Lightbulb For the math elitists.

Ok, here's a problem I developed a few months ago...

(x^y)+1 =(y^x)
x+1=y

There are three ordered pair (x,y) solutions. What are they?

Re: For the math elitists.

I think I got one. (0,1)

*edit*

got another one (1, 2)

*edit*

um is the other one (2, 3) ?

I really don't know the entire "proper" method.

but I just used simple substitution.

(x^(x+1)) + 1 = (x+1)^x

this worked out to get me to this equation

(x + 1)^x - ((x)^x)x = 1

I originally tried to solve setting equal to zero, but I noticed that if x is 0 then anything in the left side is going to come out to 1 - 0 which satisfies the equation.

Then I was like, what the hell lets see if one works for x as well. Sure enough, it came out to 2 - 1 = 1.

then I was like, ok maybe the next one is two for x.......

and sure enough, 9 - 8 = 1

obviously I just plugged in the x solutions to get the Y values.

Guessing and checking is not how I was taught to solve equations. I just haven't done math in 4 years.................

I used to be an ace at a calculus.... Got an A in the course with out hardly any work.... DX

Re: For the math elitists.

Here's an easy one.

3x + 2y - z = 14
5x + 2y + 3z = 50
2x - y - 3z = 21

Find the values.

Re: For the math elitists.

A maths problem?

Here is an elementary one. Like the most basic, simplest one I could come up with.

I drew it on paint since I don't know how to type the intergral symbol without going "int".

I think you solve something that simple.

Re: For the math elitists.

... actually, if you haven't had calculus, you can still get the answer by looking at an integration table. This is one of the simplest problems.

*still trying to figure out how a graphing calculator would help*

Graphers can do intergration now Jehanne. Even I didn't know till I had to go with my little brother to buy him one for back to school (yes I have to his back to school shopping for him D: ).

Yeah, it was a bad title, but this is just going to be little stuff.

Plus, I'm only going into Pre-Calc *hides shame*.

Re: For the math elitists.

Sorry to double-post, but this warrants its own.

I tried to solve it, but I had recorded it incorrectly, so I screwed up. I was thinking of what the solution was correctly, which I eventually found online...

Re: For the math elitists.

Alright, this is for over-the-summer Calc. homework. Not sure about these questions though.

Confirm the limits algebraically:

** ^ denotes: to the power of** (for ex. 3x^2 means 3x squared)

1.) The limit as x approaches 0 of (5x^3 + 8x^2) / (3x^4 - 16x^2).
*I know the answer, I just don't know how to do it.*

2.) The limit as x approaches 0 of ((sin 2x) / x).

3.) The limit as x approaches 0 of ((sin^2 of x) / x).

A rock released from rest to fall on a small airless planet falls y= gt^2 times m in t sec, g a constant. Suppose that the rock falls to the bottom of a crevasse 20 m below and reaches the bottom in 4 sec.

a) Find the value of g.

b) Find the average speed for the fall.

c) With what speed did the rock hit the bottom?

Thanks for ANY help I can get!!!!!
