Re: Name meanings...

Hey, this topic is too interesting to die yet.

Race names:

Subrosians, comes from the expression "sub rosa", which means under a rose, which has the meaning of hidden/secret.

Twili comes from Twilight. (duh)

Minish and Picori both include the fact that they are small (I think picori could link to the italian piccolo which means little flute)

I believe piccolo actually just means 'small' or something similar (someone correct me if I'm wrong).
A 'piccolo flute' is commonly called just a 'piccolo', but you can actually get all kinds of piccolo instruments.
Well spotted with 'Picori' though, I didn't notice that one.

It could be a reference to cielo-sky or simply a bad romantization of sierra.

Re: Name meanings...

"Baito" is Japanese and means "part-time-job"... It's derived from the german word "Arbeit"("Arubaito"), which means "work".

Re: Name meanings...

Tokay is a type of gecko.
Daphne, maybe the king's namesake, was a nymph from greek nymphs.
Cucco was an ancient bird
Cubus is a shortened word for a type of female demon.

Re: Name meanings...

'Navi'...
Navi-gate...
Navigate!

Navi helps you Navi-gate through the game!

---

'Oni Link' I've heard somewhere on the forum. 'Oni' is Japanese for 'It' in a game of 'tag'. When you fight Majora and get the FD Mask, he tells you that you're the bad guy. You're "it" and you need to catch Majora - it works with all the playful childrens' game imagery (see my theory in my sig!).

---

The provinces of Eldin, Lanayru and Faron (with their corresponding light spirits) seem to be named after the goddesses, Din, Nayru and Farore.

---

'Bongo Bongo' - well this one's pretty self-explanitory.

---

'Mido' - named after the greedy king Midos from... I think it's the Bible? He seems greedy for the love of Saria and the Great Deku Tree... and he seems to think he's the king of the Kokiris.

---

That's all I got so far, I think.

True

'Oni Link' I've heard somewhere on the forum. 'Oni' is Japanese for 'It' in a game of 'tig' (or 'tag' as you Americanos say). Actually his Japanese name is Onikami Rinku: Demon God Link

The provinces of Eldin, Lanayru and Faron (with their corresponding light spirits) seem to be named after the goddesses, Din, Nayru and Farore.

---True Ordon is also named after Farore

'Bongo Bongo' - well this one's pretty self-explanitory.

---Yes it is obvious.

'Mido' - named after the greedy king Midos from... I think it's the Bible? He seems greedy for the love of Saria and the Great Deku Tree... and he seems to think he's the king of the Kokiris.

---Nope the Kokiri are anmed after solfege. Mido is MiDo

That's all I got so far, I think.

It's actualy a double entendre. The "it" meaning is made a pun on the tag thing, but more importantly is that Oni are a type of Japanese demon siad to have great power for destruction. This is kind of mirroed in it's english name, fierce Diety (A diety, possibly demon, who is fierce, implying destrcution).

Re: Name meanings...

I remembered another one, "Rito" is an acronym of "Tori" the japanese word for bird.
There are more of those name meanings then I thought.

Errr... King Midas isn't from the bible.
He's from greek mythology.
He judged a music contest between the annoying baby goat god, Pan and the proud god of the sun, Apollo.
He picked Apollo as the best musician.
Pan got man and gave him goat ears.
He felt so bad about it.
One day he met a half-goat man, a satyr. Meeting another man with donkey ears, he rejoiced, and was happy.
Meanwhile, the satyr's father, the god Dionysus, was happy to see his grumpy son being joyus again, gave Midas one wish.
Midas (Who was very drunk) asked for the golden touch.
Everything he touched turned to gold.
It ruined his life, though.
He hugged his daughter and killed her, tried to eat food, but only bit into gold,
and even almost tried to drink the precious metal!
***
I don't remember how he lost the touch, though.

Not mah fault!

I bet half of the stuff in this thread is made up. I'll make something up just for the fun of it...

"Onox" came from "onyx," a kind of stone.

If you're just betting on it, why not go look it up and find out for sure?
