How do save an image from the clipboard?
Like if I copy an image, how do I save it to file?

That, or just right click the image and click save image as...

I want to copy my desktop. With folders and all, and I had to downgrade my computer to make it faster so we don't have paint anymore. But I'll keep trying

If you want to copy your desktop click Prnt Scrn. It takes a copy of whatever you're looking at. Then paste that somewhere else, like paint, and save.

Personally I'd recommend IrfanView. GIMP is more of a Photoshop-type program; using it just to paste screenshots of your desktop is somewhat overkill.
