German word for Potassium?
I have to do this element poster for my Chemistry class and my teacher wants us to put the German word for the element we're doing on the poster. I'm doing Potassium and I have no clue what the German word for it is. Can someone tell me?
It would also be nice if someone could tell me the origin and meaning of the name "Potassium" and who discovered the element and when it was discovered. I need to have that on my poster too.

Re: German word for Potassium?
The German word is "Kalium"
Whereas the origins are... "Potassium was discovered in 1807 by Sir Humphrey Davy, who derived it from caustic potash (KOH)." How this helps! |

It helps, but I still need to know the meaning of the word "Potassium."
Thanks, though.

Re: German word for Potassium?
As in the definintion? Well that would be:
A soft, silver-white, highly or explosively reactive metallic element that occurs in nature only in compounds. It is obtained by electrolysis of its common hydroxide and found in, or converted to, a wide variety of salts used especially in fertilizers and soaps. Atomic number 19 Atomic weight 39.098 Melting point 63.65?C Boiling point 774?C Specific gravity 0.862 Valence 1 Other than the definition I have no clue what you would need... |

Re: German word for Potassium?
No, no, no, I mean like Hippopotamus means "river horse." I need a meaning like that.
EDIT: and no, Kalium isn't the German word for Potassium. That's the latin word for it. Hence the symbol being K.

Re: German word for Potassium?
I've checked it in most places... Kalium is what the German's call Potassium... There are no other names for Potassium other than Kalium... Unless someone just calls it the "silver metal that blows up..." So I'm sure that Kalium is the name that German's use for Potassium... And if you want a meaning of the word, the best place to look would to be to find the Latin root for it... I'll look it up... Just a sec...
EDIT: looking at some translations it says "Powerful", with "pot" being the Latin word for powerful... other than that... I can't find anything...

Re: German word for Potassium?
Well, if you're sure Kalium is what the Germans call it, okay, I'll go with that. But I'm going to blame you if my teacher says I have the wrong name!
lol, j/k.I went to Wikipedia and Yahoo and stuff and found some of the information I need, so I'm almost through with finding all of it, even though a small amount of it I can't find and will have to leave out. >.>

Re: German word for Potassium?
Um, wouldn't it just take less time to look it up yourself instead of making a thread about it?
I also checked www.freetranslation.com and put in potassium in the english to german translator, and it came out as Kalium...I think you're safe with that. |
