VCR User Manual: No one reads these damn things!

Heya everyone!

This is the VCR the new role-playing board of Zelda Universe. Many of you may be asking why we’re opening this board up for role-playing when we already have the Battle Arena. The answer is fairly simple: the Battle Arena is a fairly serious and regulated area of role-playing, with a strong focus on character-based roleplaying. We intend for this board to be light-hearted and fun, with a focus on setting-based roleplaying.

The premise is simple: Anyone can set up a role-play in whatever fashion or universe they wish. If you want a Naruto-based role-play have one! While we encourage you to create unique characters, you’re by no means forced to. Moderators are around purely to offer technical support and to prevent any negativity from occurring. Everything else is handled by the creator/leader of a thread/role-play. Any issues that cannot be resolved by them will be reported to the mods and we’ll handle the rest.

Our intention with this manual (other than comedic effect) is to establish simple guidelines for the board, give advice on the creation of a roleplay and to layout templates which are OPTIONAL and are provided for your convenience. If you wish for greater detail within your profiles, feel free to create your own profile template for use in your roleplay.

If you find yourself enjoying roleplaying and want to engage in heavier character-focused roleplaying, as opposed to our setting-based roleplaying, we recommend you check out our sister board the Battle Arena.

The mods of the VCR are:
Ruki
Shrub
Sabbo
insaney

If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to shoot one of us a PM or VM.

Re: VCR User Manual: No one reads these damn things!

Guidelines

We’re not going to force a whole bunch of rules on you. Just use proper spelling and make an attempt at proper grammar and don’t be a dick. Otherwise as long as what you’re doing is within the already stated forum rules then you’re fine! In other words, you cannot have explicit sexual role-plays or anything else which violates Zelda Universe rules.

Moderators wish to have their presence within the board as unobtrusive as possible; our hope is that they will fill a technical role with responsibility for maintaining roleplays and keeping things running smoothly being in the hands of the creators of the roleplays.

Do not take this privilege for granted. This does not entitle you to be tyrannical nor does it mean you’re always correct. Mods will act as mediators when necessary but if they’re required to intervene too often, you will lose the privilege to create and maintain roleplays.

One of the most important things about roleplays is respect. Each player character belongs to someone. This person had their behavior and personality in mind when creating them, so they know their character better than you. Don't use their character when making your post unless you have their permission.

On a final note: while this board is lenient, it would be much appreciated if you made sure to beef up your posts, and not simply spam a roleplay up with one liners. Try to shoot for at least one paragraph per post.

Re: VCR User Manual: No one reads these damn things!

Making a Roleplay

The most important part of creating a roleplay is establishing a premise. This can be original (such as a highschool for gay elves) or can be rooted in an already established universe (such as Star Wars) but the important part is you clearly establish the reason for the roleplay. Are your heroes off to drop a mystical item of vast power into a destructive abyss? Perhaps they’re plotting a rebellion against a tyrant in order to steal his riches? Why? How?

Try to think through enough of the plot that you have an idea of some clear goals and rewards but leave it open enough that others can participate and perhaps find different ways to accomplish these goals. That’s the fun about roleplaying; the random events that simple interaction brings

Your original post should also include a note on quality. If you want a laid back and casual roleplay, make a note of it. If you prefer having a roleplay that is heavier in content and more serious, be sure to make that clear.

We recommend that you have one thread to have all the roleplaying in, while having a second for discussion about the game and plot. Any out of character discussion can also happen privately or in The Green Room. You should also include in the opening post of your RP links to other characters and important information, so they're easier to find.

Re: VCR User Manual: No one reads these damn things!

Template for Characters
The most important part of roleplaying is the characters! We’ve created this easy to use template (with a quick copypasta version at the bottom) that roleplay creators can use to run their roleplays. Please note that this isn't mandatory and you're more than welcome to change it up, add, or remove sections to suit your RP.

Name: The name your character goes by. Feel free to include the character’s full name as well as any nicknames or titles they may have. You may wish to speak about the significance of these names or titles.

Age: How old is your character?

Gender: Male or female?

Appearance: Please be as descriptive as you can in this area. List skin colour, weight and height. The colour and length of their hair, the colour of their eyes. Do they have freckles? Put any descriptive information here. Maybe the shape of their eyes or their body type or their earrings. Do they have scars or birthmarks? Maybe they just have a very friendly face or maybe they look guilty all the time. What kind of clothing do they wear? Do they carry weapons or armour?

Feel free to link a picture!

Specialty: Everyone excels at something, what is the one thing your character can be relied on for? Maybe they’re an exceptional manipulator or maybe the best swordsman around.

Abilities: What are your character's strengths? Are they a good fighter or runner? Do they have magic of some sort? What kind of skills do they have? Maybe they are a top swimmer, can remember names very well, or are a great cook!

Inabilities: What CAN’T your character do? They may have a problem looking at others eyes, or they may kill every plant they touch. Maybe they can’t fight, or they’ve poor balance. Maybe every spell they use turns people’s hair green!

Personality: This should be one of the longer sections that you fill out. Every bit of information that your character has out in the open, or maybe doesn't realize that they have, should be presented here. Your character may feel very social but actually fears being alone. They could love to curl up in front of the TV and watch soap operas, or maybe they find themselves hungry all the time. Perhaps a bit childish at times? Any virtues should also be listed here. Are they polite, have the patience of a saint or perhaps they are always giving to others? What kind of vices do they have? Is your character a lecher? Maybe he’s a vengeful bastard who feels a need to kill everyone who slights him. Fears are necessary to have too! Everything you wish to be known about your character belongs here.

History: What made your character who they are today? Did they move around a lot? Have a traumatic incident occur? How was their childhood? What have they done up until now? Maybe they were very smart at school, and maybe they were home schooled. Put if they engaged in sports, music, drugs, or have a record with the cops.

Re: VCR User Manual: No one reads these damn things!

Template for Non-playable Characters
Obviously NPCs are going to have slightly different set up than regular profiles because they’re not the same! Since an NPC is usually only important to tinier bits of the plot, the information regarding them while important does not need to be as descriptive as a regular character and only needs to be explored as far as their role goes within the plot. Information about these characters aren’t going to be blatantly obvious, so you have to go on appearances and what you can see and what is important to the plot itself. A minister who is corrupt and accepts bribes may be important if the plot involves getting information passed through a government, but knowing who the beggar who acted as an informant for you is descended from ancient kings probably isn’t going to affect the plot all that much.

Given Name: What

Role: NPCs gotta do what an NPCs gotta do. Are they an informant? A weaponsdealer? Maybe they’re the father of the girl that was kidnapped and who’s funding your expedition to save her!

Apparent Age: It’s unlikely the character is going to directly state his age unless directly asked (why would you ASK THAT, IT DOESN’T MATTER.) so state approximately how old they look.

Abilities: What are your character's strengths? Are they a good fighter or runner? Do they have magic of some sort? What kind of skills do they have? Maybe they are a top swimmer, can remember names very well, or are a great cook! As this is NPC, please try to keep things relevant – we don’t need to know that the man who hired the group of individuals to kill the men who killed his father has a fondness for gardening.

Inabilities: What CAN’T your character do? They may have a problem looking at others eyes, or they may kill every plant they touch. Maybe they can’t fight, or they’ve poor balance. Maybe every spell they use turns people’s hair green!

Personality: Try to keep things on the basis that only the characters involved would be able to know or derive from basic conversations unless there is another need, for example, if the character is the grandfather of a character in the plot, then obviously you would need to list more information. Is he short to the point? Perhaps she’s a socialite? Tell us about who they are.

History: Keep it relevant to the plot; we don’t need to know every detail the character has been through, just a brief overview of why they’re involved in the story and perhaps a tiny bit about their background.

WHERE DID MY THREAD GO?
You might have made an RP, forgotten about it, and now it's not here! Or you participated in a really cool one but it isn't here either!

No worries! Games that have become inactive or have been requested to be moved, will be stored in the Tome of Memories. This sub-forum serves as an archive for the Virtual Character Reality, and is where you will find them. Zelda RPG storylines will be stickied as we believe those posts are the highest quality here. Everything else you will find below them.

Re: VCR User Manual: No one reads these damn things!

❤❤❤❤in' prefixes, how do they work?
When you create a thread, you have an option to add three prefixes. Open, closed, and OWP. Other threads in this section have the same thing. What do these mean?

Open: This means that the roleplay is completely open - anyone may join and at any time.

Closed: This prefix means that the game in question is closed to additional players, and/or is invite only.

OWP: This means the roleplay is Open With Permission. The roleplay is still open, but the game master has requested that you ask them for permission before you make a character.

You can't change a prefix after you've created your thread. If you would like a change, PM one of the moderators.
