RAM chip not working--

OK, to say it short and simple:

I did something to my RAM chip, and I know what it is, but does this affect my RAM chip permanetly?

The mistake I made was somehow take of 2 tiny little cylindrical fuse-looking thing on it.

TO say it long-wise:

I was curious about the inside of my computer, and I opened it up. I decided to check and see if my older HD could work, and my other RAM from another computer would work.

It didn't, so I tried my G-ma's broken Inspiron's dual 1GB chips. Unfortunately, they didn't.

Skip my other mistakes and I chipped those 2 cylinder things.

So, is my RAM chip broken forever, or is it fixable at all? It was a 512MB one, and was half of my RAM!

by chips you mean modules.

the PCB board on the module has multiple chips on it.

and I'll be honest I don't know what "cylinder things" are. do you mean a capacitor?
there usually aren't any standalone capacitors on memory modules, at least none that would be sizable enough for one to make out.

my advice, assuming the memory in all these cases is physically compatible. take out what you currently have and try the 2*1GB modules all by themselves. might need to set them one slot apart from each other.

FYI if you actually did damage the RAM and if it were physically fixable the cost of fixing it would exceed the cost of buying new RAM. RAM is cheap, 1GB of DDR2 is as low as $15

I think it was a capacitor. But the thing was 1MM long, and maybe 1/4-1/2MM wide. OR smaller.

Pictures would be a huge help if possible. Even google images for like "broken ram" or something.

I looked for awhile, not even finding a picture of the correct RAM.

Sorry.

I can describe it thought:

It is a 512MB Dual RAM from an Acer Aspire T180. DDR2.

In the top...right corner there are 3-6 cylinders. I heard something clink and saw nothing. Later found 2 of those cylinders popped off somewhere.

The RAM module is about 5-7 inches long, 2 inches in height. IT has 8 little thingies on it.

Does that help?

"8 little thingies." That's specific.

Uhm... these cylinders... what do they look like? Do they have wiring bits coming off of them? Stickers? Numbers? rounded edges?

Rounded edges, hard to tell, and nothing else.

They are actually very tiny.

Oh, the RAM chip is a Nanya module.

Aeffles: Look at my last post.

It is blue, Nanya DDR2, and has 8 black boxes on it. YOu can't see the cylinder's I'm talking about very well, though.

Roger that, missed that, sorry.

Well still, circle it in red on your picture.

sounds like he might be talking about a resistor though i could be wrong since I don't entirely understand what he's talking about. I've handled my share of DDR2 and aside from tracing the the notches on it nothing seems even remotely cylindrical.

two possible solutions are soldering on a new resistor
or buying new RAM for maybe $1-2 more.

blue = PCB color and that doesn't matter at all really.

the 8 black boxes are the RAM itself, the microchips

ANYWAYS, I can't circle it in nighthawkx's picture, as it doesn't have what I'm talking about.

Ok, I have the RAM in front of me, and I'll describe it better:

8 RAM microchips, on top of half, 4 of them, is 5 rectangular/cylindrical things--what I'm talking about-- and there is on spaced a bit farther away.

(What I mean by "on top of half" is that the RAM microchips are split into half, with 4 of the microc's on each side.)

And the other side is symmetrical.

My RAM is possible a Nanya DDR2 Dual 512MB. I looked for images and nothing.

Well, since it's partially relevant, do any of you know a good online place where I can buy a dual 1GB thing of RAM? I've tried my local store, and Wal-Mart, and my Mom is very reluctant to go anywhere else.

EDIT:

Actually, my RAM module has 2 missing, but 4 things on the left half, and 5, none missing on the right half.

If it helps, the module is blue, a product of Acer and was made in June of 2007.
