.avi Files

Okay, I'm hoping somone can help me with this. I have troubles with my computer and .avi files. I use WMP for general purpose. Sometimes, it plays them fine, no problems. Other times it will say "Media Play can not play this file type" when I try to open it. And still other times it will give me that message half way through playing a video and stop. I have the most ecent updates of MP, I have divX player (which I down loaded when it wouldn't play avis at all) and I have quick time. But regardless of those, why will MP only sometimes play avis and how can i fix it?

Maybe you need to update your video codex.

VLC - If this player doesn't play your file, then I'd be surprised.

Well thanks guys for the help, but I'm still kind of curious why it would play some avi files and not others.

The only possible reasons I can think of that it can play some .AVIs but not others:

1. The file in question is corrupted.
2. You don't have the necessary codec.
3. Windows Media Player sucks.

Those are all pretty "duh" answers, so they can't really be of any help, but I do recommend VLC as Vero posted, because it can pretty much play every video format.

Start Media Player Classic

I'd go with the choice of: Windows Media Player sucks. I use Magix for pretty much everything I do video and audio wise.

Download the free installation and install DivX Codec. It will intermingle with WMP and allow you to play .avi files. If you don't mind not using WMP, however, just use Quicktime or DivX Player. I'd recommend VLC player though, it's great.
