Re: math: help

Well, first you should reduce the fractions down to smaller fractions. Then get rid of the double plus signs and make it just one plus sign. then, mulitply by the lowest factor of both denomenators to get a whole number.

EX: 3/9y = 4/9x

multiply by 9 to get

3y=4x

then if you want to, divide by three on both sides to get

y=3/4x

see, hope that helps!

Re: math: help

In addtion, if there's a % sign, you should divide that value by 100.

Eg.
100% = 1
1% = 0.01

Re: math: help

could you rewrite it (perhaps a little more clear)... or maybe draw the equation in paint or something... It's a little confusing.

This is off topic but I'm in 9th grade honors two, I was wondering what you guys are learning, I was just wondering if it was similar to what we are learning.

First of I need to ask you a few a questions if I have any hoping of trying this problem. first. you stated 098/60 is that 0.98? or is that a typo because I'm confused about the zero. Second, when you state -x is that negative x or is minus x? if its negative then I'm not sure what your doing with the 098/60 and the -x late I checked % doesn't join two numbers together... here is my best guess at this problem
8.9390168895144264602392681210404 is the best answer I could come up with.. I'd put that into a faraction but I'm not very good at that.

anyway don't trust my answer only having a 9th grade honors education I took a major shot in the dark on this one. But it's the best answer I can come up with.

Re: math: help

My Grade 11 math experience can make sense of some of that, but I must admit that % -x + + is a wee bit beyond my ken. You sure that that's how the question was written?

Well, assuming that that is written correctly the only values I can give you are these (Exact values, not rounded fractions.):
7/435 = 49/15 % -x + +438/49
Since you really don't want fractions you should probably multiply everything by (435)(15)(49) which gives you:
7(15)(49) = 49(435)(49) % -x(435)(15)(49) + +438(435)(15) =>
5145 = 1 044 435 % -319 725x + +2 857 950

These numbers are rather ludicrous though, you certain that you've got this written out correctly? And why on earth do you have a % in the middle of nowhere? 1 044 435% works, but 1 044 435 % -... doesn't. On top of that, why do you have two addition signs there? If that's supposed to mean that the second number is positive, that's assumed unless you put a - in front of it. Finally, is that negative 319 725x or subtract 319 725x? One means that you're multiplying x by 1 044 435, the other means you're subtracting it.

Re: math: help

Mathematics is my career, but I have to admit I have also been defeated by this one...
Tyrr (if you're still there, and if you still need help), could you please check if the equation is right? are there any parenthesis in the book (or whatever)?

Re: math: help

Being from the same province, and so likely on the same ciriculum, I can guarentee that its not something I learned in grade 8.

I'm leaning towards joke topic/trolling...

Re: math: help

A joke topic? Quite likely.
Trolling? How, exactly? Trolling is when someone attempts to provoke an argument.

Re: math: help

By definition (on the internet and off) "trolling" is an attempt to provoke someone into doing what is not in their best interest... like wasting time in a thread like this... and you got your argument...

Re: math: help

I thought 098/60% is not possible since you can't do fractions with percentages.
