! And much like Cuphead, we would get to test our design mettle coming up with screen-filling bosses of an entirely different nature. Of course, backgrounds would be completely hand-painted with nothing re-used! The list just goes on and on. It would be an absolute dream come true.”

Before Cadence of Hyrule was announced and released, not a lot of people thought this was something that could be done. But, with its success and both the critic and fan approval of Cuphead, then maybe we can look forward to a hand-animated Zelda title. At the very least, we have reason to hope for new, unique Zelda experiences in the future.

Returning to Cadence of Hyrule, we have more coverage on it and the rest of E3 2019 in case you missed it, and we are currently looking for volunteers to help us work on our guide for the game!
