Kaepora Gaebora and Merman
This might be trivial, but I have been thinking lately about the transformation of Hyrule after the Great Flood, including but not limited to, Zora -> Rito, Kokiri -> Korok, etc. Now my thought is that maybe Kaepora Gaebora (the owl guy that gave you advice and such in several of the games) was transformed into Merman (the fish guy that you feed bait in order to get advice on where in the Great Sea you are). However, the only thing I am unsure of is why KG transformed. I have two ideas. One, KG is magical, so he turned himself into a fish so that it would be easier to be anywhere in Hyrule than it would be flying. Two, pitch Merman's quote about fulfilling his debt, ie somebody else turned KG into a fish because he did something they didn't like.
What do you think?

Re: Kaepora Gaebora and Merman
uhhh... no... KG and merman have 2 very different personalities. just looking at their differences makes it obvious that they aren't related.
KG isn't a species. just a single being. he couldn't have evolved, and even if he could, there wouldn't have been a point (why would a bird need to evolve) KG is probably dead by the time WW comes around. it's possible that KG got reincarnated into the merman, but he couldn't have evolved. |

Re: Kaepora Gaebora and Merman
Yes but KG is one... And there are a lot of Merman's so... And besides, one of the Gossip Stones in the Sacred Forest (The near the entrance of the maze when you're jumping on the walls to avoid those moblins) tells you that KG is a reincarnation of an ancient sage. There are also many speculations that he is the physical form of Rauru in the "real" world. One of the gossip stones also says that KG looks "heavy and rigid but is very light-hearted" (rough quote).

Re: Kaepora Gaebora and Merman
Um, guys. First of all, his name is Fishman, not Merman. Does he look like a friggin merman to you? No. He's a fish. Hence, Fishman.
Second, I don't think Kaepora Gaebora became Fishman. Besides, Fishman has a lot of other buddies across the sea, and it's impossible for just an owl to become all of them.

He promised the King of Red Lions that he'll tell his buddies across the sea to help Link out when he gives them food.

Re: Kaepora Gaebora and Merman
KG is alive and well in FSA. He is also a reincarnation of an ancient sage, so he is probably either immortal or is able reincarnate at will. It's also possible that the goddesess appointed him to watch over Hyrule's Heroes and give them guidiance, which would explain his reappearances.

Sun Guardian - I have heard the "Fishman" named both that and "Merman", so I think it is unclear what he is called. If memory serves i believe I heard the name Merman first. Is there an official quote as to what his name is? |

Re: Kaepora Gaebora and Merman
Darknut King: Really? When I first found out his name, I learned it was Fishman. ZU thinks it is because that's what the site names him in TWW's character list. So, I heard Fishman first, and this is the first time I'm hearing "Merman." Besides, doesn't Fishman make more sense? He is a fish after all and not a merman.

Re: Kaepora Gaebora and Merman
Merman is a more accurate translation, I believe.
That aside, there are supposedly multiple Fishmen, and I don't see any similarities in speech or personality between Fishman and KG anyway (although, if he really is a major character in another guise, this would be a crafty disguise). I'm personally interested in this "debt" he speaks of. Supposedly the Great Sea "yields no fish to catch", yet the Fishmen are fish, and obviously on the Great Sea. Maybe they were cursed to be the only fish on the sea? Who knows?

Re: Kaepora Gaebora and Merman
Dudes! The fishmen are gorons!! Duh...
Sarcasim aside, Kaepora Gaebora is one, whereas the fishmen are many. Otherwise, why else would the KoRL say "seek help from those who live in the seas nearby" when telling you how to find the items that will gain you enterance to the earth and wind temples? |

Re: Kaepora Gaebora and Merman
He was just kidding around.
Anyways, in a lot of Zelda games there are mentor figures that guide you throughout the game. It's unrealistic to say that each one is made of the same person, since the mentor figures are really there as a game aspect and not a plot aspect.
