[ WMM ] File types.

I was unsure whether to post this in the technology section, or here. Because it's both a technical question, and sort of a homework question. Simply put: My friend and I have filmed a short film for class on his camera, uploaded all of the scenes onto my laptop, and now I need to compile all of them together on Windows Movie Maker. All of the file types are .AVI, and for some reason when I try to put them in the timeline, they just show up as a black screen and the audio only. How do I get it so that it shows the video AND audio?

WMM is annoying that way. Do you know what video codec you're using?

A "Flip Video". Plugs right into the computer.

Re: [ WMM ] File types.

Ah, no, that's a camcorder.

A video codec is something like DivX, software that lets your computer read different video types. Normally you need a separate codec for most video types, though Windows ships with quite a few.

The thing is, for some reason the one that ships with Windows for .avi files doesn't always play nice with WMM, so you may have to use a different one (which, odds are, will not alway splay nice with WMM, unfortunately.)

At least, that's my best guess based on my sister's multi-year struggle to get WMM to do anything with .avi files.

So, what I'd try doing is downloading the DivX codec and seeing if installing that makes things work.
