Volunteer to help Zelda Universe

We are always looking for passionate Zelda fans to join our team
Zelda Universe is operated entirely by a dedicated group of volunteers. Since 2001, hundreds of Zelda fans have dedicated their time to make Zelda Universe what it is today. Today, we have more than one hundred active volunteers working across all aspects of the Zelda community.
Most volunteers, understandably, cannot help forever, so we’re always looking for new fans to join the team.
Expectations
- Zelda Universe is run entirely by volunteers. That means we cannot pay you.
- Most team members are at least 18 years old. We do consider applications from mature teenagers, but we cannot consider anyone under the age of 13.
- You must be willing and able to communicate with the team using our web apps (which are free).
- Zelda Universe is a global organization, but it is an English publication. You must speak and write English fluently.
Benefits
- Gain valuable skills and experience. We can’t train you to do everything, but we can teach you some new skills.
- The work you create can be included on a CV/resume. Team leaders will gladly give a reference to volunteers in good standing. Past volunteers have gone on to work for Nintendo of America, IGN, and in many other industries around the world.
- Experienced team members may be invited to attend conventions (like PAX or E3) as a member of our team.
- Experienced writers may be allowed to write game reviews using advanced copies provided by game developers.
Positions that we are actively recruiting for are listed on this page, but if you are interested in helping with something else, please reach out to us anyway. We’re happy to consider new additions to any teams or to consider brand new projects.

Writing and editing positions
- We use WordPress to manage all of our articles. If you have never used it before, we will teach you.
- Basic image editing capabilities (cropping and resizing) are helpful. We can teach you!
- You must read and adhere to our style guide. We use the AP Style Guide, but some Zelda-specific changes have been adopted.
- Excellent spelling and grammar are required.
News writer
News writers report on Zelda-related news, including fan projects and community events, as well as major Nintendo-related announcements (which includes some non-Zelda topics).
This is a fast-paced position; the news is unpredictable. There may be very little news this week, but next week there could be several breaking news stories that need immediate coverage.
Expectations: 1 article written each week
- A flexible writing schedule is necessary.
Columns writer
Column writers choose from a list of predetermined Zelda themes to write about. Examples of our current themes include music, fan art, and character profiles. Writers sign up for specific days in advance and submit articles beforehand for editing and review. This is a creative writing position.
Expectations: 2 articles written each month
- Must be able to work with a deadline.
Features writer
Features writers select their own Zelda topics to cover with in-depth perception and research. Past topics include timeline theories, exploring the symbolism of the Zelda series, discussions of hot issues like voice acting or a female Link, and many others. This position requires a larger commitment but also gives you more freedom for writers to explore their passions.
We are also looking for features writers who want to help develop list-style articles (e.g. Top 10 favorite Zelda dungeons).
Features writers may also write traditional game reviews from time-to-time, but we limit which games are reviewed.
Expectations: 1 article written each month
- Must have an in-depth knowledge of the Zelda series.
Guides writer
Guides writers focus on how-to articles that explain how to achieve a goal while playing a Zelda game. This includes traditional walkthroughs and smaller articles for specific side quests.
Guides writers need to be flexible. A writer may be required to write about a game that is the most important right now (for example, a new release), but other times may be able to write about whatever Zelda game most interests them.
Expectations: 1 article written each month
- Must be able to play the Zelda games you are writing about. The more games you have access to, the better.
- Requires a stronger understanding of WordPress than other writing positions.

Media positions
Video editor
Video editors combine audio and video clips with other graphics to create completed videos that we publish on YouTube and other social media platforms.
Most video editors will be assigned to work on one of our recurring series, like Zelda News, but we also publish one-off videos that do not follow a set schedule.
Expectations: 1-2 videos edited each month
- Must be able to work with a deadline.
Game recorder
Game recorders use video capture devices to record footage and take screenshots of Zelda gameplay. The footage and screenshots are used primarily in guides and YouTube videos, but it is useful for many types of content.
This can be very time consuming since capturing a specific moment often requires playing through a significant portion of the game.
Expectations: 1-2 requests each month.
- Must have video capture equipment.
- Must be able to play the Zelda games to record them. The more games you have access to, the better.
Twitch broadcaster
Twitch broadcaster host weekly shows on our Twitch channel.
We do not often add new broadcasters, but we are always interested in exploring unique ideas for new shows with experienced broadcasters. All of our shows have themes, and we don’t always play video games!
Expectations: Stream for at least 1 hour each week
- Must have prior experience streaming.
- Must be familiar with OBS Studio.
Twitch scheduler
Twitch schedulers coordinate with our talent to find out when they are streaming, what they are streaming, and keep the Twitch channel schedule updated with that information at all times.
Expectations: Maintain Twitch schedule on platform
- Must have great communication skills.
- Must know their way around a Twitch dashboard.
Twitch announcement coordinator
Twitch announcement coordinators coordinate with ZU team leaders to find out what recent events from Zelda Universe or the Zelda community merit announcing on Twitch streams, and then maintaining a reference document with a list of current announcements for Twitch streamers to announce at any given time.
Expectations: Maintain Twitch announcements
- Must have great communication skills.
- Must be a proven organizer with outlines/documents.
Twitch promoter
Twitch promoters work with both Twitch schedulers and the social media team to promote streams on social media shortly before they go live. This also includes communicating with talent to get photos and content information on a regular basis.
Expectations: Promoting Twitch streams each time they happen
- Must have great communication skills.
- Must know their way around TweetDeck and/or Feed Hive.
