But the majority of the Christians are "good". They don't spout non-sense or damn you for not believing in their specific denomination. Unless they're Jehova's Witness.

But wouldn't believing the Christian God exists make them Christian?

They want proof. Their saying that the Christian God, or any other god, MIGHT exist, but they don't know for sure.

no you are actually very wrong again.

strong atheists believe there are no deities, but the only criteria for atheism is to not believe in any deities (to have a lack of belief, or negative belief). Atheism is just anything that is not theism.

agnostics believe there might be a deity, but they don't usually specify which religion that deity might belong to.

No. They believe it could exist. They can believe the Giant Spaghetti Monster could exist, and that the Christian God exist. They're not sure, and aren't faithful to either one. Therefore, they're agnositc.

Honestly it's because I've experienced God what he can do. I've heard him speak (not audibly), he's helped me through many hard times, and has smacked me when I've been an idiot. It's hard explaining it to someone who thinks I'm talking out my butt cheeks, but it's really that way for me. To me, someone saying God isn't real is like saying my dad isn't real. People think I'm blind and thickheaded for not being open to other possibilities, but so far I haven't found any other idea that has seemed more true to me.

Speaking of being blind and thickheaded... It's all about belief. Belief is to be completely convinced of something that you cannot know, or see. If you could prove that God exists then where is the faith? It's through faith and action you get grace. Without it, no grace, and no chance of be victorious against the sin, and then become free from it.

Also, the mere fact of believing is pretty hard. Faith can move mountains, (At least we say it in norwegian, don't know if it's the same in english), but you would probably not believe that.
'There was a woman living on a farm who needed some more field. So she prayed for God to move the mountain before she went to bed. But when she woke up, and looked out of the window the mountain stood there, just as tall and solid as the day before. And what did the woman say? "Just as I thought." Well, then she didn't believe then.
How can you expect to experience God if you don't believe? It's written in the bible that the one who pray with doubt cannot expect to receive from God.

Yeah, the sad thing is there are very, very few cool Christians out there. I'm blessed to know a few. In fact, one of my closest friends of the last two years is very much a devoted Christian. But, like me, he puts his beliefs in context. He's aware that there is a chance he's completely, totally wrong. He's aware that no one can truly know the truth. And yet he chooses to believe the teachings of Jehovah's Witness.

In the end, if no one can know the truth, then it doesn't matter what you believe as long as you don't let it cripple your interactions with people of other beliefs.
