Re: What operating system do you use?

right now I'm using vista, but I'll be upgrading when windows 7 comes out. I normally wouldn't have bothered, but Microsoft was offering a huge student discount, and I'm just plain sick of vista.

Re: What operating system do you use?

I was running the original version of XP on a old dell P4 with a gig of RAM. I've just barely installed TinyXP I have Foobar and 4 tabs in Firefox open right now, and I'm only using 223 MB of ram.

In short, TinyXP is the ♥♥♥♥.

Re: What operating system do you use?

Windows Vista Home Basic. I'm upgrading to Ultimate when I get the money for it.
I've had Vista since January of 2007 and I have not had one virus with it.
Not one.

Every time I use XP I get trojans for some unfathomable reason. It's not just me, either. Multiple people I know will get viruses and spyware using XP from just loading ads on websites. It's ridiculous. Unless you have cracked out virus protection you are screwed.

I don't even use virus protection on Vista. Most people complain about this, but I like being able control what runs on my computer and what doesn't.

What are you talking about? I haven't had a single virus or adware with these versions of XP, unless I deliberately ran them in, say a sandbox
XP Home
XP Professional
TinyXP Rev 09 with IE
TinyXP Rev 09 without IE
TinyXP Rev 09 with drivers slipstreamed on

Re: What operating system do you use?

I've been using Windows 7 Professional since Friday, so far I like it better than Vista and XP. I actually like the UI changes, and I haven't had any problems with drivers for my hardware.

So far it seems like a solid Operating System.

Re: What operating system do you use?

So uh, I decided to check how much adware and viruses I had after two months of flamboyant usage on an out-of-date Windows XP without antivirus and antispyware.

I used malwarebytes, Spybot, and Nod32.

Results: 1 tracking cookie (tradedoubler) that does nothing
nothing else. not even a registry entry.

So yeah, you can tell your unix-wannabe artsy OS'es that are freebsd rips that they have serious competition by eight year old operating systems that aren't even up to date. I'm going to celebrate by starting CD Art Display, which is a freeware program that outperforms CoverSutra which costs $$$ extremely hard.

*giggle*

Re: What operating system do you use?

The only time I got a virus on XP was from a hardcore pornography site. The only other time is when I used one to hack another computer, and of course it got picked up and I got alerts about it.

I'm now using Windows 7, too. I'm finding it very good.

Re: What operating system do you use?

I'm using XP. I find it very good in many ways. I will upgrade to Windows 7 soon. The problem at the moment is finding a removable drive to store all my files on.

I'm a Mac guy. I have been for a few years now. I also enjoy long walks on the beach in the moonlight while listening to Meat Loaf.

Re: What operating system do you use?

I'm contemplating getting the $30 student discount for myself to replace my XP (just for gaming since I use Ubuntu full time). I'm dead broke though.
