top ten best U.S. presidents.

I'm doing a project on history. I need to make a list of the 10 best presidents. But I need Ideas on which presidents to put on the list, So I am asking; Who, in your mind is the best president. or even better what is your list of 10 best presidents.

Also please don't turn this into a anti Bush thread.

Would post more but I have school.

Re: top ten best U.S. presidents.

Abraham Lincoln has to be on there. I recently listened to a biography about his leadership during the Civil War and I was amazed. The man held America together during a crucial time in America's history. So I think he would be a safe bet if you need somone to be on a top ten list.

Yep, Abraham Lincoln, and you would probably also have to put in John F Kennedy, Theodore Roosevelt, Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower, and of course George Washington. Among others as well, obviously, but I would say definitely include these. But I'm not a US-ian so I might not be the best authority on this.

Re: top ten best U.S. presidents.

I would add FDR, Abe Lincoln, JFK, Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Harry Truman and George Washington to your list. FDR was the President who got us out of the Great Depression. He also was the same President who led us to war against the Axis powers in WW2 and helped keep the American people united in such a hard time. Abe Lincoln was President during one of America's toughest times, The Civil War. If was due to his leadership that slavery was abolished and our country remained united in one nation. JFK was another good President because he was there to get us out of the Cuban Missle Crisis. If he did not act the way he did, there could have been a nuclear war that would wipe out all of humanity. Theodore Roosevelt was an important figure in Amerian history who helped regulate the industries with acts such as the Meat Inspection Act. Woodrow Wilson was the President who led us in WW1. He kept us out of the war as long as possible and when he entered, came at a good time considering the Triple Alliance was about to win the war. Harry Truman showed great leadership as President when he made the decision to end the war in Japan. He had a huge burden on his shoulders to help end a war that had been going on for 6 years and he acted well by choosing to drop the A bomb without hesistation knowing that the war might've gone on for several more years. Finally, theres George Washington. He was the first President of the United States who helped us become independent from the British Empire. It is all because of him that we are this way right now. Anyway, I hope that helps you, if I think of anything else I post it.

Re: top ten best U.S. presidents.

Abraham Lincoln would be my first reaction, but I think it's been covered.

Ronald Reagan: He managed to put the U.S.'s economy on a steady incline for his terms as President, he was a key part in liberating an ENEMY of the United States, Russia, and he was shot. That last part is important because everyone that did something special got shot. (i.e. Lincoln, Kennedy, Reagan. They were all greats and they all recieved an assassination attempt.)

Re: top ten best U.S. presidents.

I thought of two more that you could use Eisenhower and Jackson. Eisenhower was a general who led Allied forces in WW2 and was president during the Korean War. His leadership helped us get out of that and he also helped the country during the begininng of the Cold War. Jackson was President before the Civil War. His time as President was overall well done and he also helped the nation during the Nullification Crisis. Hope that'll help you.

Re: top ten best U.S. presidents.

Kennedy: Established the peace corps, symbolic of the time, handsome, assassinated, civil rights

Reagan: Ended the cold war, tore down the berlin wall, made jelly beans a house hold treat

Lincoln: Ended slavery, kept the union in tact during the civil war, gettysburg adress was a famous speech

Franklin Delano Roosevelt: Longest serving U.S. president, ended the great depression, lead U.S. during WWII, established the league of nations

Thomas Jefferson: Developed many of the ideas that make U.S. style democracy great (All men created equal, unalienable rights given by God, freedoms, etc.)

Washington: Led us during the revolution, first president, established many traditions that other presidents must follow (swearing in, 4 year term, etc.)

Lindon Baines Johnson: Led America in an unpopular war, succesful domestic policies (strong economy)

Andrew Jackson: First democrat, first non-aristocratic president

Harry S. Truman: nuked Japan, kept the communists at bay

Madison: Smart (dont know much about him, wikipedia is a good source)

Eisenhower: Great general during WWII, established interstate highway system, integrated the public schools

As for G.W. Bush, its way too early to decide if he was a great president or a horrible one. Immigration and Iraq will decide his fate.

Re: top ten best U.S. presidents.

Thanks for the help. Here is my list
1.Franklin D. Roosevelt – FDR pulled the U.S. Out of the great depression. He got Americans working. Some people said that he just made jobs to get people off the streets and payed very little to them. But Americans needed jobs. Also the Projects that he built are still improving our lives today. He also was president during WWII.

2.George Washington – Our founding father, Washington led the Revolutionary War. Every man wanted him to be king. But he refused. All presidents accept FDR fallowed the Idea to serve at most two terms even before the constitution was amended. Washington also knew the Problems between the North and South. The reason why he is second on my list is because People know more about what he did before he was president than what he did when he was president.

3.Tomas Jefferson - The Principal author of the Declaration of Independence. One of his major events during his time in office was the Louisiana Perchance. A political philosopher who promoted republicanism, and the separation of church and state.
"I think this is the most extraordinary collection of talent, of human knowledge, that has ever been gathered at the White House, with the possible exception of when Thomas Jefferson dined alone." - President John F. Kennedy as he welcomed forty-nine Nobel Prize winners to the White House in 1962

4.Theodore Roosevelt – Roosevelt regulated many businesses including the Railroad and meet processing industries. He also pushed for the passage of the Meat Inspection Act and the Pure Food and Drug Act. These acts protected citizens form unsafe working conditions and unsafe food and drugs. He also perfected the environment form pollution.

5.James Madison – The war of 1812 was fought because the British Navy was capturing American sailors and drafting them into their army. This war was fought to prove the independence of the U.S. It showed other countries that the United States would not be pushed around. People believe that this war was a mistake because we knew that the British was passing a law to prevent capturing American sailors. But Truman did not know what the British were doing, the only thing he knew was that the British was attacking American ships.

6.Harry Truman - Truman's presidency was eventful in foreign affairs, starting with victory over Germany, the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the surrender of Japan and the end of World War II, founding the United Nations, the Marshall Plan to rebuild Europe, the beginning of the Cold War, the creation of NATO, and the Korean War.

7.Woodrow Wilson – Woodrow Wilson tried to keep America out of WWI But Germany pushed America into war after attacking American ships and trying to make a treaty with Mexico. But personally I think that the U.S should have entered the war earlier. Because Germany continued to attack U.S. Ships even after they said they would stop, and they tried to sign a treaty with Mexico to get Mexico to attack the U.S.

8.Abraham Lincoln – Lincoln wanted to keep the Union together. Even though he was against slavery he would have kept it to keep the south from succeeding. He freed the slaves to get the abolitionists in Europe on the side of the Union. Because Europe was mad at the Union for drafting immigrants into the army as soon as they stepped off the ships at. Lincoln plan was to have the supreme court declare the law against slavery constitutional as they did in the Dred Scott decision. Lincoln was going to let the southern states rejoin the union with very little punishment. Its amazing how a lead bullet can change history.

9.Dwight Eisenhower – well Eisenhower was in office, he preached a doctrine of Dynamic Conservatism. Although he maintained a rigorously conservative economic policy, his social policies were fairly liberal. While he worked to reduce the size of government, contain inflation, and lower taxes, he simultaneously created the Department of Health, Education and Welfare, and joined congress in raising minimum wage from seventy-five cents to a dollar per hour, and extended benefits of social security to 10 million more Americans. He said that the United States would defend countries in the middle east from communist attack.

10.George W. Bush – During 9/11 Bush gave America support. He gave everyone hope. He also showed that we will not give into terrorist acts. He also started hurting the terrorists that planned the 9/11 attacks. It is my personal opinion that the United States should have entered the war with Iraq, Put the problem we have today is that the army stuck restrictions on the people living in Iraq (ex can't pass road blocks without a pass) well trying to stop terrorist attacks these people in rebelling against the restrictions. The guest speaker that we had in history told the story about the family he was living with. he said that one of the sons was killed in a car bomb, and the daughter was training to become a suicided bomber to get revenge. For some odd reason that just does not make since to me.

Re: top ten best U.S. presidents.

^ Bay of pigs invasion

The CIA trained Cuban exiles to try to throw the Cuban government, thinking that the people of Cuba will join the revolution when it starts. The 1500 exiles instead faced an army of 20 thousand. When the Cuban exiles were defeated, the Soviet Union told Cuba they will defend Cuba with their own weapons. JFK learned about the operation nine days after he was in office but gave the approval anyway.
