Re: PRIVATE VS PUBLIC EDUCATION
I've been to a public school all my life. Sure, some of the education sucks but I learned some things on my own as well. I don't think private schools are any better or worse as I toured one before and the kids acted the same in a more sophisticated manner as any kid in a public high school would act. Also, I've noticed the quality of education is better in a suburban public school than it's a city public school (I go to a city high school after all), so I guess I'd have to say there is no significant superiority between public and private school. If you have the right teachers and you make the right friends, public school is just as enriching as private school is.

Re: PRIVATE VS PUBLIC EDUCATION
I don't think there's any difference in public vs. private education. It depends on what school offers what material. I go to a public school but that doesn't necessarily mean I get crappy education. Actually, my school offers a variety of AP classes (For those that don't know, AP classes are college courses.) in which I'm taking a few this year and plan to take a few more next year. I know a private school that offers the same amount of courses too. Again, it all depends on what the school offers, and what kind of atmosphere you like to be in.

Every public school I've been to was nothing like that. Sure, there were a few small groups of, well idiots. But the majority of the school were smart, well brought up people. So, we kinda overshadowed the dumb ones. |

Re: PRIVATE VS PUBLIC EDUCATION
I live in the US and went to public school on California my whole life. I went to 2 different elementary schools, a middle school, and 3 high schools, plus I'm an education major and about to graduate and start teaching in public school. So I feel that I have a decent amount of experience with public schools.
Some public schools are almost like private schools with respect to variety of classes and teacher quality. I think the biggest difference is actually in the students. Kids in public school can slack of and no one cares because their education is free and there are so many students that teachers get overwhelmed and lazy about helping every single low-achieving student. The private schools that I know about typically require yearly tuition, and I think that when parents have to pay for your education they take more interest in your grades, and the smaller classes allow teachers to provide more attention to individual students. There are also a ton of things that factor into public schools. I've actually attended a public school where uniforms were required, and that was because the school board voted yes with approval from parents. The school board has a lot of say with what happens, as do principals and other administraters, in addition to the area that the school is in. Private schools can choose not to accept students, although nowadays they need a really good reason to do it. My personal opinion on whether private schools are better than public schools is that I think your education largely depends on the effort you put in to it. Kids can go to private school and get nothing out of it because they're slacking off, and public school students can get perfect scores on the SAT and go to Harvard, like a friend of mine who is now at UCSF Medical School (one of the best in the country, if not the best). But most public school students will slack off if they can because we think school sucks, so public schools get a bad rep. It all depends on what you do with what you're given.

Re: PRIVATE VS PUBLIC EDUCATION
The public California high school I have been attending for the past three years is abysmal. The campus is beautiful, the extracurriculars are abundant, but the teachers leave something to be desired. A lot of them are just coaches placed in whichever core class they need more teachers in. My Pre-calculus teacher is just a basketball coach and I have learned... frankly, nothing. Many of the teachers do not have an M.A. in their field at all.
That has been going for quite some time. Starting next year though, there will be no AP science classes and they are cutting out most of the electives and language classes. Something about a budget freeze happening all through California and 4 billion dollars being cut out of education. I'm just glad I only have one year left of lower education. Though, if someone can find me a NON-religious, no uniform wearing, local private school, sign me up! |
