What math is there out there??

Basically i'm in 6th grade, and i'm really advanced in math...

I knew multiplaction in 1st grade...

taught myself negatives in 2nd, and my mom taught me exponents in 2nd...and i also learned division in 2nd.

in 3rd and 4th i got down simple algebra, 5th i did, like....

how to solve how many combinations their are to a lock....and stuff...

6th i learned some trigenomotry, i learned sine, cosine and tangent, pretty easy...and right now i think i'm capable of some complicated algebra, though it might be hard...

so what other kinds of math are their?

there's calculus, and my mom said it was basically f[x], where f is the formula and you formulate x.

whats algorithms? I saw that in the temple of knowledge....

my mom talked about linear and non linear things...

and stuff

I just wanna kno more about math...

>.<

3.1415926 i memorized that so far, i can repeat it anywhere, even though its pretty easy to memorize, you don't use it often to you will probably forget. Every so often I memorize 1 or 2 more numbers until i can memorize pi up to 10 digits, which people say i need to do in high school. i have 7 now...wow...

Hm

I just wanna kno more math.

EDIT

(in other forums i know how stingy people can be about double posting...)

so um, sorry about this not being a problem and all.........but i think its related enough that it should be ok. I haven't been around here long so if it isn't, i'll learn.

EDIT AGAIN

I read a thread about algorithms...its like exponents i discovered and it looks like something simple enough that I can learn it without too much difficulty...

Re: What math is there out there??

I think you mean 'logrithms,' not 'algorithms.' An algorithm is an equation.

Basic trig in 6th grade? Hmm. Not bad.

Linear & non-linear equations refers to graphs of functions. A squared function, y = x^2, doesn not make a line, it makes a parabola, which is a big curve. Cubic (y=x^3) functions make a different curve, and so on.

Whoever told you that you need to memorize 10 decimal places of pi for highschool lied to you.

I suggest avoiding calculus until you know a good bit more, but I could explain that as well.

Do you know how to solve systems of equations? Factoring? Graphing? Pythagorean Theorem?

Re: What math is there out there??

As far as I know, math goes on to Calculus 3 in college. I finished Calculus 2 which had limits, derivatives, Integrals, Differentiation, Sequences and Series, etc.

And I would take Scott's advice if I were you. You need to take College Algebra and Pre Calculus before starting Calculus.

Re: What math is there out there??

i thought my math teacher told me there were 4 calculus's... hmm...

there are so many math courses you can take... why you so obsessed... geez...

but calc is something you should wait until your in least high school before attempting...

Re: What math is there out there??

Three calculus's eh, wow I didn't realize there was that much theoretical math. I'm planning on taking AP Calculus my senior year of High School, so I guess that only means two years of college math. Lozzie I really hope your wrong about the four calculus's, that's way too much math to learn.

As for you Pheonix, I would reccomend taking as much math in as fast as possible, it will make getting into a good career easier. I'm sixteen, but without math I can't do any of my job. My job is roughly, 99.9% math.

Re: What math is there out there??

ok, the college i dropped out of had 3...

If you take AP Calculus in high school and pass the AP test, more than likely you get to pass Calc 1 in college. I did... for those 2 months I went.

edit: there was a management calc... i don't think that is calc 4 though.

Re: What math is there out there??

Oh thanks for that information. So are you saying that if I pass the AP test in High School it counts as passing Calculus 1 in College. Anyway I still hope there's only 3 Calculus's, I don't need that many math classes.

Re: What math is there out there??

Ok thanks....

Yeah, calculus is way over my head...

well...hm....do'nt you need to know at least something about pi somewhere?

it makes sense...but oh well

ok...

thanks

Re: What math is there out there??

You oughta try some classes on probability and statistics, and cryptology, very fun stuff. sorta take math and the real tangible world, and makes em unified.

Re: What math is there out there??

A point you missed, vacum: sixth grade.

Of course you need to know pi, just not that many decimal places. Most teachers (in my experience) will either here you use a calculator or just leave pi in he solution. If you've someone like me who dislikes calculators, you could use long division, but in higher maths, Fractions are more desirable than decimals in most situations.

Just because I said you should avoid calc for now doesn't mean there isn't more to learn. The things I listed before were some things to know before hand.

4. How you know all of this stuff is amazing, and how you strive to learn more topples that. I think you need to do some hard core reseach to finding more mathematical methods.

Re: What math is there out there??

What I did (and will/might do):

Pre-Algebra
Algebra
Algebra 2
Geometry
Trigonometry
Calculus
Calc 2
Calc 3
Calc 4
Physics?

Didn't see you put geometry in there, so I listed that.

And as for pi, just remember that it's π (did that work?) or 3.14. You'll never really have to memorize past .14 really. In higher maths, you'll just use the calculator (for more accuracy).

Re: What math is there out there??

I'm in Math 3 11th grade math all we do is new forms of old stuff. Which is really hard Trig use to be easy but now its hard now. I also Know Logic which can be both easy and hard. Just to warn you if you take Math 3 be prepared for one tuff year.

Re: What math is there out there??

......Wow. You are one smart guy.
I don't know if it's happening elsewhere, but in my school district, freshmen in the class of '09 are going to be taking Geometry instead of the PCM classes. Which is good news for me. I'm in the class of '08, and I escaped taking an entire year of geometry (compared to a semester).
Um...I'm in the Freshman PCMII class (The equivalent of Algebra 2 ) and I have no clue what that "sine, cosine and tangent" is. By "sine", do you mean 'sign'? Hold on, checking dictionary....holy crap, you don't.
Trigonometry....O___o omfg...Kid, you're in way above my head here. I'm good at math, but not that good. I might be able to help you in four or so years, which is when I plan to take Calculus APHonors......

Re: What math is there out there??

there are more in college than calc 3...because you start getting into half derivatives and such...there are also differential equations, number theory, and much more in college that are more difficult than calculus in college. At my college you take calc 3 (which is 2000 level course...or second level) your second or third semester in college...so then the math majors have about 3 years of harder math classes than calculus.

it's cool that you want to learn all this stuff, but you're just a kid. go out and have fun...you have plenty of time to learn all this

Re: What math is there out there??

If you've got algebra and geometry down very well, the usual place to go from there is pre-calculus (a combination of in-depth triginometry and an introduction to the basic concepts of calculus). And calc is an *absurdly* cool topic. In it, you take the formula for a different graph and, instead of finding the height of a particular point on the graph, you end up finding the slope of *any* point on the graph. And the proofs for how people have worked out calc is very cool. Sir Isaac Newton basically came up with the entire field himself, and from there it's expanded into being the basis needed for a *lot* of different other math fields.

^^

I'm not the best at calculus myself. I had a horrid precalc/calc teacher, but I'm wrangling one of my friends into teaching me it over the summer. If you can manage to do precalc at your age, I will be more impressed than I already am. ^_^

Ok, you have no clue what sine, cosine, and tangent are, and you're in Algebra 2, AND you plan to take Honors Calc??? How can you not know what sine, cosine, and tangent are??? They're covered in basic geometry. I suggest you take Pre-Calculus or at least Trigonometry after Algebra 2, cuz you're going to need to know all about sine, cosine, and tangent to take Calc (especially Honors).

As for the little guy -- way to go!!! The world always needs another math freak (so I don't have to be the only one who's good at it! ^_^). Keep it up, and take some of the advice given here and work on mastering Algebra and Geometry before moving to Trig and Calc--it will help you in those future topics. You're awesome!!! ^___________^

andi, i did somewhat good at calc/precalc, i'll help you out if you ever need it. I kick ass at trig...

And the fact I just did a random trig problem on this forum shows my skills aren't rusty
