German

I'm trying to learn German & Spanish.(I already have a thread for Spanish)
Could you put a German word and what it mean's in English?

Example.

Fertig = Finished.

P.S. My last name is Fertig.

I took German when I was in elementary school, giving up my sundays to do so (it was that or go to Church, hah). I also took a German class last year as one of my first year electives. I actually regret that now, as I was the only first year student in the class.

Great language, but what do you hope to accomplish by us posting German words? Go get a dictionary for goodness sake.

Exactly.

Having people post random words isn't going to teach you the language.

Get an German > English dictionary and then learn the grammar for the language.

Learning a language is not simply learning a word's equivalent. You have to LEARN it. Besides, how will this help with pronunciation?

Google. There are thousand of online dictionaries to aid with foreign languages.

Although you'll need to have an understanding of the language's grammar structure as well, which could be quite difficult to learn on your own.

To learn german, you will need a lot more than random words.

Declining a noun:
Nominative (used for subjects and predicate nominatives)
der (masculine words)
die (feminine and plural words)
das (neuter words)
Genetive (most commonly used for possesion)
des (masculine and neuter)
der (feminine and plural)

Dative (indirect objects)
dem (masculine and neuters)
der (feminine)
den (plural)

Accusative (direct objects)
den (masculine)
die (feminine/plural)
das (neuter)

Question words
Wie: how
Was: what
Warum: why
Wo: where
Wer: who

Prounouns

I-ich
you (singlular) du or Sie (Sie is for talking to someone of higher position than yourself)
he-er
she-sie
it-est
we-wir
you (plural)-ihr
they-sie

Verb conjugation
example verb: laufen (to run)
to find the root of a verb, you take off the en at the end.

----------------Singular---------------------Plural
1st person----- ich laufe---------------------wir laufen
2nd person---- du laufst/Sie laufen----------ihr lauft
3rd person---- er/sie/est lauft---------------sie laufen

That's just the very basic parts of speech. I may post more later though.

This gives you basic sentences in present tense.

By the way, how much do you know about english grammar? The less you know about your own language the harder it is to learn a new one.

Such as do you know what an infinitive is? How about verbals? Subject? Predicate? Direct Object? Indirect Object? Prepositions? Prepositional phrases? Past Present and Future Tense? Past perfect present perfect future perfect? Gerund? Participle? Active Voice? Passive Voice?

What I'm saying is you need to have amazing ability in your native tongue before trying to learn a new language.

You know, speaking and teaching are two totally different things.

Yes, I know. Learning by doing (listening) is my opinion. I learned english the same way and I think he would learn better with a partner who can speak german. But he has to answer. I just wanted to help.

I really don't think this guy wants to take the time it takes to learn a new language.

aye, that is true you have learnt some. But if one really wants to speak a language fluently then one should go to the country. If you have a good teacher then sure you dont need a book or cd. but you cannot learn by memorizing a bunch of words off the internet - you have to speak it- as I assume you have done in class? However to become really good one should go to the country.

For example, my French is good. It was good enough to get top marks in all the exams I did. But I could not talk with french people happily - as my French was not good enough until I spent a month in France staying with my French friend.
