The NPC Thread List Idea Discussion Thread

Okay, I got this idea from Anime_Queen's thread about free-use characters.
The proposal is, make a list of free-use NPC characters made by Escapists like me or Sabbo, or Librarian, or Scott, or etc. etc.

Now, this would be good and all, except that each NPC would need it's own profile, just like a regular character. Now, just like a regular character, we need to make sure crappy NPCs like The Grand Inquisitor sneak into the list, we need some sort of approval process.

My question is, would this screening process be more lenient then the current one for regular characters, and would any E.H. Council members be willing to (dis)approve any NPCs in their spare time?

So, I kinda want your questions and comments for this idea.

To make this post more relevant, I'll say that I see no problem with it. It would be basically the same thing as making a playable character.

I am pretty sure this needs to be Council approved.

Why does this thread exist then, if it is nothing more then the same thing Asia posted. Other then you creating it.

Things that appear to have no purpose...need to be council approved to make sure they are useful and not redundant. Perhapes Mod approved would have been better.

Her idea was about non-NPC characters, for the most part, and it didn't wonder about any sort of screening process for these characters. Mine does.

It was getting to that part. We had yet to decide to even go through with the idea. Don't get ahead of yourself.

Isn't the name "NPC" quite the opposite of what you have planned?

The following ideas are being or will be covered in the Box under this umbrella:

1. Pre-made characters for use by newcomers to the EH, which is Lady's adaptation of an idea I had.

2. Pre-made non-player characters (NPCs) which may be used by any person in their roleplays. This is one part of the idea I had.

3. Pre-made monsters (a type of NPC) for characters to fight against or interact with in their roleplays, to be listed in a bestiary thread. This is the other part of the idea I had.


All of these shall require an approval process which is, as far as I know, currently being discussed and developed in detail, or soon will be.

If there's nothing I've mentioned that is your idea, then I apologize for wasting your time.

Also, if these ideas are or this umbrella idea is approved by the BA council and BA moderators, I am certain that someone or a number of councilors will step up to approve these characters as needed. Otherwise, I'm sure someone else would be willing to take a place as a BA councilor for the purpose, as the idea has met with much positive feedback, so far.

Should the 3rd idea be passed, I would volunteer my services.

I had a similar idea, except, possibly merge the two NPC types into one thread, and get rid of the first idea for reasons I expressed in the other thread.

Nope. These characters can just be used by multiple people, in multiple RPs. However, that can't be the character they are (role)playing.

Ugh. VN, stop trying to be clever-- you are not good at it. NPC stands for NON PLAYER CHARACTER; it is the very opposite of what you are talking about, at least use the right terminology.

If you're talking about just having characters randomly showing up in threads over and over, might I remind you that the Universe is not a continuity, but more of a running gag. There is nothing that says that there is a canonical list of what one can or cannot do here. This entire idea is pointless and makes no sense. If one wants to make a character to have as an NPC in a thread, there is no stopping them-- at least not until they try to start using said characters as their main.

I'm not trying to be clever. Go read my first post again. My first post specifically stated that they would be non-playable.

Then explain the NPCs which already exist. It's a widely accepted term in the BA for recurring characters who have no bio, or perhaps just a small one as an addendum to a proper character.

And nobody ever proposed these NPCs be used as a main character in an RP.

@the point of this thread: One word - why? What would be the point? If one person comes up with a great NPC and someone else wants to use them as an antagonist or contact or some such, it would go a bit like this:

Person1: Hey, can I use so-and-so in an RP I'm planning?
Person2: Sure. Here's some extra info you'll need to avoid screwing up my creation.
Person1: Thanks!

So...why the thread? Just something to formalise something that can already happen anyway?

I always thought of it more as a somewhat contrived excuse to have a half-dragon face off against Jedi. Different people, different opinions, I guess.

Drammor'd be better suited to answer the first part of your post though, as he was the one to first come up with the idea I think. :/

no, i get what drammor is saying. no one is playing the npc characters. they're part of the rp. but not being played. like an npc in a video game. he's there, he supports the storyline and whatnot, but you can't of course play him.
