Riddles
Okay, anyone who wants to post a riddle for the rest of the ZU comunity to enjoy may do so here. The only things i ask it that you know the answer to the riddle before you post it, and if you already know a riddle, give others some time to think about it before posting the answer. Here are a couple of my own.
Riddle #1(this is one of those kindergartens solve it but not U grads and it was goin around e-mails alot of you may know it)1. How do you put an elephant in the fridge? 2. How do you put a giraff in the fridge? 3.The lion king held an animal meeting of all the animals in his jungle, they all showed up except one, which was it? 4.You are on an expedition through the jungle when you come to a river invested with man eating crocs, how do you get across? (*remember, think stupid! )Riddle #2 3 men are captured by natives. The natives tie them to 3 posts aranged so that the man in the back can see the two infront of him, the man in the middle can see the one infront of him, and the man in the front can't see anyone else. The natives show them 5 hats, 3 black, 2 white and tell them each man will be wearing one. If any of the 3 can guess the color of their own hat, all 3 of them may go free. After about 10 minutes, the man in the front yells out the color of his hat, and all of them go free. What color is his hat, and how did he figure it out? Riddle #3 You are on a game show in the final round to win a car. In order to win the car, you must pick which of 3 curtains it is behind. 2 of the curtains have nothin, and of course, 1 contains the car. After you pick one, the host opens one of the other two, to show that it hold nothing. The host then asks you if you would like to change your choice. Does it make more sense to stay with the one you picked, or change? Riddle #4 This is not a written riddle, but for anyone who want a real challenge, or just does not want to sleep for a few days, look up "Zest Riddle". It will screw with you ![]()

Re: Riddles
I believe I have the solution for riddle number two; the front guy's hat is black. The logical process is as follows:
Of necessity, at least one person has to be wearing a black hat. If the two guys in front were wearing white hats, the person in the back would know that his hat was black, meaning that the front two hats are either white/black or black/black. The guy in the middle realizes that the guy in the back knows this; if the front guy's hat was white, he would know that his hat was black. As the middle guy does not know the color of his own hat, it stands to reason that the first guy's hat is black. |

Re: Riddles
Most of my ideas for riddle number one involve setting the elephant on fire and putting its ashes in the fridge, or something similarly cruel. And as for crocodiles, I'm hoping the character in the riddle saw fit to pack a shotgun. Or maybe there's a bridge somewhere...

1. open door, put elephant in 2.open door, take elephant out, put giraffe in 3.The giraffe, its in the fridge 4. Swim across, the crocs are at the meeting As for riddle 3, if you already guessed and they showed you only one curtain, that still leaves a possible 2. Granted if the curtain they lifted wasn't yours you would still have a 50/50 chance of getting the car, what's the point in changing?

Riddle #3
You are on a game show in the final round to win a car. Stick to your guns. They want you to get it wrong or they have to give you a car. They show you the curtin with nothing behide it to cause confusion and doubt. I say stick to your 1st answer. If you were wrong they usually show you that you were wrong.

Re: Riddles
If we assume the car is behind curtain A, the following could happen:
1) You pick Curtain A. The game show host can pick any of the other curtains, either one won't contain the car. You shouldn't change your guess. 2) You pick Curtain B. You're wrong. The game show host now has to pick Curtain C, the final one left is A, so you should change your choice. 3) You pick Curtain C. You're wrong. The game show host now hast to pick Curtain B, the final one left is A, so you should change your choice. 2 out of 3 times, it's wiser to change your choice. So the correct answer to the "riddle" should be Change your guess. ![]() And if I got the answer to your riddle wrong, send me a PM. ![]() EDIT: Right... no mod powers. ^^;

Re: Riddles
The problem there is: How can it always be better to switch your choice? If that's the case, then it's also true that you should just stick with your first guess.
At least, if this is the paradox I'm thinking it is.

Re: Riddles
Statistically speaking, it's better to change your choice. I think if you actually were at the game show, it'd be a good idea to go with gut feelings instead.
Say there were an infinite number of curtains. You pick one, and the game host removes all other curtains except one. Would you change your choice? I can save the Universe using a kettle and some string, and look at me! I'm wearing a vegetable.

Now, that would leave you with a 50/50 chance, not a 1/3, as you already know the one he showed you is wrong.

Re: Riddles
Quote:
When you first pick a curtain, there is a 3:1 that you will gwt it right. The game show host then reveals one of the other two curtains. (He will always do this regardless of weather you picked the right one or not because there will always be at least one with nothing behind it). Now when he askes you if you want to change the scenario is different. Your original pick was still a 3:1 chance because you knew that one of the other curtains had nothin behind it, the only difference is now you knwo which one. However, if you change your answer, you hav a 2:1 chance of getting it right, meaning that the odds are in your favour to change curtains. It's a bit hard to wrap your head around, but its true once u get it. Now that my first 3 are done, does anyone else have some riddles to post?

Re: Riddles
Here are a couple of mathematical riddles. No knowledge beyond high school algebra and geometry is required to solve them.
1) Prove that the general solution of a quadratic equation (of form ax^2 + bx + c = 0) is x = [-b +- sqrt(b^2 - 4ac)]/2a. 2) Find the area of the shaded region: ![]() I realize that the picture is hard to read, but the square is supposed to be 40 units in length. |

Re: Riddles
Simple. Take the girl of your dreams. You said the pregnant woman may die and you may never get to repay your friend. That doesn't mean those things will happen.

Re: Riddles
I'm going to have to go with the pregnant woman.
First off, she has the least chance of survival. Secondly, you're saving two lives, where the other options save one.
