Malon and Marin, not really connected

Here is another reason that Malon and Marin are not really connected. Malon(pronounced either MAH-lon or meh-LON) possibly comes from the root maeil such as in the name Malone, which means saint. Marin most definitely is related the the french word for sailor - also marin(you know, like marine). just another piece to the puzzle. also, may I state that similar hair doesn't mean much.

No, they aren't related in the least. But they are characters based on each other. Character personality similarity is one of the defining traits of the series.

Um . . yeah. I would like to to clear that statement up for the ones who are not in the know.

What Pinecove is saying here is that Marin and Malon are spelled exactly the same in Japanese, along with Tarin and Talon. Romanization (the process of transliterating names written in the Japanese alphabets to the Roman alphabet) is often tricky and is not always perfect. Another example of something like this happening in Zelda is the Zola/Zora confusion.

Hope that elucidated his minimalist post! ^__^;

But even so it would be Taron and Maron, not Malon and Talon, so the names aren't exactly the same.

Re: Malon and Marin, not really connected

But, R and L are in the same characters in Japanese. Why do you think I brought up the Zora/Zola confusion? The original game called them Zola, while later games chose to transliterate this as Zora. The same thing happened with Marin and Malon.

Re: Malon and Marin, not really connected

Actual Creator Quote to show connection:

Toru Osawa (Script Director) on Ocarina of Time: "Tarin and Marin, a father and girl who appeared in "Link's Awakening" (GB) were used as the base for a different parent and child who comes out in this game [OoT]. These are the things that when they are seen by a person who has played Zelda before they will understand. If people begin to think "Do you think that this could be that thing from then?" then I will be happy."

So it's clear that, if nothing else, Malon and Talon were inspired by LA Marin and Tarin.

Re: Malon and Marin, not really connected

I don't think that Marin would have a different japanese name because marin means sailor, and I am sure this is no coincidence. but the two characters still may be connected, and I am thankful that it is not Maron, can you imagine: ron-ron ranch? lol

The Japenease pronounce L's as R's so They mean to say Malon even though they say Maron.

Nope.

If they try to say Maron it'll end up like Maron. If they say Malon it ends up like Maron. They can't pronouns Ls. Period.
