Re: science fair project

There are so many things you could do!

First, however, what are your skills? Can you do any wood working? What about modelling clay? Anything like that.

What are you interested in?

What kind of project does it have to be? (So, do you need to build a robot, or can you do a text-only presentation on penguins?)

How much time do you have?

Any specific topic?

Answer those and I might be able to give you a few hints on subjects that you'd like, I'm not going to go and give you a concrete idea, though, as that's half the challenge (and most of the fun.)

Re: science fair project

What grade are you going into? (Forgot to ask this earlier)
What kind of project does it have to be? (Model, bulliten board, Powerpoint, etc.)
How much time do you have to finish it?

Re: science fair project

Well I know that the Solar System is a very cliche science project, but you have to consider the following: There have been discussion about including three+ planets or getting rid of Pluto (the US doesn't want to get rid of it since it was the only planet a U.S. citizen discovered).

So my suggestion for you is, not to focus on the first seven planets, but to focus on the 8th, 9th, and the new ones. Keep people informed about what is the up-to-date system.

Actually, officially today, we have at least two new planets, with one possible new one. the IAU (The people who decide these things) have declared that Ceres (Largest asteroid in the asteroid belt), Charon (Pluto's moon), and possibly another asteroid (The name of which I can't remember), are now officially planets. Anything large enough to be a planet but with an orbit that's > 200 years is now called a 'Pluton', and we have hundreds of those.

The new definition (Or rather, the first, not counting the Greek definition) for a planet is this:
It has to be large enough to form a sphere under it's own gravity.
It has to orbit a star (Charon counts because the centre of it's orbit is just outside of Pluto.)
It's orbit has to take less then 200 years.

It might actually be pretty cool to do a model of the solar system with 2/3 new planets and do a writeup on why they're considered planets now and stuff like that.

Edit: And as I find out just after posting, Pluto is now no longer a planet, same with Ceres and Charon. A new resolution was just passed that amended the above to include that a planet must 'clear it's neighbourhood' of other object.
