[NaNoWriMo] Mountain Passport

This not for any official NaNoWriMo stuff. I'm doing this mainly to see if I can do it.

Prologue

"I've climbed many mountains, but this one is too much!"
"Don't say that! You should never give up!"
"Don't give me that! You know that sometimes giving up is the key!"
"You may say that, but you don't mean it!"
"Oh! You mean like I said I'd kill your sister!"
"I thought you said never bring that up again!"
"Very funny! I killed her because..."
"You don't know why, do you? You just killed her because you hated her!'
"But isn't that why?"
"...You know? This mountain brings out the worst in you!'
"What makes you say that?"
"You used to be so kind!"
"Kind! Ha! You don't know the meaning of the word! You thought I was kind? I just used you!"
"But you saved me!"
"Just to get here!"
"You are a horrible liar!"
"Am I? I killed her! And you know what? I'll kill you!"
"How?"
"I'll push you off that edge!"
"No you won't!"
"Watch me! I'm much stronger than you are old man!"
"Don't do it! Stop! Please!"
"I'll kill you! I'm a man of my word!"
"You're not! You said you would keep..."
"Now you lie! I did not say that and you know it! Goodbye, Jason...old friend!"
"Stoooop!!!"

He pushed me right off the edge and that is how it all started...

Lesson 1: How to Make a Fire

Relatively painless... Wait! Relatively painless? Snow!! How is there snow? Isn't it summer? I wonder what happened to Kevin? Why did he do it? Why Kevin...? First things first! I'd better make a fire. First I need wood... in a snowy area... I'd better get going...

Later...

I seem to have run into a forest. The leaves here are yellow,... orange... red... green...? What? Where's the snow? Anyway, I'd better get some twigs and branches. This reminds me oh so well of the time we went hiking on Mt. Everest...

"Did you bring any wood?"
"Of course Kevin! I always bring wood."
"Good! I'll start a fire..."
"How? We're too high up!"
"And..."
"The higher we go up, the less oxygen there is!"
"And..."
"Without oxygen, the fire will go out!!!"
"And..."
"That's it."
"Good. Go get your sister."
"Do you know where she is?"
"Yeah. I left her at the Frozen River."
"You left her!"
"She wanted to stay behind for a while."
"Left her there!"
"Jason! Go get your sister!"
"Right..."

At Frozen River...

"Sis! Sis!"
"Over here Jason! And call me by my name, Jenny!"
"Alright Jenny, Kevin wants you to come with me back to our camp."
"What for?"
"The idiot is trying to make a fire."
"In the snow?"
"Yes."
"With little oxygen?"
"Yes."
"Even though it is chemically--"
"Yes."
"He really is stupid."
"I tried to tell him why he can't but he is--"
"Too stubborn?"
"Yup! You know him well."
"That's why I love him."
"You told me that already."
"Yet you always forget."
"I haven't forgotten the--"
"Rumor?"
"I was going to say that he needed you at camp, but now that you brought it up--"
"What are we waiting for?"
"--he is a little strange. What did you say?"
"Let's go!"
"That's my arm! I use that to chop wood and climb and stuff!"
"Shut up big bro!"
"My name is Jason, sis!'
"And my name is Jenny, so shut up!"

At camp...

"I brought Jenny!"
"Okay! Now about that fire..."
"You finally realize it won't light!!!"
"No. We need rocks. Jason, gather some snow!"
"I thought we need rocks."
"Get snow! Let me spell that S...N...O...W... snow!"
"Jenny! You have to revoke--"
"Listen to him! Snow!"
"Fine..."

A minute later...

"I got the sn-- You made fire!"
"Yup! You took too long so we made a fire with some twigs and the snow here!"
"Bro... you can't do anything simple can you."
"How did you make that fire with snow and wood?"
"Jason... you are an idiot aren't you?"

We had a great big laugh after that. At least now I know how to make that fire with twigs and some snow. I'd better find some more twigs to keep the fire going...

Lesson 2: How to Make a Tent and a Bed

Good. The fire is going. The warmth I haven't felt for so long. Nice. I wonder why we even came to this mountain. What was the purpose of all this... this madness? Well, I'd better find some stuff to sleep in. I don't want to be exposed to the cold too much. Maybe someone will find me...

Later...

This forest is really scaring me! Weren't there leaves on those trees this morning? It must be a trick of the night. Oh! Here are the leaves! They've all fallen... Wait! Is that even possible? Anyway, I'd better pick up these leaves. Now that I think of it...

"What mountain are we climbing now?"
"That one."
"You mean..."
"Yup."
"Kevin, are you mad?"
"No. Sad, yes."
"Still upset that Jenny died."
"Yeah. I can't believe there was a murderer on that mountain."
"Yeah... Sis wouldn't want us to stop this, would she?"
"Nope."
"But she wouldn't want us to climb that mountain!!"
"But she would want us to keep adventuring until we can't adventure anymore."
"...Okay. You convinced me."

He just... I don't believe it. He suckered me into leading him here! Maybe I am an idiot... No! Without me, he'd have died in the Rocky Mountains...

"Jason! I can't go on!"
"Kevin, wake up! You're just sitting on a rock."
"Yeah, but the thirst... It's going to kill me."
"What thirst?"
"What do you mean?"
"You're in a river!"
"Oh... yeah! I knew that!"
"Jason! Kevin! Time for dinner!"
"Coming sis!"
"My name is Jenny!"

After near death and dinner...

"I just realized something."
"What Kevin?"
"We have nowhere to sleep."
"So?"
"We'll freeze."
"Kevin has a point Jenny."
"We're close to California. How can we freeze?"
"You forget that it is still winter and these mountains can kill someone at night."
"So Jason... You make the plans. What do we do?"
"We make a tent."
"How? We only have a couple of hours until nightfall."
"And thirty minutes till snowfall."
"How do you do that?"
"Elementary my dear Jenny."
"Yeah. Elementary sis."
"What did you say?"
"I meant Jenny!"
"Better... but how do we keep ourselves from freezing."
"I already have some tents and beds set up."
"Bro! You mean an actual canvas tent and sleeping bags?"
"No sis. I mean a tent of leaves and a king sized bed made of leaves and branches for each of us."
"There's your sarcasm."
"Jenny! I'm not lying! Close your mouth Kevin!"
"Jenny... he's not lying..."
"Okay Kevin."
"Why do you always agree with him?"
"Because I looooove him!"
"I should have guessed."
"How about we settle in for the night Jason?"
"Sure, why not?"
"I got a tent with Kevin!"
"Hold it Jenny! You have your own tent."
"Why do you have to come up with everything?"
"Because if I don't, you'll be dead sis."
"Watch what you say Jason or you'll be dead."
"Come back here bro!"
"No! Not the face!"

That was a painful night. Why Kevin? Why kill your love? Why try and kill me? What ever happened to the good times? Why is it so cold all of a sudden? Who are you? What are you holding? Ow! ......

Lesson 3: How to Not Get Eaten by a Bear

I feel like I was just thrown off a cliff... I already was. Where am I? This is some cave-like place. A fire, bed, a radio... radio! I can maybe call for help! Let's see. Connect the blue wire to the green one and the red to the blue and the green to the red! Wait! Who are you?

"My name is Joe."
"Hey Joe! My name is--"
"Dinner!"
"Actually, it's Jason."
"No you're dinner!"
"You know a person is not allowed to eat another! Very funny!"
"I am no human!"

Oh my! He's not human! He looks like a bear! Wait one second there!

"How come you can talk?"
"I learned how."

Seems bears aren't dumb animals after all... He looks like a grizzly bear. All brown with claws and the like. Reminds me of the time sis got taken by one of those on Mt. Manadnock, except it didn't talk...

"Jason! How are we going to get Jenny back?"
"Don't know."
"Are we going to go after it?"
"No."
"Call for help."
"No."
"Wait here and do nothing."
"No."
"Them what do we do?"
"How about you let me think!"
"Okay... So what's your plan?"
"I'll use you as a boat!"
"Don't look at me like that Jason. Must run..."
"Fell for it!"
"I did not!"
"Get a couple of branches."
"Why?"
"To save sis."

At the bear's cave...

"Prepare yourself Kevin."
"Okay. What should I do?"
"Get ready to light a fire on those branches."
"Alright. I'm ready."
"If I don't make it out alive, tell Jenny it was nice to be her bro."
"You're not going in, are you?"
"No way! Stand back."
"Jason! Don't do it!"
"Hi sis!"
"What did you say?"
"Oh no! Light the branches!"
"Got it."
"Come back here bro!"
"Not my foot! I need that to walk and stuff."
"You'll be dead for calling me that!"
"I'm sorry! Kevin! Throw the fire into the cave! Jenny! We need to get out of here!"
"Why?"
"If we don't, we'll be burned alive!"
"Kevin! Let's go!"
"Okay Jenny!"

After running and near death situations...

"Sorry Jenny. Jason needed to say that."
"Did you Jason? Did you need to?"
"Should I be truthful Kevin?"
"Jason, you'd better be truthful. My fiancee here will eat you alive."
"I have to go get water! ... Run away!"
"Get back here big bro! I need your other foot!"
"I need it to run from you!'

It seems I can't burn him. How about I...

"Joe! How about I make a trade?"
"I don't like to..."
"I'll trade you this pack of food for my freedom."
"Deal!"

That was easy. Now, I'd better find my tent and get some shuteye.

Thanks. I just pulled out my school's Mountain Passport. It was meant for an activity in which the prize was this really good jacket and it involves the mountain next to the school.

Lesson 4: How to Navigate Through the Dark

That bear is really weird. Is it that late already? That reminds me of that night on Mt. Vesuvius...

"What time is it?"
"Midinight."
"Midnight! Jason wake up!'
"Not now sis. I'm sleeping."
"Did you just call me sis?"
"Don't hurt me!"
"Jenny! This isn't the time!"
"Right Kevin!"
"Why did you stop when he said something?"
"Because I--"
"You love him right?'
"Of course!"
"Guys! Vesuvius is going to blow!"
"How?"
"Don't know. It's just a hunch, but they've--"
"Never been wrong?"
"Right Jason. Jenny! Pack up! It'll erupt in an hour!"
"An hour?"
"Yes. Hurry up Jenny!"

Ten minutes later...

"Are you ready?"
"Yup. What about you?"
'Yeah. Where's sis?"
"Bro! I'd kill you if we didn't have to run!"
"Do you have a flashlight?"
"I thought Kevin had it."
"I threw it into a red lake."
"You made the volcano active!"
"I guess..."
"So we have to go down a path in the dark?"
"A steep path. It's the fastest way down."
"Why do you have to come up with everything?"
"Because--"
"There's no time!"
"Right. Kevin, you go down first. Jenny! Follow up from him. I'll be last."
"Why am I second?"
"Do you want to fall and die or become charcoal?"

15 minutes later...

"What do you mean we're trapped?"
"It's almost like someone took the stones we needed to get down."
"Bro. I'm scared."
"I know sis... I know."
"Jenny...Jason... I have an idea."
"Spill it!"
"Jason has to fall."
"My bro is not going to f--"
"Okay."
"Jason! No!"
"Don't worry sis. I trust Kevin."
"Jason!"

I'm finally at camp. It's time to hit the hay. I wonder what Kevin is doing...

"Jenny! Hang on to my arm."
"Okay."
"Almost there."
"I hope this works."
"You hope?"
"Got it! What's that rumbling?"
"Jason!"

No! Just a nightmare. That is not going to help me sleep. It's 12:25 now. I've got to get some sleep!...

"Aaaaah!"
"Kevin!"
"Yeah?"
"You're a genius!"
"I know."
"If you weren't my fiancee, I'd pummel you!"
"How much longer are we going to stay on this rock?"
"Oh no!"
"What, my fiancee?"
"The rock is cracking Jason!'
"Kevin! You idiot!"
"You forgot that no rock can survive excess weight and collisions!"

'This can't get any worse, bro!"
"Jenny... sis... it just did."
"How?"
"Cliff!"
"Jump and catch something."

"Do it sis!"

"We're at ground level."

"Looks like we made it."
"Yeah. We made it sweetie."
"Why did you listen to me and fall short, but listen to her and overdo it?"

Eruption! Huh? Stupid alarm! Now, I'd better find Kevin.

I hate this part of camping out! Picking up stuff. Leaving the good air for bad air. Work! Yes, I mean work! Getting rid of a fire and carrying heavy loads down a mountain. However, I'm going up the mountain with this heavy load. Kevin never had to do this part of camping. He was always going ahead. Wonder what he's doing? ... And it's my job to figure out what. Good thing I took Joe's radio. I wonder if he noticed. Wait. Why would a bear have a radio? This mountain is really weird, but I'm not getting off this mountain without Kevin. He may say we're enemies, but I say we are still friends! Reminds me of the first time we met...

"Who are you?"
"I'm Kevin. You?"
"Jason. Want to climb the Alps?"
"Sure."
"I'll bring my sister along too. Her name is Jenny."
"Cool... Is she hot?"
"Not my choice."

At the house...

"Sis!"
"Jason! Your sister doesn't like it when you call her that!"
"Sorry. Jenny! The hike is still on."
"It is!"
"Yup. This guy named Kevin wanted to climb the Alps with us. Think of it as a late birthday present."
"Is he hot?"
"He asked that about you. Again, not my choice."
"Okay. I'll pack up."
"We don't leave until tomorrow!"
"So? No harm in being early."

At the airport...

"Where's Kevin? He's late."
"Here I am Jason!"
"What kept ya?"
"Packing. I really hate packing up from home. The familiar scent. The good atmosphere. Going away from a place you know so well. Spending an uncomfortable night on-- She's hot!"
"This is--"
"I'm able to talk bro! I'm Jenny. You look nice yourself."
"Sis, spill the pleasantries!"
"You'll die here!"
"You can't kill me in an airport!"
"Since we're spilling pleasantries--"
"Want the truth Kevin?"
"Sure. Why not?"
"You're nice yourself."

Aside from Jenny...

"Is she always like this?"
"Yup."
"Is it always like this?"
"Yup."
"Can you only say 'yup'?"
"Yup."

On the plane...

"Tell me about yourselves."
"We like to climb mountains."
"You do?"
"Yup. That's what we do."
"How long until we reach the Alps?"
"Many hours."
"I'd better go use the bathroom. Jenny. Get to know Kevin a little better."
"Okay."

Three minutes later...

"Airplane bathrooms have a long line. The bathrooms are also trash. Now, I've talked to the captain and-- What in the world are you doing?!!!!!"

At the base of the Alps...

"Kissing. This is the hundredth time I've told you."
"Right. Right. What were you--"
"Please! Could you stop asking?"
"Sorry! I'm looking out for my sis!"
"That reminds me!"
"No! Not my hand! I need it to call for help!"

At camp...

"What's wrong Jenny?"
"I can't help but think I forgot something..."
"It's probably nothing."
"Yeah Jenny. It's time for bed."
"Kevin... I had a great time."
"This trip is just the beginning."

Yeah. He was right. The beginning of many trips and adventures. Now I can't help but feel I've forgotten something... The radio!!
