Aunuma's quote on TMC being first.

I don't know i this had been considered before...
But when Aonuma said TMC was the oldest tale, was he referring to the oldest in the Four Sword series or the oldest in the whole Zelda Timeline. I believe he meant the oldest in the Four Swords storyline, what are your opinions on the matter?
And could someone please provide the interview?

Many have given evidence that it can work either way. I don't believe TMC could have come first overall simply because it released 7 years after OoT. When OoT was released they said it was first and I don't believe they would reverse that 7 years afterwrds. Aonuma has said LOTS about the timeline and I'm through taking him OR Miyamoto seriously. I take my own evidence and form a timeline that seems most correct.

To answer your question more simply. He could have meant the oldest in the whole timeline but I bet it is oldest out of just the four sword games.

Certainly, if he meant for it to be any oldest story, it was the oldest tale of the Four Sword saga. However, I've also heard that the words they used could be translated to mean something along the lines of "most recent," so he'd be saying that it's the most recent addition to the Zelda franchise, or perhaps the newest game for theorists to put into timelines.

Huh? Aonuma never said anything of the sort, he said "The GBA Four Swords Zelda is what we’re thinking as the 'oldest tale' in the Zelda timeline". The comment was nade before either FSA or TMC was released, and, as such, probably had little meaning in regards to the FS trilogy.

The translation "most recent" makes no sence in the context of the question (which was specifically about storyline). But then, the answer makes no sence in the context of Aonuma's experience.

Actually, cupac82, it was six years for everyone excpet the Americans between OoT and TMC (1998-2004).

But no, I still reckon OoT is the first one. Miyamoto could have changed his mind about a throwaway statement like that, but it was pretty set in stone that OoT was first.

We'll have to wait for PH to find out. If PH doesn't have FS plot in it I belive the timeline to go like this (which I belive right now)

OoT/MM-TP-TMC-FS/FSA-ALttP/LA-OoS/OoA-LoZ/AoL

I must have been the one that told u that. But yeah I heard that in japanese oldest can mean latest in english, refering the TMC as the newest game to date.

I think that he could have meant "the oldest tale" as in the oldest tale to the citizens of New Hyrule, post flood after the legend of the Hero of Time faded away.

It's not that much of a stretch, considering the vast amount of confusion that translations of developer quotes have caused over the years.
