[Socrates] Mathemetician?

I'm doing a report for geometry on how Socrates was a mathemetician and what he's done for math today, but I can't find anything about his mathematical side...All I can find is a bunch of philosophy, can someone help me please?

Re: [Socrates] Mathemetician?

Who proposed the topic, you or your teacher? It is well known in the world of classics that Socrates did not write anything on his own, let alone any mathematics. As it were, the only things that we have on Socrates is from the writings of Plato. These are famously called Platonic dialogues, where they explore Socratic questioning. In any event, I can't recall anything from the dialogues having to do with geometry except for one thing. It doesn't really count because the dialogue is about knowledge, not necessarily geometry, but I'll send it to you anyway. The dialogue is called Meno, and I've included a hyperlink to the work from a translator it trust. As I said before, the work has to do with knowledge and virtue and how it's acquired, but he uses a geometric proof to prove his point.

Re: [Socrates] Mathemetician?

Do you mean Pythagoras? The whole Pythagoras' Theorem for triangles and such? If that's what you mean, I can help you with that. I'm just thinking that if your report is for Geometry, this is more likely what you are looking for?

EDIT: Ooh I just realised you wrote this like a month ago... you probably don't need our help on this any more, am I right? Sorry.

Not true. We also have writings by Xenophon.

Pardon me for my targetted innacuracy. If you know of anything of Xenophon's works that at all reference Socrates and Geometry, be my guest. I try not to explain more than I have to. But thanks for being civil anyway.

Ok.

If the threadstarter needs a hand further, he can PM me and I'll reopen this topic.

Until then, -1 to necromancy.

Locked.
