Re: How does link get out of his marriage

Uhm... because Link sleeps for seven years, then goes back in time. There's simply no time for Ruto to even begin pushing hom for marriage.

EDIT: I also agree with gliderpilotgirl's Child Timeline solucion below.

Re: How does link get out of his marriage

Adult OoT: He doesn't have to. She released him from the promise when she realized a) she's the Sage of Water and has to stay and guard the Temple. and b) He was looking for Princess Zelda and had to save Hyrule.

Child OoT: Now I suppose it wasn't made clear as to WHEN Link was sent back, if it was after he met her than I suppose the promise stands. But if it was before ( As Zelda does not seem to remember him and she still has the Ocarina in her possession ) than it never happened. If it did happen, I suppose he could return the stone and tell her it's a no go.

Re: How does link get out of his marriage

I agree with Gliderpilotgirl's first reason but not the second. Ruto said that the stone was for marriage proposal and was to take like a rings place but she doesn't say anything really to him about it. She just kinda giggles...she knows that there not going to get married but just jokes with him.

Re: How does link get out of his marriage

Well, the Adult timeline has already been solved, so I'll focus on the Child timeline.

The first thing to consider is when exactly Link went back in time. I don't think that it's possible for him to have gone back before his quest began because:

a) his exploits would not have gone down in legend
b) he wouldn't have had Epona in MM
c) he wouldn't have been able to get back out!

So I think it would have had to have been after he touched the Master Sword. Now, I know that you said not to mention Termina (at least I think tat's what you said!), but it really is one of theo nly logical explanations. He might have managed to weasel his way out of it somehow beforehand, but by the sounds of it he went away rather quietly, and so probably wouldn't have caused very much of a fuss. Something tells me that telling Ruto that he wasn't going to marry herwould cause a pretty big fuss.

That's the only reason I can think of for now anyways, so yeah.

Re: How does link get out of his marriage

After Analysis, the earliest time Link may have been sent back to at the end of OOT would be a short time after Link and Zelda first meet and learns Zelda's Lullaby.Link must have also met Saria and learned Saria's Song and taught it to the Skull Kid in the Lost Woods.
Hence, it is possible that in the child time line, Link never met Ruto under such circumstances as in the Adult timeline as he would no longer have the need to collect Ruto's Spiritual Stone.

If I was link, I'd just stay away, far far away.

But really, I think he's sent back before the promise.

Re: How does link get out of his marriage

There are other threads. I haven't looked at them in a while but if you feel like reading them in the future, they discuss the ending of ocarina of time:

[Discussion] The Ending of Ocarina of Time

When is link sent back?

Date of Birth?

There is always a possibility that he was sent back before his quest began. There are reasons for both sides (before or after the quest)

a) If you mean child timeline people won't know Link and his quest, I think the fact that he went through everything means he automatically will go down in legend. Kaebora Gaebora or the goddesses, anyone spiritual up there will know this even in the child timeline. Link's Triforce of Courage mark appears on his child hand in the end of Oot. Zelda will believe him.

b) Link can just as easily visit Lon Lon Ranch for his "first time" and use Epona's Song to call/ride Epona. I think he still remembers some of the Oot Child/Adult songs, but even if he doesn't, Malon can teach it to him anyway.

c) I don't know exactly what you mean. Are you talking about the Door of Time being closed? If so, then the mechanics can be that they will remain open only for Link for this one time. His last travel to the past is special, Zelda sends him back. So this can be why you see the Door of Time opened at the last cutscenes.

See, there are so many different times when Link can be sent back before he pulled the Master Sword. So I am not disagreeing with you there. The only problem is: Saria teaches Skull Kid her song, not Link. MM quote: "you have the same smell as that fairy kid who taught me that song in the forest." Also, in Oot, he says: "do you know Saria's Song? We should be friends!" Link only plays Saria's song to him.

The main reasons why he can't be sent back after lifting the Master Sword:

This implies Zelda and Impa are already gone, they went into hiding after Ganondorf stormed the castle. Ganondorf would already have the Triforce. Why would Zelda be standing in her original place in the Courtyard at the end of the game?

Re: How does link get out of his marriage

You know mate, you make alot of sense.
Its only from your post did I remember the Skull kid talking to link about knowing Saria's Song and asking to be friends.
So this now proves even further that Link could have indeed have been sent back to an even earlier time.

Re: How does link get out of his marriage

I don't want to think about all the many possible points in time Link was returned to. But if I had to choose, my actual pick would be some time before meeting Zelda, just based on her reaction at the end of the game, turning around putting her hand over her mouth. It is similiar to her first reaction when Link first met her, but that is all. Even that can be argued.
