ZU Meet-up Extravaganza: Let's get this thing going!

So, long story short, a while ago Asia had proposed we have a world wide meet-up. The plan was to pick a date during the summer (June-August) and have several meet-ups in different countries across the world, all on the same day.

Here's the old thread: http://www.zeldauniverse.net/forums/...s-one-day.html
(Don't revive that, it's dead.)

And here's a map. Add yourself, please: http://www.frappr.com/?a=constellati...d=137440695348

So, there was obviously enough interest. But then Asia disappeared from the forums, and the idea died down. But now we're getting closer to the summer, so I say we should actually plan this out, and get it going!

So, list of things to do:
1. Pick a date that people all over the world will agree with.
2. Figure out who could actually go.
3. Decide on locations.
4. Pick people to lead and organize each individual meet-up.
5. Make sure at least one person at each meet-up will have a laptop, and a webcam. This way we can talk to people at the other locations.

The general locations of where the meet-ups will probably be:

East Coast of US (To be narrowed down.)
Location:
Leader: Dog Dog 123 (until someone else wants it)
Thread:

West Coast of US (This will probably be narrowed down)
Location:
Leader: Kasuto
Thread:

Australia
Location:
Leader:
Thread:

UK
Location:
Leader:
Thread: http://www.zeldauniverse.net/forums/...always-do.html

Main-land Europe (probably)
Location:
Leader:
Thread:

Canada
Location: Toronto
Leader: Duo
Thread: http://www.zeldauniverse.net/forums/...e-toronto.html

So, let's actually get this planned. The first thing to do, I suppose, it to pick people to lead the planning of each individual meet-up. And someone who's organized enough to run the whole meet-up, and make sure they're all running well.

I forgot about this! (Thanks, DD!)

Well, I'd like to point out that the SoCal Meetup is planned for the 15th of June this year. It's already underway, so take that into consideration. =)

I'd love to participate, but I won't have enough money to go anywhere beyond my city. (Which is unfortunately not the same city as where the most community-active ZUsers live)

I currently know of only one other ZUser who lives in Melbourne (HitokiriChibi), so finding out about more would be helpful. This may result in there being a second Aussie meet-up location.

I don't suppose you'd like to take over running/organizing it?

Well, I don't know about the rest of the world, but I have school that day. And it's finals. So, I suppose we'll see. Cause if other places go by the same schedule, I dunno.

Would it be smarter to try to bend schedules to fit a predetermined date, or should we go with what's most agreeable for everyone?

Wow, we need to break this up into smaller threads. Or just find more Aussies in this one.

(Seriously, does someone else wanna take charge or organizing this?)

If you need a hand, I'd be happy to help out. =) (Or take over if you need me to, but only if you need it!)

Me neither! I don't know if the SoCal meetup will conflict or be a part of it, but rumour has it we might have a member or two visiting from another place, so that might make it easier to have a second one for this. =)

Maybe it'd be easier to have a bunch of organized meetups in one timeframe?

That's what this board is for! We can have [Extravaganza] -region goes here- threads started by the leader for each territory. =)

Oh sweet. Maybe we can make the SoCal meetup separate and have a second one for Westerners in the Extravaganza. That way, Zach, you can make it to the Extravaganza meetup, even if you can't make it to the SoCal meet up.

That would work beautifully. =)

That would be fun. The only concern there is that if people are traveling at all to get to the meet-up, it would be mean to make them fly there twice in such a short time.

Quote:

A big theme from the Idea Thread was to have them all on the same day. Then connect the various places through a video chat of some sort. It sounded like a really cool thing to do. I dunno. It would be fun to stick to that if we could I think, but if we can't then we can't.

Quote:

Question of the day: How many characters of a thread title are shown on the forum index before it cuts off? Because it all the threads start with [ZU Meet-Up Extravaganza], and then cut off, we can't tell the threads apart when scrolling down the board.

Anyways, of course we're going to split it up. The first step is to figure out who's leading what.

(And for that stage of planning, I think I'll just hide under my desk and watch.)

EDIT: On the topic of dates, we're look at June 19/20? Hmm. Out of those two, the 20th is definitely better. It's a Saturday. So anyone who's school is still going should be off for the weekend. Which, in my mind, seems like a better thing to do then putting it on a Friday.

But no dates are final yet. We have... 5 people who know this thread exists?

EDIT 2: Hmm... I'm bored. Time to be annoying and PM everyone from the idea thread about this.

I've been the main organizer of the Toronto meetup since Asia proposed the original idea. And yes, there are definitely enough people to make it work.

As for suggestions: Dunno how well the webcam thing will work. We will all be in different time zones, so many of the meetups won't be able to correspond with each other. And have x amount of people all talking over webcam at once will be extremely hectic. Not to mention that lugging a laptop around for an entire meetup can't be the most fun thing in the world.

And July/August please. No June.

I'm from Melbourne, Sabbo. So a second Australian meet-up location would be handy.

Oh good, because having to fly up to Brisbane (where - in order of modliness - Pani, Bex & Cambria are) is out of my budget. Do you know of any other Melbournians?

Don't forget about the mid-west USA! Chicago is defiantly the place for a mid-west meet up. I'm sure I'd be able to make it now that I'm old enough. About hosting it, I'm not sure. I could "lead" it, but giving people a place to sleep is out of the question...

Hopefully Asci can do something like last time.

I'm going to have to drop out. I just got engaged and I haven't got any money, so I can't really afford to be globetrotting any time soon. Sorry.

Where would the SoCal meetup take place, exactly?

Alrighty, first post is updated.

WHere's mid-west? Oh, you mentioned Asci. I'll just use his dot on the map. Uh, as far as I know, the Eastern US meet-up was headed somewhere west of DC, probably West Virginia or something. That's not too ridiculously far away from his spot.

Quote:

What counts as central US?

Also, we need more of an opinion on this. Is it better to have the meet-ups be big and full of fun people, or smaller and more local with only three or four people?
