College Choices

I've never given it much though; but, after taking the SAT, and the fact that I'm about to start my senior high school year, I've started thinking much more about it. Now, I've never really been sure of what I should major in; I've always just said, "It would be interesting to pursue a career in game design." That interest may change, sure, but if anyone knows any colleges within Virginia, or around Virginia, that has courses that will help me pursue my interest, please give me some reccomendations. Thanks.

I think it's really going to depend on what aspect of the game industry you want to go into.

Why are you limiting yourself to VA, though? There are going to be schools all across the country that will fit what you want to study.

Here's an article from April of this year I just found on the Internet: The Ultimate Guide to Video Game Degrees and Careers | OEDb. I suggest reading the whole article -- it's got some info about the different types of jobs, as well as schools.

Well, I would want something less in the technical, programming areas, but more in the writing, art, and concept design areas. More in the planning stuff. I'll look at that article.

Well, I have been thinking about looking for colleges elsewhere. I just said Virginia because it would be convenient.

Oh, so maybe an art school... I heard that University of Delaware has a well-known art program. And that might not be too far from you.

I read through most of the article.

The Concept Artist, Scriptwriter, and Game Developer/Designer (I understand that it is a very stressful position, though. I'd probably have to develop some programming skills, though...) positions look the most appealing to me, right now.

Really? I'll keep an eye out for info on that one. Thanks.

There are a lot of artists on this forum; you might be able to get some good recommendations on colleges/universities if they see this thread.

{I'm an engineer. Can't help you much on the artsy stuff.}

If you're thinking about game design, try going to DeVry University. I was thinking about going there, but I changed my major, so now I'm not. But yea, I've spoken with some of the councelors at DeVry, and they have a really good game designing program. I know that they have campuses all over the country, so they might have one in VA. You should check it out.
