It is a man.

Two legs twice is a bit weird, but yeah, this sounds like the Sphynx's riddle to Oedipus.

"What walks on four legs at sunrise, two legs at noon, and three legs in the evening?" the answer being, of course, a man.

Because he goes from crawling (2), walking, walking some more (2), then he has a cane (3), then he dies.

Oh it is? Never played it, I just figured it out. It was a pretty easy riddle.

It's also a very famous one.

Maybe it is famous, and in a game with loose literature roots(dante's inferno) I guess it makes sense.(though completley different authers and time periods hehe) Only difference is if you guessed wrong you would be attacked by swarms of demons

Yup it's man. It's from a story/book. I forgot what it was called.
I think one of the guys in the story stabbed his eyes out, cause he couldn't bear the pain of something. I don't remember clearly. EXCEPT it's from a story, I know that much.

After reading all these posts, I think the answer is 'man'.

Indeed, the story is Oedipus Rex.

Well, sorta, Oedipus does beat the sphinx, but I don't believe he does so in any particular play, it's just an act attributed to him.

However, he does stab his eyes out in Oedipus Rex, because he accidentally slew his father and married his mother.

Is not the riddle mentioned in one of the plays - the reason that the defeat of the Sphinx is significant is that that is the reason why the Thebans made him king - when they thought that he was a Corinthian.
