Nintendo has announced the Motion Plus, an attachment for our beloved Wiimote that extends its motion sensing capabilities. 1:1 motion sensing is the benefit here – something that the Wii has lacked since its launch. Such a lack has made games that rely heavily on movement in 3D space annoying; the Motion Plus should fix all of that.
While more will be unveiled at Nintendo’s press conference tomorrow morning, I have a slight feeling that the Motion Plus will eventually be integrated into all future Wiimotes. That’s just me starting rumors, though.
UPDATE: One member has asked if the peripheral will stop consumers from connecting a Nunchuk to the Wiimote. The answer is no – look closely at the hi-res photo, and you’ll see that there is a plug on the bottom of the Motion Plus, essentially the same plug on the bottom of the Wii Remote. It’s got a cover on it, meaning that Nintendo will ship these babies with a rubber or plastic plug cover. That only adds to the suspicion that all newer Wii remotes post-E3 will be produced with the Motion Plus in-house.
NINTENDO INTRODUCES THE WII™ MOTIONPLUS
July 14, 2008
Nintendo’s upcoming Wii™ MotionPlus accessory for the revolutionary Wii Remote™ controller again redefines game control, by more quickly and accurately reflecting motions in a 3-D space. The Wii MotionPlus accessory attaches to the end of the Wii Remote and, combined with the accelerometer and the sensor bar, allows for more comprehensive tracking of a player’s arm position and orientation, providing players with an unmatched level of precision and immersion. Every slight movement players make with their wrist or arm is rendered identically in real time on the screen, providing a true 1:1 response in their game play. The Wii MotionPlus accessory reconfirms Nintendo’s commitment to making games intuitive and accessible for everyone. Nintendo will reveal more details about the Wii MotionPlus accessory and other topics Tuesday morning at its E3 media briefing.

One of the biggest complaints about TP was that the controls were “tacked on” and the movements of the wii remote didn’t accurately reflect the movements of Link’s sword. If there is going to be a LoZ announcement tomorrow, this would go hand in hand with it.

I read about this on the forums. This is awesome and it is going to make Zelda Wii much more kick ass.

I agree, the new Zelda should make good use of this Motion Plus.

Hey jason, is this going to affect using the nunchuck in any way? I can’t see another outlet on the motion plus thing so how are we going to use the nunchuck?

No, it will not. There is a spot under the Motion Plus peripheral that allows the Nunchuk to be plugged in.

If there is a Wiimote 2.0, i’m hoping it will have a better quality speaker and more memory for actually storing data instead of just miis. (How many people even remember that the wiimote can store Miis?)

You know when I first heard about the Wii remote I thought it would be like how the Motionplus would be. But it wasn’t… it was incapable of 1:1 stuff. Luckily, the next Zelda will have this.

I would love to write and say what a great job you did on this, as you have put a lot of work into it.
