Why, what do we have here? It's a brand, sparkling new writing contest! Just look at that shine.

'So what's the deal and why should I care?' I hear you ask. Hopefully the start of on-going monthly writing contest, the May Writing Contest is open to anyone. This month we want you to write a short story.
What a brilliant opportunity to flex the imagination and show off your writing to ZU's creative community.

Alright, so what do I have to write?

The theme for this contest is "It's a small world after all". Incorporate this theme into your writing any which way you want to.

And how long should my short story be?

For this contest, write a short story approximately 1,500 words long. It's okay if it's a bit under or a bit over, say between 1,400 and 1,600, but that's the general length we're after.

And what do I do with my story I've written that's relevant to the theme and of the appropriate length?

PM your entry to either myself or to Holly. Then when time's up for the contest, we will post all the stories in a Voting thread anonymously.

Oh, right, deadline, when's that?

Two weeks from now. Midnight 29th May Australian Eastern Standard Time.

You do realize May is almost halfway over already? You should probably post these near the beginning of the month to give people more time. Just saying...

^Regardless of when he posts it, the time limit is still gonna be the same; two weeks. It's working with the same limits as the art contests. There's two weeks to write and about a week to vote, I think.

He actually did state what it was, but there it is again for your reference. :>

Question, d00d: what if someone is silly enough to go waaaay over the limit? Will you be like "lol GTFO bish *ignores entry*" or ask them to cut it down (if there's time to do so)??

We would ask them to rework it and cut it down. However, if the deadline passes and it hasn't been resubmitted, then it's disqualified.

I wish these contest allowed more time or at least let us know the theme earlier...

A: You're clearly not as literate as you believe. That was a complete sentence.
B: It was an answer. The rules are: write a story; incorporate the theme into the story. All the restrictions are stated in the OP.

^Those. No matter when he announces it, the time limit is still the same. If he had annoucned it at the start of May, it would STILL be two weeks for you to think of something to write. If you're asking for more than two weeks to write something, it's deliberately kept to a short time span so people don't lose interest or forget it's running (which has happened in other comps that have gone on for a month). Also, that's also why it's kept relatively short with 1500ish words.

What's so hard about making a 1,500 word short story in two weeks? Granted it'll take a few days to get the idea you want and how you write it, and though there is the writers block syndrome that some of us are hit with, but I can see that two weeks is a reasonable amount of time.

Unless you're lazy. Which I am, so it would take me about a week to write a short story, unless I'm in one of those rare moods to write - which I am! Oh yay!

I'll try to stir something up for this Contest.

I understand now, but I believe the problem with the previous writing (and art) contest, was that not many people took notice of it and actually submitted it. A full month would be fine, even one week more would be sufficient time. (I am lazy and sort of busy with finals.)

Meh. Whatever. I'm not entering anymore. Maybe next time, I have finals to study for.

Well, your interest is appreciated anyway. Perhaps we might be able to see your works in the next possible contest?

I might jump in... Really it depends whether or not a can write a story that short. <.<

The chapters I write for my own stories are typically close to 1,500 words in length, so it shouldn't be too difficult, really. Maybe just write a fluffly oneshot?

Yes, of course. Summer's coming up soon.

I've got my story finished time to summit. I didn't even have a good idea until about 5 hours before I finished it .
