Re: Quick equation question
k + 12 - 5 = 40 is simple.
(12 - 5 = 7) k + 7 = 40 k= 40 - 7 k = 33 x + y - 6(3) = 65 (6*3 = 18) x + y - 18 = 65 x + y = 65 + 18 x + y = 83 When you have a series of numbers and variables you first find out what the values of the numbers are, (6*3 or 12 -5) and then work from there.

Re: Quick equation question
Quote:
K + 12 - 5 = 40 K + 12 = 40 + 5 K + 12 = 45 K = 45 - 12 K = 33 The same number of steps, but with signs reversing an extra time, which increases the odds of a mistake being made. Come grade 11 algebra you're more likely to get a question wrong because you forgot to flip a sign then any other reason, so the fewer times you have to the better. Quote:

Re: Quick equation question
x + y - 6(3) = 65
Firstly, ^^ turn 6(3) into 18. x + y - 18 = 65 And then Add 18 to 65. x + y = 83 And thats the closest you can get. Understand or not? (Hey, do you people notice that no members from NAYRU Clan (wisdom) have posted in this yet?

Anyways, I'll try clarifying the other equation. k + 12 - 5 = 40 First, you subtract 5 from 12 So K + (12 -5) = 40 K + 7 = 40 Now, you're trying to get K all by itself, so you subtract 7 from that side of the equation. However, whenever you do an operation to one side of an equation you have to do it to the other side. So you get: K + 7 -7 = 40 -7 K = 33
