Can anyone help me figure out this Geometry problem?

If X/4 = Y/5 then X + 4/4 = ?/5

NOTE: Think of / as a fraction symbol.

Re: Can anyone help me figure out this Geometry problem?

...So, X + 1 = a/5?

Well, what's a? Do you want X+1 in terms of Y, or as a number?

Re: Can anyone help me figure out this Geometry problem?

To be honest, I'm not sure what this question is supposed to be solving.

The only possible answer I can think of is the following:

The only numbers that are equal for x/4 and y/5 are multiples of 4 equal x and multiples of 5 equal y (0 included.) What that has to do with the problem might need more explanation, perhaps I don't understand the context of the problem.

BUT for x+1 = z/5

z = 5x+5 for all real numbers.

x+1 = z/5
(multiply both sides by 5)
5x+5 = z

Is there any more explanation on your assignment?

...Oh, do you mean (X + 4)/4?

Well, that's a bit different, then.

However, I don't think that we have enough information to give an answer. The question can be restated as:

X/4 + 1 = A/5

However, that's two unknowns and only one (usable) equation, so good luck finding a solution.

Do you, perhaps, mean a question like this:
(X + 4)/4 = (Y + A)/5

I don't believe that that is solvable either, though. (three unknowns, one equation.)

So, were you given any more information?

Edit: Also, how is this geometry? It seems to be just algebra.

I think it's a two-column proof?
