Hylian Shield = Hylia's Shield?

Quick theory: There is no depiction of Her Grace with a shield in Skyward Sword as far as I can tell, but She is depicted wielding the Goddess Sword in the intro:

Wouldn't be unreasonable that She'd have a shield to go with that. Although not a unique design by the time of Ocarina of Time the Hylian Shield seems to be a one of a kind item in Skyward Sword and Lanayru just sort of has it without explanation, and it already has the name Hylian Shield, which is kind of odd as in Skyward Sword Hylia is usually used to refer specifically to the Goddess, not the more general usages we see in other games. The race of point-eared humans is never called Hylians and there is no Lake Hylia yet.

Could Hylian Shield be a direct reference to the Goddess? The Dragons did receive directions from Her Grace and She left things like Goddess Cubes around to directly aid Her hero. It is quite possible that she also left the shield with the thunder dragon so that he might some day give it to Link. Then after Skyward Sword Link becomes the first Knight of Hyrule and his/Her shield design is officially adopted by the nation.

I believe Lanayru did it, when he understood what was Link going to do (or what he already did by a certain point of view), then the shield's design was used as basis for the other shields.

Or this, or that shield is simply an easter egg and is not canon.

I don't know if it helps, but in OOT, TP and SS's european translations (Italian, Spanish and maybe French too, I don't remember) the shield is called "Hylia's Shield". Also consider that the Euro translations are made directly from Japanese without passing through NoA's poor translations...

(NoE's and expecially Italian translations are often done really bad, I mean "Villaggio Calbarico" when in AlttP is still Kakariko?)

However I checked and Hylia's shield should be the correct translation from Japanese.

I think that Hylia is intended to be the people, not the goddess, though.

Yeah. I am pretty sure in one of the TP versions. Shad call the Hylians the people of Hylia. So the shield would be the shield of the people of Hylia. The Hylia shielx or the shield of Hylia fir short. But it can also be from the goddess Hylia

Re: Hylian Shield = Hylia's Shield?

riomhare, I'm pretty sure you are correct. Hylia probably gave the shield to Lanayru so that the hero could one day be tested and rewarded with it. The design was later adopted by the Royal Family to be used by the knights.

I agree that names of places and people are translated poorly in the Italian version (mostly because of translator Barbara Pisani which completely ruined TP), but it's also true that NoA tends to make things up. A good example is the word "Twili". Or the definition "Her Grace"; there's no trace of this title in the Japanese text: Zelda is called instead "The Voice of the Goddess" both in Japanese and in Italian, and as far as I can tell, this does not appear in NoA's translation.
(as for the names such as Calbarico, Geld, Lutera etc...they're just -bad- localization choices, nothing that changes the overall meanings though)
Conclusion: the Euro localization is generally more accurate than the American one. Hylia's Shield.
