Speaking: Memorizing

I have a public speach this weekend that I have to try and memorize. I've already started memorizing, but it's not moving fast enough. Is there any tips someone can give me on how to memorize a speech or anything along those lines.

If not, I'm sure I'll be able to manage, but help would be greatly appreciated.

If you can't completely memorize the speech, try remembering the order of your general ideas. How long is the speech (in pages)?

What I do (when it comes to memorization) is repeat lines over and over until they are drilled into my brain (I usually do this for poems, so it may/may not work). I take the very first few sentences/stanzas, read them, re-read them, and then slowly memorize through that way. Then, without looking at the paper, I recite as much as I can. After that, I move on and repeat the process until I've memorized the whole thing. Of course Dekukid's method could really help as well, because when it comes to memorization, you may remember the lines, but sometimes you forget where they go, so general ideas are always good.

I have two questions for you:
How long is it (same question as Dekukid)?
Do you need to underline, or do you want to for preformance?

If you don't need to memorize, still do of course. There's always a different tone when someone is reading, and when they are reciting. Reciting it sounds more flowing. Even if you memorize, I'd recomend for you to still have the papers (as back up) and keep them at your side/on the podium (if it's on a podium, fallow up as you recite, because if you forget/loose your place, it may look a little embarassing while searching for where you left off).

Re: Speaking: Memorizing

Well this may not help much but I'll try. I'm very fortunate when it comes to memorizing. I don't exactly have a photobgraphic but it's close. I remeber everything I hear like someone with a photographic memory remembers everything they see.

My tips for you:

1. Read and re-read the same paragraph about three times. After each time, try to recite what you read out loud.

2. Try to write out your speech from memory to test yourself. Writing it down also helps your brain remember certain key points of the speech that your brain has sort of bookmarked. These little bits set off a little light bulb, allowing you to remember what you're supposed to be talking about.

3. Listen to someone else read the speech to you, hearing the speech will also help you remember it.

Well that's all the advice I can give.

Re: Speaking: Memorizing

If you want to memorize it word for word, I advise you memorize each sentence individually, and then memorize two at a time etc.

If it doesn't have to be word for word, then list the main points in the speech. Then, ad-lib the presentation of the points in front of a mirror. If you can manage to speak clearly without muttering or stuttering with only main points, I advise you memorize the main points and try to clarify linkings between these points. The good thing about this is that if your mind goes blank in the speech, you'll be ready to connect the two points easily.
