“Oh, you’re making a face? I didn’t realize my attentions nauseated you so. I just assumed you had a homely look to you.”
~ Ool, in the Undesirables.

Ool D’Eurts. Figures a drow would have such a difficult last name, but I’ve seen harder ones to pronounce. But more interesting is the first name of this character. “Ool” which on one occasion Dakine told me that his name was anagram for “out of luck.”
Out of luck is one phrase that seems to fit this character completely. He was born and raised in drow society. What and who are the drow? They are a type of dark elf, more well known in Dungeons and Dragons. The drow are considered a particularly evil race of elves. How evil or how inherently evil they are depends on the source. However, Dakine’s character comes from dark elves who would claim they simply have a value system that differs from those of other elves and humans. Indeed, they are not simply born “evil” but raised within a specific culture. This is important in understanding the intricate aspects of this particular character which makes him so defined and developed.
The main rule in drow society is:
don’t get caught. Their goddess is a spider queen called Lolth, who prizes cunning and cleverness as virtues and mercy and kindness as vices. Their world is a struggle of superiority and inferiority, power and control in order to reach the top of their hierarchy or at least as far as you can manage to get before someone else kills you for your position.
In this game of survival of the fittest, Ool is at the bottom of the barrel. This is due to the fact that he was born color blind, which interferes with his ability to see comfortably and well in the drow’s special infrared vision. This already marks him as inferior, the shallowest end of the good breeding gene pool. As if to mark him for his colorblindness, his eyes are a pale, golden amber. Drow typically deem one of good breeding (for males) if they are tall, well muscled, have rich red colored eyes, and no disabilities of any kind.
Ool has none of these things.
He is shorter than usual, thin and nearly emaciated. All nobles are required at some point to survive a certain school for training in combat and melee. Ool did indeed survive this school, though not as the top of his class but nearer toward the bottom. It was most likely out of his wit, which he would need a lot of to survive drow society with his inherent physical weaknesses and deficiencies.
Ool was born in a noble house, meaning he is part of the elite group in drow society. Each noble house is ranked by number, and his was about 5th in the underdark city of Jabar'olath (this is considered rather high in rank). Ool was born as First Boy. However, due to the fact that he was considered genetically inferior, Ool has been hidden way, closer to the slave’s quarters of his noble house. His hair is cut short, despite his initial high status as a noble. His matron mother keeps him hidden way from view. In spite of his inferior aspects, Ool still has his place in his house as a very fine artist and stone carver. He makes sculptures, often for temples dedicated to Lolth (not that he much enjoys making these pieces). He is also very good at potion crafting. Part of what enables him to defend himself in more underhanded means.
Ool is a colorful and well rounded character. He is definitely not your conventional hero, but nor is he a conventional villain. He wanders almost absentmindedly in the gray areas of morality. Ool is quirky and unusual, having been rather isolated for the majority of his life. One could call him socially awkward. He can make others uncomfortable and relish it, or simply not notice his mannerisms might be strange. He attempts be prideful while nursing an inferiority complex given to him by his family and his society. He has a sharp tongue that can deliver quick jabbing insults or scathing sarcasm, which he tends to do even if he doesn’t mean to. As expected of a drow, he does not like to show his weaknesses or vulnerability to others who could always possibly be an enemy in his eyes, for drow are always paranoid. He has also become rather addicted to the drugs he manufactures, partly due to the fact that he had no one else but himself to test them on. Of course, the drugs also offered a blissful escape from the reality of his life and his isolation. Thus, Ool is a faithful addict who is not shy about it. It also seems to contribute to his malnutrition, as the drugs seems to make Ool dislike the consistency of food or simply enable him to not feel hunger and forget to eat.
It seemed Ool was doomed to a miserable and numbing life in the corner of his noble household. Only to receive visits from his sister or mother that only included beatings, verbal or physical (females are the dominate sex in drow society). However, in a roleplay, the Undesirables, Ool is offered a chance to escape his house by attempting to murder his matron and sister with the help of the most unlikely of people. Maybe he is not as out of luck as his name seems to imply.
Ool is one of my most favorite of characters in the BA. He’s not a powerful warrior, but a spineless coward who would easily pick his own life over those of his allies. Ool is so unconventional and interesting that he is always fun to role play with. He is rude and uncouth with a strange elegance that is all his own. He would be a handsome fellow if it weren’t for the expressions he pulls onto his face. Due to not being a very battle oriented character, Ool is a strong character to play with in more dynamic settings including plot and social character interactions. Even so, it can be hard to get this recluse to come out of his cave. However, he has strength to lend his allies in his potion-making abilities, concocting very complex poisons and drugs.
