The Call of the Hero

Alright, I'm finally getting around to my next fic, which is a TP sequel. Enjoy!

The Call of the Hero

Chapter 1

Link and Ganondorf clashed swords once again. This time, one would fall and Link made sure it wasn't him. He pushed the monstrous man away from him, which caused Ganondorf to lose his balance. Link took this opportunity and attacked Ganondorf. He fell, and Link jumped in the air, driving the Master Sword through the wound in Ganondorf's stomach.

Ganondorf screamed. His scream was of such agonizing pain that it almost sounded inhuman. Link jumped off Ganondorf, but left the sword in him. He walked away from the motionless Mann, and went to the princess of Hyrule, Zelda.

"Is... is he dead?" Zelda asked.

"He better be," Link growled. Even after such a harsh battle, Link did not seem too tired. Instead he seemed to act as if he had just got done sparring.

"Link," said Zelda.

"Yes?" he replied.

"Thank you for your help. Without you... I fear that Hyrule would be stuck in the twilight forever. I also thank you for believing me and for saving the kingdom, I am forever indebted to you. But all is not ell as we lost a- wait who's that?"

Zelda had noticed someone sitting on the hill in the distance. Link turned around, and saw a familiar shape. He grinned, and ran towards the person. He stopped midway to the person when he realized something was wrong.

The person stood up, and Link's jaw almost dropped to the floor. Standing in front of him was a woman with the most beautiful face and body Link had ever seen. She had flaming orange hair and pale blue skin. She was also wearing a black dress that was flashy, but appropriate.

"What?" she asked Link. "Am I too beautiful for words?"

"No," Link said. "I just thought you were dead."

"I thought I was, too. But fate was on my side, and I survived."

"What?" said another voice. "I thought I killed you."

Link turned around and saw Ganondorf standing, alive. The Master Sword was still embedded in him, and he was breathing heavily.

"Well, apparently you didn't." Midna remarked.

"Don't mess with me," he growled. "Mark my words. The history of light and shadow shall be written in blood."

Ganondorf looked up to the sky and smiled. He felt the power of the Triforce fading from him. He closed his eyes, and the Master Sword released more of its ominous power into his body. He grunted, and remained motionless for several seconds before falling over.

"I think he's dead now," Midna said.

"I he is," Link said. "I have an idea on where to go with him."

"Where?"

"Kakariko Gorge. You can levitate him to there, and drop him down into the pit."

"Okay, I'll try."

Mid a focused her energy, and everyone turned into the little Twilight Squares. They all returned to normal, and Mid a proceeded to send Ganondorf's body into the gorge.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Link, Midna, and Zelda were standing in the Mirror Chamber. It had been a few hours since they put Ganondorf's body into the gorge.

"Well, I guess this is good bye." Midna said.

"There must be someway that we can keep in touch," Zelda said.

"Well, I do have something for you Link."

Midna searched in her pouch before pulling out a small object wrapped up in a blanket.

"It's the Twilight Shard. You can keep it to remind you of our time together. But don't touch it directly as you'll turn into a wolf, and won't be able to turn back without a little spell."

"Thank you." was all Link managed to say.

Midna smiled, and turned to Zelda. "I didn't have anything for you, but now I realize that I already gave you a gift. When you gave part of your soul to me, we shared those memories."

"I can recall memories, but wasn't there." Zelda said in shock.

"I must be going now. My people need me just as much as your people need you." Midna said a she approached the portal. "Good bye, Link. Good bye, Zelda."

Midna allowed a tear to roll down her face, and then sent it towards the mirror. She stepped through the portal, just before her tear hit the mirror, and shattered it into dust.

Re: The Call of the Hero

Hello there. Pinkie Pie's name is Pinkie Pie, and she's sad that your story hasn't received any comments. No matter the subject matter, no author should be subjected to such silence.

Pinkie Pie
isn't also totally hoping to become the new Creative Corner mod.

Thankfully, the things Pinkie Pie wants to touch upon are very general, so she doesn't need to associate them with particular parts of your story. In no particular order, here they are:
  1. Dialogue tags. This is something Pinkie Pie had to shake off as well. Though Pinkie Pie hates to classify you as a less experienced writer, she's going to, since she doesn't know much about you. Less experienced writers tend to slap funky dialogue tags all over their dialogue. This tends to stem from a fear that the dialogue won't convey in the manner you want it to, and that the reader won't understand it.

Pinkie Pie can tell you that isn't the case.

Things like "he replied", "he growled", and "he asked" draw attention to themselves, often pulling the reader out of the stupor you hopefully managed to create with your words. A good old "he said" cuts it just fine. The circumstances and wording of the dialogue will convey just fine the tone you're trying to create. If not, try going back and revising the description surrounding your dialogue, or the dialogue itself.

  2. The characters. Though Pinkie Pie hasn't touched Twilight Princess, she has fond memories of it, despite the disappointment expressed by other members towards it. What she does remember are the characters of Zelda and Ganondorf. While your portrayal of them isn't "bad", it feels off, especially given their personalities in Twilight Princess.

Take Zelda. In contrast to the youthful innocence she possessed in Ocarina of Time, the Princess Zelda of Twilight Princess seemed a wiser person, more adult in all her dealings. Each encounter with her was quiet, almost diplomatic. The manner in which she spoke always felt formal, yet respectful. In your story, she doesn't seem to embody many of those traits. In fact, Zelda and Link seem almost to have the same personality, without anything to distinguish them.

Not only that, but you've altered dialogue from its original state. If your intention is to enhance scenes from the video games, try and maintain some of the original dialogue. While this isn't always possible, what with the introduction of Link as a speaking character, it'll help to lend a certain atmosphere to the story. For instance, having Ganondorf say, "Don't mess with me!" feels less powerful and ominous than just, "The history of light and shadow will be written in blood."

  3. Your descriptions are lacking. Where are Link and Ganondorf fighting? What do they look like? What's the terrain like? What does the Mirror Chamber look like? Even though you're writing fanfiction, assume that the reader knows nothing about anything in the universe. Describe it as you would if you were writing a story of your own creation. Would someone unfamiliar with the Zelda universe be able to understand any of what's going on, outside of the actions taken by characters?

Alright, Pinkie Pie be done. She'll check back again to see if you've updated your story. Good luck with writin' and all that.

Re: The Call of the Hero

Thank you for the advice. I will revamp the first chapter soon, but I'd rather get the fic going, first.

Chapter 2

Link stood in disbelief. The one person that was with him the entire time was now gone. It seemed like everything he had gone through didn't mean as much anymore. He no longer had someone to talk to about his adventures, sure he could tell the Ordonian children, but it just wasn't the same.

He was not the only one surprised by Midna's action. Zelda, who did not know Midna that well, but did know that she did this to protect both worlds. What did surprise her was that it was so sudden. Midna destroyed the mirror only a day after Link defeated Ganondorf. She didn't stay to help with the damage that her people caused. While this did disappoint Zelda, she knew Midna was going to have to rebuild her own kingdom as well.

Both were standing where the mirror used to be, when the sand around them started to swirl. The sand died down, and the Sages were on the pillars high above Link and Zelda. As it always had been since Ganondorf's execution, there was no water Sage. Even the pillar for where it would be was damaged.

"Link..." said one of the Sages. "Your actions have saved Hyrule... You and the Princess can be returned to Hyrule... when you're ready."

"I think we're ready," Link said. He looked over at Zelda, and she nodded in agreement.

The Sages spoke a dialect that was unfamiliar to Link. He felt a tingling sensation in the back of his head, and next thing he knew, he was in the market area of Castle Town. However, things were not the same.

The air around him was thick, and there was debris everywhere. The two quickly looked in the direction of the castle, and it was not there. Ganondorf and Midna's battle had destroyed it. The two decided to head in that direction, but neither was prepared for what lie ahead.

The two walked down a deserted street, and into a square that was unrecognizable. There were large chunks of the castle throughout the square. The giant fountain in the middle was destroyed, several of the buildings were damaged, and there some people who were caught in the crossfire. Several bodies laid strewn out in the square. Some were mangled messes, others had gaping holes in their bodies.

Zelda had to look away, she couldn't handle the sight of so many innocent people being dead. She did not think of these people, but the number of soldiers whose lives were taken. These thoughts made Zelda nearly cry, but she managed to keep her composure.

"We will have to have the bodies moved," Zelda said. "Then, we will move on to rebuilding the castle."

"I'm sorry," Link said. "I wish there was some way that I could have prevented this."

"Link... Don't be so hard on yourself. This was something that you could not prevent. I am still grateful for all that you did."

"Thank you." Link said, and he began to walk away.

"Where are you going?" Zelda asked.

"Home. But I'm also stopping by Kakariko to see the children off. I'm sorry to leave at a time like this, but I have to protect as many people as possible. You can protect those here, and I can protec hose in Kakariko and Ordon."

"Very well then. You do still have a duty as the hero, and I must acknowledge that. Farewell, Link."

"Farewell, Princess." Link bowed to Zelda, and left the dismantled town.

When Link finally got out into the open fields, he pulled out the Horse Call he was given by Ilia. He blew into it, and a beautiful noise came out of it. He waited several seconds, and then heard hooves followed by a whinny. Link's horse, Epona, trotted up to him, and whinnied, happily. Link checked her for scars from the previous day, and was surprised to see none. He mounted his trusty steed, and the two headed off to Kakariko.

Link made it to Kakariko by midday, he had left Castle Town at dawn. The village had seen a lot in the past year. People were taken, and business slowly died for those who remained. After that, one of the remaining businesses died down due to lack of communication with the Gorons. Finally, the Twiligh Invasion occurred, which really hurt Kakariko's business reputation.

Link rode Epona calmly through the village, and led her to the spring. He dismounted her, and made his way over to Renado's house. Before he even got halfway there, the door swung open, and four people came running out.

"Link!" yelled one of them. "You're okay!"

"Yeah, I am," Link said. He was happy to see the four kids again. They were Beth, Colin, Talo, and Malo. Beth was talking to him when another person came out.

Ilia.

Link got up, and went over to her. When he finally reached her, he smiled at her. However, she had a disappointed look on her face. Link opened his mouth to say something, but was cut short as Ilia slapped him hard across the cheek. He then saw that she was in tears.

"You promised!" Ilia cried. "You promised that you wouldn't do anything that you couldn't handle!"

"Ilia," Link said, softly. "I'm here."

"I know. It's just that you had told us the last time that you were going to the castle to see the princess, and then the castle blew up. Ever since we got kidnapped, danger seems to follow you."

"Ilia, listen. I wasn't in the castle or near it for that matter when it blew up. Also, being the hero means that danger will always be around me. Besides, I did defeat the great evil that invaded this country."

"I don't care if you're some hero or not. You're still just as vulnerable as the rest of us."

"You're right, I am. No one isn't susceptible to death, but I'd rather not talk about that. Instead, we should go home, don't you think?"

"I guess so... At least I can keep a closer eye on you there."

Link chuckled a little, and walked into the shaman's house. Renado was sitting at his desk reading a text that looked older than Link himself.

"Link!" Renado exclaimed. "It's good to see you alive and well!"

"Thank you," Link said. "Listen, the children want to go home. We need a carriage. Do you still have the one that Ralis was brought in?"

"As it so happens, I do. I took it up to the graveyard. I'll go fetch it, and you tell the children to get ready."

After about an hour, everyone was ready to go.

"Bye, Renado," the children said.

Renado waved good bye in return.

Link mounted Epona, and he exited the village, followed by the carriage.

The trip home was uneventful. He took a glance into the gorge where Ganondorf's body was, but could not see it due to how deep the gorge was. They continud southward, and entered the forest. He and the children gave Coro a wave as they passed, and he smiled back at them. The convoy then passed over a bridge, and Link knew that they were home.

When they got in sight of his house, he saw a banner that said "WELCOME HOME LINK! ILIA! AND CHILDREN!", and saw the entire village waiting for him.

Home at last, Link thought.

Re: The Call of the Hero

Chapter 3

Link got off Epona and began to remember everything that happened before the previous two years. He remembered learning to catch a wild goat with help from Bo. He also remembered how Uli, Rusl's wife, would take care of the children while their parents were working.

Link was so immersed in the past that he didn't realize that Bo was thanking him. Link snapped back to reality as Bo repeated himself.

"Thank you Link," said Bo. "Your actions not only saved the children, but also the world. Rusl told me what you did, I cannot even begin to fathom what Hyrule went through before you saved it. But... we must celebrate to your good deed. Also, is Ilia safe and fine? I heard from Rusl about her memory..."

"I'm right here father," Ilia said. "I'm fine. Everything that happened seems like a dream now."

"I'm just glad your safe," was all her father could say.

The other families shared a moment similar to this with their children, too. After these reunions were over, everyone went into the village. Everyone stayed up either all night or as long as they could. The party consisted mostly of Link telling of his adventures. He left out any mentions of being a wolf or of Midna.

Uli and the other women had cooked a delicious meal to go along with some ale that Bo had. Link had forgotten that he was of age by Hyrule's standards, which Ordon follows to an extent, and he tried some of the ale. Unfortunately for Link, he didn't care for it, and Bo considered it fortunate as their was more for him. Fado, on the other hand, became completely wasted before the party ended, and was out on the ground next to where everyone was at.

"You know what?" Rusl said. "I'm not only glad your home to be certain your safe, but also because I am getting tired of eating pumpkin and goat everyday."

"Why were you eating it so much?" Link asked.

"Well, you see, we thought you would've been home a while ago, but it seems as though you stayed for a few extra days."

"Well, there was something that had to be taken care of,. And speaking of that, can I borrow that Cucco sometime?"

"Are you returning the Master Sword?"

"Yeah, my time with it is over. I need to settle down for awhile."

"I see," Rusl said with a hint of uncertainty in his voice.

"I don't know about the rest of you, but I have a big day ahead of me." Bo said, and he got up. After that, everyone else slowly left, and the party was over.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Over three years had passed since the homecoming party, and many things had happened.

In Ordon Village, Uli had her baby, a girl she named Ruto; and Talo had matured greatly, and quit running away from his mother.

Mayor Bo, however, did something extraordinary. He, Rusl, and Link went to Hyrule Castle, and signed some papers with Zelda in order to make Ordon part of Hyrule. The deal allowed traders and farmers to come and go to Ordon as they pleased. This helped Ordon thrive in new ways.

Ilia slowly went from being a babysitter to being next to Link all day, everyday. Her constant presence did not bother Link at first, but soon he could hardly do any of the obs he had in the time it usually took him. To the rest of the village, their relationship was viewed as "cute", as they were both still young and trying to be together all the time.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kakariko Village did not see quite as much change as Ordon, but it did get better, albeit slowly. Barnes, Renado, and Luda remained as the survivors of the Twilight Invasion in Kakariko. No one else hadreturned, and the three of them didn't blame them. Kakariko was in bad shape still. It still didn't have any sort of diplomatic leader and Renado acted as the leader for the time being. With a new path between Catle Town and Ordon, the only people that seemed to even care about Kakariko outside of the village were Link, Ilia, and Telma.

Castle Town, on the other hand, did see massive changes. After Zelda had seen what the destruction of the castle had done to the town, she immediately hired workers to rebuild the castle. The castle took nearly two years to complete. It would have taken longer if not for some of the castle still being intact. It could have taken even less time if it weren't for the hundreds of rooms in the castle that Zelda still did not know why they were their.

As for the town just outside the castle, the cleanup and rebuilding began, but was put on hold due to budgeting reasons. During the cleanup, many more people were found, some alive, some not. One person that was found alive ws Dr. Borville, however he soon suffered a stroke, and passed shortly after. In total, only twenty some citizens were killed as a result of the astle destruction out of over three hundred people.

EDIT: Decided tocombine the chapters instead.

Re: The Call of the Hero

Plot should get going now...

Chapter 4

Link's lifestyle had changed immensely ever since Ordon became a part of Hyrule. Many Hylians now came to what was once a quiet and tranquil village. All they wanted to do was trade their goods for crops and goat meat. Most of the time Link would be the one to greet them since his house was the first building they would see.

One time a man came and was wanting to sell some strange statue. He said the statue spoke to him, but Bo didn't buy into it and the man left. He had said that he would pay an immense amount of money for it, but, again, Bo said no.

Ever since he signed the treaty with Zelda, Link had stowed away his tunic, and reverted to his farmer's clothing. He did that so he wouldn't be pestered with questions from all of the Hylians. Link was somewhat of a Glossophobic, he didn't like talking in front of large crowds. He didn't mind talking in front of his fellow villagers as he knew them his whole life. If he came out in his Hero's garb, everyone would want to hear of how he saved Hyrule. Instead, he decided to play it safe, and hide the tunic in his basement, that way he would have it if he ever needed it.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

One day, Link heard a familiar voice. "Hey!" shouted the Postman.

"Hello," Link said with a smile.

"I have a letter for you, Mr. Link," said the Postman, as he dug around in his bag for the letter.

Link waited patiently for a couple of minutes before the Postman handed him the letter.

"Well, onward to mail," the Postman said as his farewell.

"Yeah... onward..." Link said, halfheartedly, as he was looking at the markings on the envelope. The letter was from the castle, possibly from Zelda, herself.

"Who is that from?" asked a voice that made Link jumps slightly. He turned and saw Ilia standing close to where he was.

"It's from the castle," he replied.

"Open it," she demanded.

"I was going to..." Link muttered as he tore open the envelope.

"Read it to me."

"Fine."

Link,
I, Princess Zelda, extend to you an invitation on behalf of saving the country. I ask for your help in my coronation. I also ask that you arrive in due time, so as to practice. This ceremony is very important, and I ask that you bring the Master Sword.
Zelda

"Well, isn't that cute?" Ilia said.

"What do you mean?" Link asked.

"Zelda is asking you to coronate her. You. The Hero. It's like those stories my mum would read me."

"Are you jealous?"

"No!" Ilia retaliated, before blushing.

"Don't worry, I only think of the Princess as my friend, and nothing more."

"Really?"

"Yeah. Now, I don't mean to sound rude, but I need to get ready."

"You're right, I guess I am being a little hard on you, but I just want to be sure you're safe."

"Don't worry about me. Worry about yourself." Link said, and he went into his house.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After a few hours of packing, Link was done packing.

He had on his farmer's clothes still, but the tunic was in a knapsack along with his bow and slingshot. He chose not to wear the tunic for he knew it would get very dirty before he got there.

Link exited his home, and entered the village. He walked to Rusl's house, and found the man sleeping on the porch. However, he woke up when he heard Link approaching.

"I heard you got a letter from the Princess," Rusl said.

"Yeah, I'm going to be the one coronating her." Link said.

"Hmm, now that's something."Rusl said, nodding his head.

"I actually came here to ask a favor of you," Link said, ignoring Rusl's last comment.

"What is it?"

"I need to borrow that Cucco again."

"Very well then," Rusl said. "I'll meet you at the spot in the morning, you and I both need some rest."

"Thank you," Link said, and he returned home.

Link climbed into his bed, knowing that a new task was upon him. He soon fell asleep to the sounds of nature.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The next day, Link was preparing to leave when Ilia came over.

"I just came to say good bye," Ilia said.

"I know that's not all you have to say," Link said.

"Actually that is," Ilia said.

Link gave her a questionable look.

"Whatever," she said, and walked away. She was only a few steps further when she turned and said, "Link, remember what you promised me before all that happened? Well, I want you to keep it in mind. I want you to be safe, and not do anything that you can't handle. I have a feeling that something is going to happen. I can just-"

"Ilia," Link interrupted. "Don't worry. I'll be fine. You know that I am more than capable of holding my own. Now, I need to meet Rusl."

"If you say so, but you do seem eager to leave. Why is that?"

"I don't really know," Link said. "I just seem to have a thirst for adventure. I want to go go go. The life I live here is great, but it's also lackluster. Part of me is hoping that what you just said is true, but another part of me hopes that everything goes well at the castle."

"I understand." Ilia said, and kissed Link good bye.

Link nodded, and walked into the forest.

Re: The Call of the Hero

Chapter 5

Link made his way through the forest to Coro's house. He stopped to talk to the man.

"Hey, Coro?" Link asked.

"Well, hi there, Link," Coro said. "What can I do for you?"

"I was just wondering if you saw Rusl come through here."

"Yes, I did. He was headed through the cave."

"Thank you, I wanted to make sure he actually was going to meet me."

"If you're going through the cave, I can fill your lantern."

"No thanks, there were some torches that I lit, and I'm sure Rusl relit them for me."

"Oh well, guess you'll be going now, won't you?"

"Yeah, I really have to meet Rusl. I'll come back, and we can talk, how about that?"

Coro smiled and nodded. "Very well, that works."

Link turned around, and walked back to the cave. He made his way through the cave, which was lit. He then made his way through the swamp area. The strange fog had disappeared shortly after Ganondorf's defeat. He finally came to the dropoff, and Rusl was there, waiting for him.

"I was wondering whether or not you were going to show up." Rusl said.

"I was packing, that's all." Link said. "Did you bring the cucco?"

"Yes, I did. Why are you acting impatient?"

"I just want to get this over with, that's all."

"If you say so, then here you go."

"Thank you." Link said, and he used the cucco to navigate the chasm between the forest and the Sacred Grove.

Link had just landed, when he heard music playing. The tune had a peppy vibe to it, but it also sounded haunting. He knew that the Skull Kid was playing it, and he went into the grove with his sword drawn.

However, no puppets showed up. In fact, the only noise was the music, but it seemed to be coming from everywhere. Link shook his head, and focused. He thought for a second, and remembered the path to the sword.

He followed the path, and was shocked to see that there was no sign of the Skull Kid. Link headed over to the Master Sword, and pulled it from the pedestal. The unique ring of the blade echoed over the music, and Link was quickly reminded of what this weapon was capable of.

Link made his way back to the entrance of the grove, when he heard a giggle. He knew what was coming and readied himself. Again, what Link had expected to come, did not. Instead, the Skull Kid jumped down from one of the high branches.

"Have you returned to play?" Skull Kid asked.

"No," Link replied. "But if you're here, then who's playing the music?" Link asked as he realized the music was still playing.

Skull Kid sighed. "You can come out," he said.

The music came to a stop, and another Skull Kid jumped from a high branch. It was hard for Link to explain, but this Skull Kid was older, much older.

"See?" the younger Skull Kid said. "We're more alike than you know."

"What do you mean by that?" Link asked.

"We both only have one person who knows us truly. All others only know a fragment of our true selves."

"Many people know of my deeds."

"True, but few know how you accomplished those deeds, just like few know that I am still alive."

"What do you mean 'still alive'?"

"I was living a fine life in Castle Town when those monsters appeared. My father was in the army, he was killed with relative ease; and my mum was a fighter. My mum stayed behind to let me get away. I fled into the woods, and fell down the chasm. But something grabbed me, and brought me here. That something was my friend here. He knows what its like to be alone. To not have anyone try to save you."

"You truly think that?"

"Yes, he told me, and I believe him. He tells the truth."

"He's corrupted you."

"What? No, he hasn't."

"He's managed to make you rethink everything."

"Since when have you been Mr. Psychiatrist?" the older Skull Kid asked.

"I can tell that you did something to him because he seems so quick to defend it."

"Are you saying that if you truly believe something that you won't defend it?"

"No, I'm saying that he seems to be blocking out other explanations. He thinks that you are some preacher, and should be believed."

"You're so naïve. You don't realize what I have seen, now do you?"

"Enlighten me."

"I have seen numerous heroes run around and try to keep evil from spilling into the land. Each one has accomplished his goal in one way or another. One hero in particular actually found me, and played the tune I was just playing. He promised that he would return to visit me, but he never has. I play the song as often as possible in case he does decide to return."

"You both are insane, I'm out of here."

"You don't want to play?" asked the younger Sull Kid.

"I'll be back, I promise."

"He lies." said Old Skull Kid.

"Are you?" asked Young Skull Kid.

Before Link could answer, roughly fifty puppets appeared. Link readied himself, and attacked the puppets. Each one fell with a single blow, but the sheer number of them was overwhelming. When Link finally got room, he made for the exit.

"No, I promise I will return to play." Link said, and dashed for the exit. Link kept seeing flashes of a wall where the exit was. He dove, and rolled through the archway. When he stopped, he saw that a wall had indeed formed where the entrance was. There was no way back in to the grove.

Link had spent so much time in the grove that he didn't realize what time it was. The sun was setting, and he raced home.

I can talk to Coro tomorrow on my way to Castle Town, Link thought.

Link made his way to his home, and lay down on his bed. Unbeknownst to him, but this would be the last time he'll sleep in his bed for a long time.

Re: The Call of the Hero

Chapter 6

Link awoke to the usual sounds of Ordon: birds chirping and Epona neighing. He crawled out of bed, and donned the Hero's garb. He picked up the Master Sword, and replaced his other sword with it. Link made sure that he had everything he needed. He had already gotten the two most important things, the Master Sword and the Hero's clothes, but he didn't really need anything else.

Link ate a quick breakfast of Ordon stew, a combination of goat meat, chicken, and pumpkin all drenched in pumpkin juice and meat juice. He also drank a pint of Ordon goat milk. The meal was delicious for being so simple. "The best things come from home," was what the adults always said, and he couldn't agree more. All his friends, no, his family, were here as well as a life that was perfectly acceptable. The only thing it lacked was adventure. It felt as though he was doing the same thing over and over again.

After Link ate his breakfast, he decided to pack some of the meat that wasn't in the stew to take as a meal. He knew the journey to Castle Town would take all day, and he definitely needed to eat before he got there.

Link finished packing his food and he heard voices outside. He looked outside, and saw Ilia, Bo, Rusl, Fado, and the other villagers standing there, waiting for him. He grabbed his knapsack, and put it over the shoulder opposite his swordhand. He then put his quiver and bow on the same way as the sword was. Link left his house, and everyone went quiet.

"You know why I'm leaving don't you?" Link asked.

"Yes, we all know," said Bo. "And we are proud of you, too."

"We all wish you the best of luck," said Rusl. "We believe that the princess is making the right choice in electing you to her coronation."

"I believe so, too," Link said.

"Link?" Ilia asked Link.

"What is it?" he responded.

"I'm sorry for everything that I'veput you through the past few days. I just wanted to be with you as much as possible before you left, that's all."

"I understand," Link said, and to the rest of the villagers, he said, "I need to go, now. I need to be there as early aspossible according to Zelda. If I leave now, I may be able tomake just before dusk."

"Don't push Epona too far," Ilia reminded Link.

"Don't worry, I won't," Link said with a wave goodbye. He mounted Epona, and he left.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The journey to Castle Town went as uneventful as ever. He ate the food he packed, but was starving when he arrived in Castle Town. The smells coming from the market and Telma's bar were not helping his growing hunger pains.

He guided Epona through the somewhat busy marketplace, and on through the Town Center. He was mesmerized by the new fountain that was put up. It was simple, yet effective. Link noted that it was made from some sort of rock that would probably be found on Death Mountain.

He arrived at the newly built castle. The castle was more simplistic looking than before, but it made up for it in its grandeur. It was still massive, and could be spotted from almost anywhere in Hyrule.

He guided Epona over to the stalls, and was surprised at how full it was. The stalls could hold at least fifty horses, and nearly everyone was taken. He put Epona in the closest stall available, and made his way to the entrance.

When he stepped inside, two guards stopped him. He told them who he was, and what he was there for. The two guards let him pass through, and a worker escorted him to his room.

When the two reached his room, the servant left him, but not before saying, "Her Majesty is expecting you for lunch tomorrow."

Link thought to himself, Why lunch? He shrugged, and decided he would eat the leftover meat he had for breakfast. It would be like a tease of what his normal breakfast had consisted of.

He found his room to be of adequate size. It contained a dresser, a bed, a small closet, a desk, and a bathroom off to the side. He rid himself of his weapons and his knapsack, and undressed down to his farmer's clothing. Those clothes substituted as his nightwear while he was wearing the Hero's Clothes.

He layed down on his bed, and thought how many other people would actually show up. He hoped it wasn't too many, and fell asleep shortly after.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A man stepped away from a crystal ball, and turned to the other man standing next to him.

"It is nearly time," he said. "Tell them to be prepared for when the time comes."

The other man merely nodded, and left.

Re: The Call of the Hero

Don't worry, plenty of chapters to come! In fact, the villain won't be introduced for another two tofive chapters, and I will guarantee that this story will be longer than my previous one.

Chapter 7

Link had a hard time sleeping that night. It wasn't because he was in a foreign bed, no, it was because he had a nightmare. He had had several nightmares before, but none seemed to be as bad.

His dream started with himbeing back in his home of Ordon. He was herding the goats into the barn for Fado. It took him no time at all, and he finished the task in good time. He left the ranch, and went into the town. There he saw everyone else of Ordon. They were all smiling and having fun. It was the best place to be, ever.

But then, the sky suddenly went red and everything went grim. He heard a laughter behind him, and turned. There he saw a man, about seven feet tall. He had eyes that were black as could be, and his skin was a pasty white. He had a massive broadsword holstered on his back. His armor was black, but rusted from bloodshed.

"Turn around, and you shall see... the future," was all he said.

Link, curious as he was, turned around. He wasn't in Ordon anymore, or so he thought. There were monsters everywhere, ones that would come from a horror story, and they were treating the humans as slaves.

"This all can be changed, but you're not prepared for what you must do to prevent it," the man said. "In due time, though, you shall know what your fate is."

Link woke up, and his head felt like it was about to explode. He drew the curtains back in his room, and saw that it was morning. He was surprised that he managed to sleep all night. It seemed that any little noise he heard, it would wake him up. He figured it was just from being so tired.

Link ate his breakfast, a piece of goat meat, and got going. He became used to eatingin rations when he was with Midna. Those doys seemed like forever ago to him. In fact, he barely remembers what all happened until he would tell of his adventures to the Ordon children.

Link left his room, and headed towards the main hall. On his way, he saw numerous people that he didn't know. They were all wearing high-end clothing, and had an expression of not wanting to be there. Many turnedaway from Link with an emphatic "hmph".

When Link finally reached the main hall, he saw a familiar face: Renado. Renado was the shaman of Kakariko Village. His knowledge of herbal healing became famous when he saved the Zora, Ralis.

Renado greeted Link, "Good morning, Link. I didn't expect you to be here."

"Morning, Renado." Link replied. "I guess saving one of the parts of being a Hero is going to ceremonies like this."

"I guess so," Renado said. "Listen, will you come with me? I have something to tell you."

"Sure," Link said, and the two went outside.

"Link," Renado began. "Kakariko Village has become much worse over the past years. No one really has a need to go there as there is a path between here and Ordon. Also, the Gorons sell most of there goods at the market. We do have hot springs, but due to a recent drought, they are all but gone.

"Now, Barnes and I have been working on the hotel. We asked the Gorons for help, and they agreed to help with getting the wood for it. However, the project fell through because of Barnes. He changed when the darkness came. He always said, in front of the children, that a woman was kidnapped. He never disclosed whoto anyone, but I knew who it was. It was his daughter. He tried to wait for her, but he eventually gave up. Now, I had to do something so that he wouldn't completely lose his sanity. I enlisted the aid of the Gorons, and they are currently watching over him and Luda. If Barnes decides to blow up the town, the Gorons will get Luda to a safe place, and hopefully him, too. I just hope that it will never come to that."

Link could not believe what he had just heard. Not only was Kakariko doing badly because of what he did by signing the treaty, but also Barnes had become somewhat unstable. He had a feeling that Barnes was always not completely with it, after all he treats his bombs like his own kids.

Link didn't notice it inside, but Renado looked much more stressed than before. His eyes looked weary, and there were lines on his forehead from frustration.

"I don't know what I Can do, but maybe you can bring it up to Zelda." Link said.

"I might do that." Renado said. "Are you going to the lunch with her later?"

"Yes, I am." Link said.

"Well then, I'll be seeing you there."

"I wonder how many others got invited."

"I have no idea, but I'm going to go back to my room to prepare."

"Bye." Link said, and the two separated from each other. Link went back to his room, and waited for the lunch to come.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Link waited for a few hours, and lunchtime had arrived. He was informed by one of the maids when it was time to go to lunch. He was told to follow some of the other guests. Link did just that, and found that he and Renado were not the only ones to be invited. There were at least twenty other people there besides him. Link noticed that there were namecards on where they would sit. He was going to be next to Renado,at the end where Zelda was.

The lunch was served, and everyone ate. No one talked to Link or Renado. In fact, they would occasionally shoot them looks of disgust.

After everyone was done eating, Zelda stood up, and everything went quiet.

"Thank you all for being here," Zelda said. "As you should know, I ambeing coronated to become the queen of this country. I will see to it that our army gets revised. After what I witnessed a few years ago, I believe that the army is in need of recruiting. Also, I have been weary enough to see that the treaty with Ordon went well, and I believe that so long as we take a peaceful approach, we can take the other surrounding communities in. Thank you."

It was then that Link remembered what Renado told him. He cleared his throat, and Zelda looked at him. He gave Zelda a quick rundown of what had happened to Kakariko.

Zelda stood up again, and started speaking. "It has come to my attention that the village of Kakariko has not seen much prosperity irecently. The people there have been through a lot, like the rest of this country, in the past few years. I would like to see more people go there. They do not have the resources that we do here to rebuild. If we can spread the word on the state of Kakariko, we should be able to restore it."

Zelda sat down once again, and there was small chat amongst the people there. Soon, people were dismissed, and they returned to their rooms. Link hoped that these people would go to Kakariko, and save it. He also hoped that the ceremony would be over with so he could return home.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Later that afternoon, he was asked to go down to the training grounds. Link followed the servant to the grounds, and saw that Zelda was there.

"Link," Zelda said. "I see you brought the Master Sword. It really isn't needed, but it might get the attention of these other nobles here. They don't believe that I had enough time to grow into my role as a leader, especially since I handed the country over to Zant without much of a fight. They also believe that I'm a bit delusional in my saying that I possess a piece of the Triforce. But none of that matters right now. Instead, I called for you so that we may practice what will happen at the ceremony. Now, listen to my instructions."

The two trained for the ceremony for several hours before they decided to retire to the castle. Link ate another slab of goat meat for dinner, and he went to sleep. The training sessions continued, and they added more people as time went on to see how well everything went as a whole.

When the practice ceremony went without a falter, Zelda decided that everything was perfect and ready to go. She said that the ceremony would take place two days later, and Link was relieved to hear that. The people in the ceremony got a break the day before to be prepared for the real deal.

Re: The Call of the Hero

Ok, long overdue, and hopefully this won't get locked either.

Chapter 8

Link awoke to the sounds of many people talking. He was still very tired, but remembered that today was Zelda's coronation. He knew that he was needed almost immediately after the ceremony started due to his duties. He was tasked with being the one to present Zelda with her crown. However, she also said that she had something special in store for Link during the ceremony.

Link got out of his bed, and changed into the Hero's clothes. They were soft and comfortable, due tothembeing washed by the maids; instead of being completely worn and itchy. He then decided to go get breakfast at the kitchen instead of eating his own meal. He thought it would be a good idea to get to know how many people were going to show up.

When Link arrived at the kitchen, he saw a massive room where at least fifty people were sitting at several tables. He spotted Zelda, and saw an empty seat near her, and sat down in that seat.

The people in the room were very well-groomed. The women had their hair in styles that Link thought unimaginable, and the men were all wearing top hats with several having a spectacle on one eye. When Link saw them, he suddenly felt underdressed, and even like an outcast.

Zelda saw his expression and said, "Don't worry, these people are the guests. They aren't a part of the ceremony."

"It's not that," Link said. "It's just that I'm really nervous, and all these people won't help me at all."

"Whatever do you mean?" Zelda asked.

"Well, you see," Link said. "I'm not very good at talking in front of large crowds."

"You won't be," Zelda replied. "But you will still have to do all that we rehearsed the past few weeks."

"That's good to know. I thought that I had to give a speech orsomething because I was a part of the ceremony."

"Well, you don't. But I do have to give one. On the other hand, aren't you hungry?"

"Yeah, I'm actually starving."

"All the food on the table here is made by the finest chefs and cooks in all of Hyrule, and you can eat as much as you feel necessary."

"Thank you," Link said, and he got up to see what all there was to eat.

He saw biscuits and breads of all kinds in a giant basket. He also saw several meats, one looked like goat meat, and he took some. There were eggs aplenty too, but the one thing that caught Link's eye was the vast amount of drinks that they had.

When Link was done getting his plate, he saw that he got some bread, a few pieces of meat, an egg, and a glass of milk. Link returned to his seat, and began eating. He remembered his manners, and used the knife to try to cut the meat into smaller pieces; however, the meat was thick and hard to cut through.

"Might I suggest something?" said a voice to Link's left.

Link turned and said, "Renado! I never saw you there when I got here."

"I just got here," Renado replied. "Are you ready for the ceremony?"

"As ready as I'll ever be." Link responded.

"Well, that's good to know," Renado said. "You have a much bigger role than most of us here."

"I know," Link said. "But what was it that you were going to suggest?"

"Oh yes," Renado said. "Let me show you a better way to eat that."

Renado picked up two slices of bread on his plate, and stuck some meat on one of them. He then put the other piece of bread on top of the pile of meat. Link had never seen something like it as Ordon was a meat and eggs kind of village. He copied Renado, and took a bite out of his new concoction. The flavor of the meat and bread combined into something extraordinary.

"That was delicious!" Link exclaimed. "What is it, though?"

"It's called a saindwich," Renado said. "Haven't you ever had one before?"

"No," Link replied. "Ordon doesn't get a whole lot of bread, so the meat is mostly mixed into a stew."

"Ah, I see." Renado said.

Link continued eating his food. He was almost done when a bell rang throughout the castle.

"It's nearly time," Zelda said. "The ceremony will start in roughly two hours. Be prepared."

Link and the others that were a part of the ceremony nodded. Everyone got up, and returned to their rooms.

He grabbed the sheath the sword was in, and put it around his shoulder. He was glad that he didn't have to wear any of the knight's armor as it seemed to be tight and caused the wearer to have rigged movements.

He opened one of the drawers, and saw a letter in it. The letter was old and worn. He nearly tore it in half when unfolding it. When hedid get it opened, however, the letter was faded from years of being left in the drawer. He put the letter back into the drawer, and sat down on the bed.

Link waited for the time topass by focusing on what he had to do. Then, there was a knock on the door. He opened it, and the maid who knocked said that he was needed in the entrance hall.

Link went to the entrance hall, and saw a crowd of people there. He made his way towards the front where he saw Zelda trying to get everyone's attention.

Attention!" Zelda nearly yelled. "The ceremony will begin shortly. Now, I want everyone to line up just as we had rehearsed."

Link took his place between two elderly men. They both had their arms crossed, and scrolls in their left hands. He was in the front row, and had to remember what to do.

"It's time," Zelda said.

The doors opened, and Zelda walked out followed by the rest of the members of the ceremony. Link and the two elders led the group to a row of seats behind a podium. He took his seat next to the middle chair, which was for Zelda, and the two elders sat on the other side.

Zelda approached the podium, and began her speech.

"Welcome all to this wonderous event. I am very pleased that you made it here. Now, before I begin, I'd like to invite our dear Father up here to lead us in prayer."

Zelda stepped aside and one of the two elders walked up to the podium. He prayed for everyone to be healthy and for no harm to befall those of Hyrule. He then returned to his seat, and Zelda returned to the podium.

"Now, I'd like to introduce our eldest scholar."

The other elder walked up to the podium, and gave a small speech.

"Today, we are gathered here to witness the coronation of our beloved princess. We shall witness the dramatic change of a person with no power to one with absolute. Today is a day for a new leaf to be turned over. Today, we shall witness an event that of utmost grandeur."

While he was giving his speech, Link looked out into the crowd. He saw no one recognizable. However, everyone suddenly disappeared, and there were bloodstains all over the courtyard. He looked to the sky, and saw it was a dark red. Then, a pair of sinister eyes appeared, and looked right at him. He shook his head, and rubbed his forehead. He had no idea what just happened, but it didn't seem to be too good.

"Thank you," said Zelda. "Now, I'd like to introduce several members of the Council."

Zelda named off each member of her new council, and they stood up and bowed. The crowd applauded everyone after they were named, and the council sat down.

"Now, I'd like to reintroduce our elder scholar."

"Thank you," the elder scholar said. "We are now prepared for the coronation to begin. Will our beloved Father and Link please step up?" Link and the Father stood up, and approached the edge of the stage. "Our Father shall lead the coronation, and Link will crown our Princess."

The elder scholar bowed to both the Father and Zelda, and returned to his seat.

"Princess of Hyrule, state your name," began the Father.

"Zelda Daphnese Hyrule." Zelda said.

"Are you the rightful bearer of the stone of the Royal Family?"

"Yes, I am." Zelda said, and handed one of her necklaces to the Father.

"Now, kneel down, and await the crown."

Zelda knelt down. A man appeared by Link's side, and he had the crown. Link took the crown, and placed it carefully on top of Zelda's head.

"The ceremony is now complete. Now, for the Queen to give her speech."

The Father retired to his chair, and Zelda resumed her position at the podium.

"Link, will you stay here for a moment?" Zelda asked, and Link remained where he stood."I'd like to take this opportunity to congratulate you for all of your hard work, and for saving this country two years ago. Now, will you hand me the Master Sword?"

Link handed Zelda the Master Sword, and she told him to kneel. He knelt, and she tapped his shoulders with the edge of the blade.

"Link," Zelda said. "Through acts of bravery and acts of determination you have saved this country from eternal despair. For that, I thank you. You are now a proud member of Hyrule's Front. This group of warriors are for the best only. Those who do the bravest things are intiated into this group. Congratulations Link, and may you always be remembered."

Everyone applauded to Link's intiation, and he bowed to the crowd. Zelda returned the Master Sword, and Link sat down in his seat.

Zelda returned to the podium, and gave her speech. She told of all that she planned on doing for Hyrule, and that some of it was already in the works. She told of how she planned on creating a two more postions for the Council, one for the Gorons and one for the Zoras.

Link listened to Zelda's speech, and was amazed at how good she was at giving speeches. He wished that he could do that.

Then, Zelda bowed once more, and turned to the group. Everyone stood up, and walked back into the castle. Once there, everyone dispersed to their rooms.

Before Link could return to his room, Zelda stopped him.

"Link?" Zelda asked.

"What is it?" Link said.

"Are you going to leave now?"

"No, it takes almost all day to get from Ordon to here, and I'd never want to put Epona through that at nighttime. Why'd you ask?"

"Well, I've been hearing these voices. They say that something is coming, and that I should be aware of it."

"I've had something similar to that. In fact, it was a dream. I dreamt that all of my village was overrun by monsters, and that the villagers were slaves. A voice told me that my choices were going to affect whether this happened or not."

"That's strange. What do you think it means?"

"I have no idea, but I can stay up and keep guard if you want."

"Are you sure you can?"

"Yes, I pulled plenty of all-nighters when I was dungeon crawling with Midna."

"I don't blame you for that, but thank you Link. You really are something else."

"What's that supposed to mean?"

"I mean that you stick your neck out for other people before you consider your own safety."

"Thank you, I guess. But don'tworry, I know what I'm doing."

Zelda nodded, and Link returned to his room. Zelda agreed with his actions, and reitred to her room as well.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"How much longer until it arrives?" asked a man.

"Not long now," said another man. "I'd say about midnight is when it arrives."

"Perfect," said the first man. "This is our present to you, Your Majesty." He said the last two words with disgust, then snickered.

Re: The Call of the Hero

What is this? Another chapter update so soon?

Chapter 9

Evening came. Link was about toleave his room, when he remembered that he was going to show Zelda the letter. He quickly grabbed it from the drawer, and left the room. He made his way to Zelda's room, and saw that she was waiting for him.

"You didn't have to wait for me," Link said.

"It's no big deal," Zelda said. "When I was younger, this castle would creep me out; and I would stay up late into the night."

"I can see how the last design would scare you," Link said as he remembered how empty the castle seemed when he entered it to face Ganondorf.

"Yes, it wasn't the best place to be alone in."

"Yeah. By the way, I found an old letter in one of the drawers in my room. Do you think you can read it?"

"I can try, but if it is too worn, I may not be able to."

Link handed Zelda the letter, and she looked at it.

"This is in a language I have never seen before, yet it seems recognizable," Zelda said, puzzled.

"I had the same feeling," Link said. "It's like I've seen it, but I only know Hylian."

"I'll take a look at it in the morning," Zelda said. "Right now, I'm tired and need some sleep."

Link nodded to show that he understood, and Zelda reitred to her room.

Link sat down with his back against the door, and waited. He didn't know what he was waiting for, but he felt as though something was going to happen.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"It has arrived," said a man.

"Have it make a little noise," the other man said. "We want them to know that something's happening."

The first man nodded, and turned back to the crystal ball the two were standing next to.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Link began to doze off when he heard a loud clank from below. He got up, and went to the balcony's edge. The castle was pitch black except for a faint glow at the far end of the hall below. He almost went to investigate, when he decided to wake Zelda instead. She got out of bed, and sluggishly followed Link. Zelda had grabbed her bow from under her bed, and put on her quiver.

The two of them made their way to where the light was coming from, and saw that the light to a giant room was on. Another clank sounded, and the two headed in the direction of the noise. What they found surprised them. A room that was full of golden treasures and strange looking artifacts was open.

"This is one of the vaults that we have," Zelda said. "How did it get opened?"

"I have no idea," Link said. "But let's try to get it closed."

The two grabbed the giant door, and pulled.

Link suddenly felt something, and drew the Master Sword. He swiped at the air behind him, hitting air. However, he could tell that something was behind him. He motioned Zelda to stop, and she did.

Link turned around, and saw that a human was standing in the middle of the room. However, it wasn't a human. The creature looked human, but its skin was pale white, and it had no eyes. It had frayed, black hair, and its veins were showing at an alarming rate.

The creature screeched, and charged at Link. He quickly reacted by swinging his sword at the creature, but the creature backed away. It then charged Link again, and this time Link charged back.

Link couldn't get to the creature, it was so fast. Instead, it managed to circle around behind him, and kicked him in the back. He fell forward, and quickly rolled out of the way of another kick. This time the kick left a small dent in the floor.

Holy cow! That was almost me! Link thought.

Meanwhile. Zelda was making her way to the balcony above so that she could get a clean shot at the creature. She knew that being above it would give her the advantage, but it was so quick that Zelda was unsure if she could hit it.

The creature noticed that the way to the vault was clear, and made its way for it. The creature was almost in when it stopped. An arrow whistled by in front of it, and it hissed. Zelda quickly hid below the balcony railing, she didn't want the creature to come after her as she was still not fully awake.

The creature returned its attention to the vault, and entered it. It suddenly laughed a disturbing laugh. It was one of triumph, but it sounded horrifying.

Link was down the entire time due to being winded, and he managed to get up when he saw the creature leave the vault.

The creature had a smooth, blue rock in its hand, and Link immediately made it his task to get it from the creature. The creature had other plans for the rock, and threw it over Link's head. The rock was at least twenty feet in the air above them, about the same height as Zelda was.

Suddenly, a blue, circular flame appeared against the wall opposite Zelda, and the rock slowly drifted towards it.

Link knew that he couldn't get the rock, but he could still get rid of the creature. He charged the creature again, and the creature waited for him. He swung with the Master Sword, but the creature caught it. It used its free arm to punch him repeatedly. Link became severely winded, and his grip on the Master Sword loosened. The creature punched him one more time, and this time he was sent backwards. The creature then pounced on Link, and punched him several times over and over.

Meanwhile, Zelda was preparing a spell to retrieve the rock back. She had completed the primary incantation, and all that was left was to say the spell. She stood up, and held out one of her hands and said, "Acquarus!"

The rock suddenly stopped moving, and wiggled back and forth between a small area. It was almost as if it didn't know where to go.

The creature heard Zelda's voice, and looked up. It saw the rock slowly moving back and forth between small area. The creature ran up one of the pillars in the corners of the room, and jumped off it. Much to Zelda's surprise, the creature managed to pass by the rock, and smacked it towards the blue flame. This caused the flame's force to overpower Zelda's, and the rock was sucked into the flame. The creature made its way to the flame, and turned to Zelda.

"The circle..." it said. "The circle... above... return... new world... you... no more..." The creature then jumped into the flame, and it disappeared.

Zelda made her way back down to where Link was, and saw that he was getting up.

"Are you hurt?" she asked.

"Don't worry," Link said. "I'll be fine. I had worse beatings than that before. I guess its been so long since I did anything like that, I wasn't ready for the strength of its hits."

"Are you sure you'll be fine?" Zelda asked. A look of concern passed when Link tried to get up, but couldn't due to the pain.

"Yeah, I just need a few minutes to get my strength back."

Zelda let Link lay back down, and he grimaced. He had never taken such a beating in his life, and he lied to Zelda so that he wouldn't worry her. He then closed his eyes, and tried to will the pain away, and somehow it did.

Link opened his eyes, and saw that Zelda was sitting over him. Her hands were glowing a golden color, and a concentrated look was on her face. When the glow faded, Link felt rejuvenated.

"What did you do?" Link asked.

"A simple healing spell," Zelda said. "It allows me to rid the pain for a short time, but it will return, just not as badly."

"Thank you," Link said. "Now, how about we close the vault?"

Zelda nodded, and the two shut the vault. Zelda then proceeded to lock it.

"Out of all the things in there," Link began. "Why did it take a blue rock?"

"I have no idea," Zelda said. She yawned, and stretched her arms.

Link agreed with her, they both could use some rest.

"I think you need to sleep," Link said.

"Your right," Zelda said. "The magic i cast took a toll on me, I'm exhausted."

The two of them went back to Zelda's room, and he made sure that nothing was in there. After a thorough check, Zelda entered, and went to bed.

Link took his position outside of Zelda's room. He tried to stay awake, but fell asleep soon thereafter.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A blue rock popped out of a flame in the middle of a room.

A man picked up the rock, and said, "Men, step one is complete."

Re: The Call of the Hero

Chapter 10

Link awoke. He remembered the events of last night so well. Some strange creature had infiltrated the castle, and stole something from the safe. The stolen object happened to be a blue rock, but he had no idea what the importance of it was.

It suddenly dawned upon Link that he was back in his room. He quickly got out of his bed, and winced in pain. The fight from last night had taken its toll on Link. He managed to fight through the pain, and left his room. He immediately went to Zelda's room, and saw that there were two guards standing outside her room.

"All guests were supposed to leave last night," said one of the guards as Link approached them.

"I have my reasons for staying," Link said. "May I see the prin- queen?"

"And what matters do you have with Her Majesty?" asked the other guard.

"Can't you just let me through?"

"No, we have a job to do..." the first guard siad, but then saw the Master Sword. "Is that the Master Sword?"

"Yeah, why?"

"You must be the legendary hero Her Majesty has told us about. I'll tell you where the queen is. She is in the library."

"And that is where?"

"Go to the end of that hall," the guard said as he pointed down one of the halls. "Take a right, and its the set of double doors about halfway down the hall."

"Thanks." Link said as he ran off in the direction the guard was pointing. He came across the set of double doors, and entered the room.

Link didn't have to search long to find Zelda. She was sitting at one of the tables, and had several stacks of books around her.

"How long have you been here?" Link asked as he approached Zelda.

"I've been here since about sunrise," Zelda said, not looking up from her book.

"What time is it now?" Link asked.

"It's about midday."

"Midday?!"

"Yes, it seemed as though you were exhausted after that fight. I, however, couldn't get as much sleep as I needed. If you're wondering what I mean, I mean that I have to find out what this creature took and why."

"Is there anyway that I can help?"

"Yes, I have a task for you, and I know you are the only one capable of doing it."

"What is it?"

"I want you to visit the Sages, and see if you can get any information from them about what happened last night."

Link nodded, he was finally going on an adventure again. "I'm going to head out tomorrow."

Zelda nodded her head in approval.

"Oh, by the way, do you know how to ride a horse?"

"Why do you ask?"

"I'm taking Epona to the lake, and I need someone to take her back to the castle."

"If Epona is willing to let me, I'll return her to the castle."

"Thank you." Link said, and bowed before he left.

Link returned to his room, and packed up all his stuff. He made sure that he had enough food to last the trek through the desert and the journey through Arbiter's Ground. He also checked up on his weapons. His bow and quiver was still in his room.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The next day, Link and Zelda left Castle Town on Epona. Epona had no trouble getting the two of them to Lake Hylia, and had equally as little trouble with Zelda taking her back.

Link watched as the two girls left him. When they were out of sight, he focused his attention on the house situated at the center of the lake. The house had a cannon sticking out of the roof, and he remembered the last time he had to use it. Link shook the memories from his head, and proceeded towards the house.

When he arrived at the house, he saw Fyer. Fyer was a short, bigger man who wore clown makeup and a clown outfit. While disturbing at first, he was a for- the- customer type of guy, and wanted to see the customer happy.

"Ah, Link," Fyer said. "Come to play more of our fun games?"

"No," Link said. "I'm here because I need to get to the desert, and you're the only who can help me."

"The desert, eh?" Fyer asked.

"Yes," Link said.

"That'll be..." Fyer said as he counted on his fingers. "Forty rupees."

"Forty?!" Link said in disbelief. "Fine, here you go."

Link handed the money over to Fyer, and he entered his house. After what sounded to Link like a couple gears rotating, the cannon changed its angle.

Fyer returned and said, "She's all set. Right this way."

Link followed Fyer to where the cannon was. Link unwillingly entered it, and the door shut behind him. Another door shut, and Link prepared himself for the launch.

Link noticed the end of the cannon got slightly farther way, and then the platform below him catapulted him high into the air. He flew high over Falbi's house, and over the rock formation that separated the desert from the kingdom.

Link's landing in the desert was anything but pretty. He had fallen head first toward the sand, and ended up with a mouthful of it. He shook the sand out of his hand, and spat the sand out of his mouth.

Link stood up, and spotted his destination. He knew that it would take at least a week to arrive at the Sage's Circle, and he didn't want to waste any time getting there.

The sand beneath Link shifted, and he quickly moved. Something was beneath him, and he knew exactly what it was: a desert worm. Link kept moving, and found a patch where no sand was. He quickly got on it, and the creature left him. He remembered that they were sensitive to the oressure put on them, and would rise from below to attack the unexpected.

Link made sure that he worked his way through the desert carefully, and would rest on any rocky patch he came to. He figured that at the rate he was going, he would be at the entrance to Arbiter's Ground by midday the next day.

As night fell around him, he set up a small camp. There, he ate his journeyman's meal of goat meat. As much as he liked goat, he was already getting tired of it. After his meal was over, Link took off the Hero's Clothes and used them as a blanket for the night with his pack acting as a pillow.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Meanwhile in Hyrule Castle, Zelda was also getting some much needed rest. She had spent the better part of the past two days searching the library to find answers.

Zelda's dream had started off quite fine. She was directing her guards around, but something felt oddly familiar.

She would soon find out as a knight came flying into the throne room. The knight landed with a thud, and was motionless.

Zelda got up to try and see if he was alive, but her two guards beside her didn't allow her to. The other guards in the room drew their swords, and prepared to attack whatever was coming through the doors.

Suddenly, several black blurs came through the door, and moved straight for the guards in the room. The blurs turned out to be demonic creatures from another world, and they were impervious to the guards' swords.

One of the guards was thrown against the wall, and he fell in a crumpled heap. Another was piledriven into the ground, and the rest of his body fell over like a statue. Other guards met with the same fate as these two had.

More were going to be killed until a voice sounded in the hall.

"Stop!" it said, and another being entered the room. This one was wearing a mask, and had more of those shadow creatures following him.

"You really thought you could escape from me?" the man asked.

"Who said I was running?" Zelda asked, unable to keep the fear out of her voice.

"Hiding like a coward, then?" the man asked. "Well, I have a proposition for you: give me your kingdom, and I'll spare the rest of those fools."

"And why would I do something like that?" Zelda retorted.

"You're in no place to not accept this deal," said the masked man, and he elaborated when he saw Zelda's confused face. "You see, I already have control over most of this kingdom right now. If you looked outside the past few days, you would notice this. You're surrounded. Give in, and I will hold my end of the deal."

Zelda's grip on her sword tightened, she had a difficult decision to make.

The masked man noticed Zelda's indecisiveness, and snapped his fingers. Two of the shadow beasts ran for her, but the two guards readied themselves. The shadow creatures each grabbed one, and vaulted it over themselves to the middle of the room. They pounced on the guards, and repeatedly pounded on them.

"If you wish for this to happen no more, agree to our deal," the masked man said.

Zelda's grip on her sword was so tight that her knuckles turned white. She was trying to figure out what to do.

Again, seeing Zelda's indecisiveness, the masked man snapped his fingers. "Finish them," he said.

The shadow creature raised its hand high into the air, and brought it down on the guard's face. A pool of blood slowly formed around him, and another one formed around the other guard.

Zelda couldn't take it anymore, she had to make a decision.

With much regret, Zelda dropped her sword. By doing so, she had also surrendered her kingdom tothis madman.

"A wise decision," the masked man said, and he left the throne room as if nothing had happened.

However, before he was completely gone Zelda called out to him, "You won't get away with this! Whoever you are, I can promise you this; there is always a light in the darkness, and that light shall burn strong so long as there is still hope in this country."

"Hmph," the masked man snorted. "I'd like to see how long that hope lasts. And, for future reference, my name is Zant, king of the Twili." Zant continued his exit of the building, and the shadow creatures followed him.

Zelda's shoulders slumped, and her head was staring at the ground between her feet. She had just given up her kingdom, and for what? She knew that even though the people around her were saved, they were trapped forever as motionless spirits.

Zelda was so deep in thought that she jumped when a hand was placed on her shoulder. She looked at it, and saw a grayish- green hand. Zelda then looked up to see who the hand belonged to.

It was Ganondorf.

Ganondorf's red hair and beard were unmistakeable as well as his skin color. He reached for Zelda's face with his other hand, and laughed as the hand blocked out all light from Zelda's vision.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Zelda awoke, and the laughter echoed in her head. Her Triforce was glowing, and there was a slight burning sensation coming from it. She had no idea what it meant or why it was acting that way.

However, she was not the only one like that as Link's Triforce also glowed and burned. He too was puzzled as to what was happening, but he had a feeling that it wasn't something good.

Re: The Call of the Hero

Chapter 11

Link couldn't sleep for the rest of the night since the Triforce was glowing too brightly. He didn't want to move out in the dark as he could hardly see, and he knew that there was a huge ravine somewhere in the desert.

Link looked to the sky, and tried to see if he could recognize any of the constellations that Ilia taught him. Unfortunately, some clouds obscured the stars enough for him to not be able to recognize any constellations.

Thinking of Ilia made Link homesick, and he felt slightly depressed. He tried not to think too much of home, but he couldn't help it. Before, he had Midna to help keep his mind away fromhome, but now that he was alone, he felt alone.

Link then thought of all the things that he had done with Midna. From fighting a giant dragon in the sky to ridding Hyrule of the twilight. For some reason, Link had wanted to see Midna again, but he never went through with the idea. However, he had the feeling that they would meet again.

All those thoughts made the time pass by for Link, and the sun rose in the distant horizon. He packed up his stuff, and proceeded towards the Bulbin camp which was in sight of where he had slept.

When Link arrived at the camp, he noticed that it was just as empty as before, and that it had remained unchanged since he was last through it. Still not wanting to take chances, Link drew his sword, and readied himself for any sort of opposition.

But none came. The entire camp was void of life, and Link was partially thankful for that. He was not in the mood for fighting, and he needed to reach the Sages as soon as he could.

Link finally made his way to the entrance to Arbiter's Grounds. However, something seemed strange, but Link couldn't figure out what. Link stepped into the former prison, but he never entered it.

Instead, he arrived on the other side of the prison, just outside the Sages' Circle. Link looked back, and noticed that there was a strange white light emitting from the entryway that he just appeared from. Link made his way up to the Sages, and waited for them to show up.

It did not take long for the Sages to appear, and when they did, Link was ready to tell them what had happened. Link told the Sages of the intruder and of his and Zelda's dreams.

"A new evil is arising," the Leader Sage said.

"That much I understand," Link said. "But why would they want a blue rock?"

"A blue rock?" asked the Sage. "What did it look like?"

"Well, it had a small protrusion from it," Link said. "But there wasn't much else that I could see."

The Leader Sage looked at the other Sages, and nodded. They nodded in return.

"Link?" asked the Leader Sage. "Do you know of the Hero of Time?"

"Yes," Link said. "He manipulated time in order to defeat Ganondorf, right?"

"True," the Sage said. "He did utilize time to help him, but he did not have control over time. Now, before I tell you how he managed to control time, I have to tell you another story.

"Hundreds of years before the Hero of Time was even born, there existed a land in the sky where the original Hylians resided. This community existed in harmony, but the same could not be said for the surface. One day, the two worlds would meet, and a Hero was sent to save both. During his adventures, he found several stones. Upon further inspection, he realized that these stones could manipulate time, when struck, an area around the stone. He later named them Timeshift Stones, and he continued his research of them. Even after years of studying, he had no idea as to where their power came from. There was no energy within them; and when he broke into them, their power would be released.

"That story will help you understand how the Hero of Time manipulated time. He used a blue ocarina, known as the Ocarina of Time."

"You mean that this enemy has some instrument that can control time?" Link asked.

"Yes," the Sage said.

"What about what the theif said?" Link asked.

"We tried to decpiher what he said, but it was so vague. While we do not know all of what he meant, here is what we do know. There is a land to the north, the land above, that is round in shape, the circle. Go there, and you may find your answers. As for the rest of it, there are too many scenarios for what it meant."

"Do you think that this has something to do with the being in mine and Zelda's dreams?"

"Yes, this being seems to want to make his presence known, and his appearance in your dreams and the Ocarina of Time's theft should not be noted as coincidence."

Link nodded, he knew that there was some sort of connection, but he couldn't figure out what. However, the Sages couldn't either.

"I sense that you have no more questions," the Sage said. "In that case, do you want to return to Hyrule immediately?"

"Yes," Link said.

"Prepare yourself," the Sage said.

Link relaxed all the muscles in his body, and cleared his mind. He felt a strange sensation, but he did not lose focus on what he was doing. Link closed his eyes, and he felt himself being pulled to another place.

When Link opened his eyes, he saw that he was in the fields just outside Castle Town. Link quickly made his way through the town, and into the castle courtyard. From there, he made his way to the library, and found Zelda still looking at books.

Zelda looked up, and saw Link standing before her.

"Link," Zelda said. "Last night I had another dream, only this time it was different. It was the day that Zant took control of Hyrule. That made me want to do other research, and I have found something interesting that you must know."

"I have too," Link responded.

"You first," Zelda said. "Your information will probably be more vital than mine."

"Well..." Link said, and he told Zelda all that he had found out.

"So, my guess is that the enemy wants to use the ocarina to change the past," Link said after he finished his story.

"I have a feeling that is not what they are planning," Zelda said. "But here's what I found.

"The Hero of Time, as it turns out, did not live only a couple hundred years ago. No, he lived over a thousand years ago, and do you know what that means?"

"No," Link said. "What?"

"It means that Ganondorf is over one thousand years old!" Zelda said. "He was in charge of a now extinct race of people. Not only that, but he actually tried to take over Hyrule on more than one occassion. One time, he managed to get his hands on the full Triforce. However, several men locked him away, and he couldn't use his powers on Hyrule. Ganondorf's time with the Triforce allowed him to transform between man and beast at will, and he learned magic that was only written in books. Ganondorf is not who we think he is."

"He can't be over a thousand years old," Link said. "He would have to have some sort of spell that keeps him young. Not only that, but all those wounds that he got from years of failure should have killed him."

"That's where it gets bad," Zelda said. "The stories claim Ganondorf to be an immortal being that remains youthful no matter how much time passes. On the bright side, Ganondorf's appearances were spaced out by at least a hundred years, so we won't have to worry about him. Instead, let's worry about what's happening now."

"Right," Link said. "I will return to Ordon to pick up some essentials, and then make my way for the northern lands."

"I'm coming with you," Zelda said.

"Are you sure?" Link asked. "This is not going to be a simple task, and I don't think your capable of being out in the true wild."

"I believe that I am more than capable of holding my own, thank you, " Zelda said. "Besides, I have a reason for going."

"And what's that?" Link asked.

"While you were in the desert, a strange report has come in from several people," Zelda said. "They claim that people are disappearing. One said that they saw someone get dragged into the ground, but when they dug a hole where they were, there was nothing. I believe this has something to do with this new evil."

"But you still..." Link began, and then he saw Zelda's expresion. "Fine, I'll think about it. That doesn't mean that you are going, but you may want to pack for if I do let you come along."

"I believe that if I go, I'll be doing my country a great service." Zelda said. "Now, who do I leave in charge?"

"I haven't the faintest clue," Link said. "But what I do know is that I need some sleep."

Zelda and Link made their way out of the library, and to Zelda's room. The two exchanged good nights, and made their separate ways to their own beds.

Once again, Link had a hard time sleeping. Everything that he had learned that day, and everything that happened in the past few weeks make him think that what lie ahead was much bigger than he could comprehend.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Men," said a man. "Step Two is complete, and Step Three will begin shortly. Is everything in place?"

Another man simply nodded.

"Good," said the first man. "This will help our young friend reach us sooner than he would expect. Mheheheh..."

Re: The Call of the Hero

Chapter 12

Link awoke the next morning, and quickly ate his breakfast. He said good-bye to Zelda, and went to the stables where Epona was. Link mounted Epona, and rode out of the castle courtyard.

Link guided Epona through the busy streets of Castle Town. He passed by Telma's Bar, and decided to stop there to say hello.

"Link!" said Shad, a scholarly man with glasses. "It is quite good to see you."

"Likewise," Link said.

"What are you doing here anyway hon?" asked Telma, the owner of the bar.

"I just wanted to say hello before I go back home," Link explained as he looked around, then said, "Where's Auru?"

"He's currently trying to find signs of the Oocca," Shad said. "He has agreed to help me with my research, and is looking at the Sky Cannon."

"What is it that you want to know?" Link said.

"I want to know how a civilization can live in the sky," Shad said. "It would be amazing to find their source of existence, and that we could somehow be able to communicate with them. Not only that, but imagine the technology they have up their."

A bell chimed outside, and Link got up. "I really must be going," he said, and left after exchanging good-byes with everyone.

Link rode Epona through the expansive fields of Hyrule, and settled down for a snack just before entering the forest as the sun was setting. Link ate his snack with dissatisfaction as he suddenly missed real food. Not only that, but he also missed food that wasn't over three weeks old.

Link mounted Epona who was nearby eating some grass, and the two went into the forest. The forest was a lot harder to navigate in the dark, but Link had memorized the path so well that it didn't matter to him whether it was light or dark.

As he approached the bridge that connected Ordon with Faron, he smelt something strange. It was too faint for him to recognize, but he hurried home as fast as he could. When they were about to pass the Ordon spring, Epona came to a sudden halt and trotted into the spring. Link tried to guide her out, but she wouldn't budge. It was then that Link realized what the smell was.

It was smoke. Link dismounted his horse, and continued towards Ordon.

When Link rounded the corner near his house, he could see a pillar of smoke coming from the ranch. Link ran into the village, and saw the villagers standing near one another. Bo, Rusl, and Fado were in a stance that seemed as if something were attacking them.

Link quickly got over to them, and asked what had happened.

"Some creatures set the barn on fire," Rusl said. "We decided to get together before anything else happened, and then it became quiet. And now you're here to help us defend our village."

Link nodded, and drew the Master Sword. The loud, metallic ring echoed through the quiet night. Link knew that thanks to his wolf form he was able to hear things well before the others could. Link closed his eyes, told everyone to remain quiet, and strained his ears.

Then, he heard a faint growl, followed by several more.

"I hear something," Link said.

"Where is it coming from?" asked Rusl.

"I don't know," Link said.

Link tried to pinpoint where the growls were coming from, but sounded like they were from all around them. And then it hit him, "They've surrounded us!" Link said.

Link looked up, and sure enough there were Bulbins all around them on the cliffs, and then more screeching sounded as more Bulbins came in from the ranch. Link couldn't believe how many Bulbins there were, there had to be at least a hundred of them. In the end, though, Link didn'tcare how many there were, he wwas going to protect his home.

Bo told Link to take out the ones on the cliff as he, Fado, and Rusl would take care of the ground troops. Link put his Master Sword away, and took out his bow. He latched a couple arrows on the bow, and fired them off. He managed to strike down two of them, and quickly moved to another spot just before a rain of arrows fell upon his previous location.

Meanwhile, the other three were fairing pretty well against the army of Bulbins on the ground. Rusl struck down several of them with his sword, and Fado was using his strength to his advantage. Bo, however, was not doing as well as the other two. He managed to kill a few of the Bulbins, but was quickly getting worn out.

"Father?" Ilia asked as she saw how tired Bo was getting.

"Stay back," Bo said through gritted teeth. "We don't know what these creatures will do."

While those three were taking out the ground troops, Link continued taking out the ones on the cliff, which took hardly anytime for him. He quickly made his way back over to where the others were, and took out the Master Sword once again, this time he was going to use it. Link sliced through several of the Bulbins before reuniting with Bo, Rusl, and Fado. Link noticed that all of the Bulbins were dead, and that no more were coming.

"Looks like we got 'em," Fado said.

Link nodded and Rusl smiled, faintly.

"We should get rid of-" Link began, but was cut off as a pain came across from his arm. Link looked at his arm, and saw a gash on his upper arm. He quickly pulled out a bandage, and wrapped himself up just in time as more Bulbins appeared.

"Oh no, Link!" Ilia said. "Are you alright?"

Ilia fought through the grips of Jaggle and Hanch, and made her way to where Link was. However, she suddenly stopped as she felt the ground shake beneath her.

Something popped out of the ground beneath her, and she screamed. Her scream became muffled as the thing wrapped itself around Ilia, and drug her into the ground.

Link turned around in time to see her being pulled underground, and he tried to reach her. However, he was too late, and Ilia had disappeared.

Bo, too, had seen what happened to Ilia, and roared in anger. He charged towards the Bulbins, and grabbed two of them. He smashed their heads in on each other, and made his way through them. Al the while, he was yelling, "Give me back my daughter, you lowlives!"

Link tried to tell Bo to calm down, but he couldn't get through to him. Then, a whirring noise passed by Link. He knew that it was an arrow, and he wondered why it missed him. But then, he realized that it wasn't aimed for him, however, it was, once again, too late.

Bo was in the process of getting rid of the last of the Bulbins when the arrow struck him square in the back of the head. He fell over, and the two Bulbins were crushed beneath him.

Link stood in disbelief as he couldn't believe what had just happened.

"Bo?" Link asked as he approached the mayor.

But the mayor remained motionless. Link looked around to see where the Bulbin was that killed him, but he didn't see anything. Tears began to run down Link's cheeks as Ilia had been kidnapped and Bo had been killed.

"Link!" Rusl said. "Look out!"

Link looked towards the entrance to Ordon, and saw even more Bulbins approaching. He told everyone to stay together, and get back as he would deal with the Bulbins on his own. Link swiftly sliced his way through the first few Bulbins, and then took a few steps back to give him some room.

He charged at the bulbins again, but this time they got out of his way. The Bulbins proceeded to surround him, but Link quickly spun in a circle with his blade extended all the way. This caused some of the Bulbins to drop, and the others to hesitate. Link took the opportunity, and cut a path through the Bulbins. He was in the open again. Unfortunately, it was not a good thing for him.

Another creature popped out of the ground in fron of him, and took link by surprise. It stabbed him in the chest, and disappeared into the ground. Link noticed that whatever it was that he got stabbed with didn't hurt, so he looked down.

To Link's horror, he saw a Twilight Shard portruding from his chest. The shard sank into his chest, and Link said, under his breath, "Dammit."

Link felt the sensation of being transformed, and also heard the terrified screams of the Ordonians. When the transformation was over, Link had turned into a massive black wolf. Link growled at the Bulbins, and to his surprise they ran away.

"Link?" Rusl asked.

Link quickly turned at Rusl, and growled. Rusl slowly approached Link.

"Be careful," said Rusl's wife.

Rusl nodded, and continued towards Link. Link, meanwhile sat, and tried not to growl.

"Link?" Rusl said, again. "If you are in there, you should probably leave. It's for the best. We don't know what may happen if you stay here. You may become more feral and can't control yourself. Remember, this is for not only the safety of us, but for your own good, too."

Link got up, and looked at Rusl. Rusl bcame frozen at the gaze that Link was giving him, but, to his relief, Link turned around and ran from the village. Link knew where he was going as that was the only way to return to his normal self.

He had to get back to Zelda.
