Your First Computer

I woke up this morning, and for some weird reason, my first thought was on the first computer my family ever had. So I thought, hey, I'll make a thread about it.

What kind of computer was the first one you had (or you used in your household)? Have you always had a computer around you throughout your life? If you have your own computer, what was the first one you had?

The first computer we had was a Commodore 64 that we got around '94. My parents didn't want to buy an expensive, new computer, so I imagined that's why they bought that one. Even at the age of four or five, I was better at navigating around the computer than both my parents. At that time, all I was really allowed to do was play educational games, seeing as I was staying home the year before Kindergarten instead of going to preschool.

I can't really remember the first computer I got. I believe it had the Win95 OS on it, maybe Win98, with a 1 GB hard drive, a poor graphics card, and no sound card. It was quite possibly the slowest PC I had ever used. A few months later, though, on my thirteenth birthday, my parents bought me the computer that I still use to this day. It's a HP with XP, a Celeron processor, 128 MB of RAM, and killer speakers. (I can't remember the exact specs; I'm not using at the moment.) I eventually upgraded the OS to Professional and put an additional 256 MB stick of RAM in it... It's five years old now, though, and I'm in desperate need of a new computer.

OK, Go!

My first computer was some old Mac. I don't remember the specs for it as I was only about 6 years old at the time. Later my family made the upgrade to Windows computer around 2001 and we got windows ME(joy). That computer is still at my house, though now it has XP on it, horrid computer though with only 128 ram and a video card from the N64 age. My current CPU is a laptop I got for college. It has 2GB Ram and an Nvidia 8600 GT, it gets the job done, and is much better than that first computer.

Windows 98.
Yes, kids. We had no Internet until about a bit...later.

Mine was a Windows 95.

I was 6 or 4 when we had that.

Me and my sister eventually broke it and somehow broke open the CD-Rom to get our favorite game at the time.

^ Those are Operating Systems you guys, not computers.

I believe my first computer was based around the ole Intel i486's. I can't remember what the specs were exactly, but these bad boys were around before Intel even released their Pentium brand microprocessors. So you'll have to forgive me, it has been a long while.

I had a Micron desktop with Windows 95, a 133MHz Pentium MMX, 64MB of SIMM RAM, and a 2GB HDD.

I had an Amiga, but I was too young to remember what model it was. I was lucky if the OS would start, most of the time. I pretty much used it solely for games obtained in a legal financial transaction with a licensed dealer. (ie, pirated)

No idea what sort of computer it was. It had some kickass program on it called Microsoft Cabin, and it sort of used that as a mini-OS. I didn't use it much, though.

squall24: Ewww. Windows ME has got to be the worst OS to ever exist. Buggy as hell. And I'm thoroughly surprised that the same computer could even support XP with those kind of specs.

Solink: That sounds familiar, hah. When my parents bought a new HP computer, it had Windows 98, and we also did not originally have internet. It's bizarre for me to think of days without internet, honestly.

Dark Link: That has to be... wow. At least ten years ago if not closer to twenty, right? Intel i486 started being produced around '90, I think. I wouldn't remember the specs, either.

Jodd: Amiga? I have honestly never heard of that. To Wikipedia!

Panique: I don't believe I've heard of Microsoft Cabin, either. I'm curious about this, now, too. I get to learn new things today. (:

Oh god...I dont even know what kind of computer it was...
I just know it was in the mid 90's when we got it.

Then we got one with Windows 98, which was pretty good.

Then I got my own computer in 2001 or something like that.
Finally this last christmas I was presented with a new HP Desktop, with Windows Vista.

first computer family had... not sure what it had but I'll guess

this is back in 1993(when i was 4)
Packard Bell
486 or similar
4 or 8 mb RAM(just a guess there)
<1GB harddrive
Was basically just trashed. My mom's friend said it needed a new CMOS battery(one of those $3 watch batteries) and my mom thought it'd be expense/didn't know what to do and I was 10 when that was done. Looking back I wish she'd kept it I'd have liked to play with it a bit more. Perhaps salvage the case and power supply...

next family computer
Compaq
AMD K6 II
64mb RAM
bascially a POS with faulty hardware out the dor

first computer I had to myself was
PIII 450mhz
128 mb RAM
8Gb harddisk
ATi Rage 128 something.

not entirely sure on the rest of the specs there.

then there was the horid refurbished HP system I had which was basically a POS which ended up being salvaged for hardware
Athlon XP 3000+
512mb RAM
onboard Via graphics
160GB WD harddrive(which died)

which was remade into
Athlon 64 3000+
512mb RAM(reused)
80GB seagate drive
Radeon 9250
At that point I thought I really had something. Then I got more into computers and related technology and an insatiable hunger arose. It's horrible. It's an expensive addiction.

first computer I completely built from scratch:
AMD Opteron 165
2GB RAM(Samsung UCCT ICs in it)
7800GT
150GB Raptor

then I sold it and got what I have now which is in the sig. Will likely be getting two of the 300GB Raptors in the near future as well. plus a potential upgrade on the video card.

It didn't compare to my Commodore Amiga 500 back then. I mainly used an Amiga for Music and Art.

My first computer was an apple IIe. Way way back in the day. Sometime in the 80's was when we got it. It got put in my bedroom (I shared with my brother), so it was kind of my computer (my dad bought it for us to play with).

My first computer that I actually owned was a custom built one. Specs:

p4 1.8GHz
512mb ram
gf4 ti4200 128mb
etc, etc

Windows 98 v.2
128 MB RAM
30GB Storage

Not very good compared to today.

Seeing as the technology is nearly ten years old, there's a reason for that. =P The computer my dad uses has those same specs, except that he's somehow running Windows XP Professional on it... It's horrendously slow.

The first computer my family ever had, that I can remember, was some sort of old Macintosh. I don't know what kind; all I remember was it had a greyscale display.

Then when I was...oh, 7 or 8, we upgraded to a PC with Windows 95. I think it was a Dell. Don't know the specs, but it was pretty much standard-issue for the time.

I also own a Commodore 64, but I got that from my grandfather so it doesn't really count.

^ I really want to buy a Commodore 64. It had an enormous game library, from what I've read, and old-school gaming, whether through console or computer, is my thing. Plus, I'd love to go back to my early childhood through the medium. (:

Yes, memory, not RAM. HDD space could be considered memory. I've talked to a lot of people that have referred to HDD space as memory.

Taking into consideration the age of the computer she was talking about, it should have been taken that the memory she was talking about could only have meant hdd space.

I apologize Kemata for talking about you as if you were male. I didn't look at your post, just the quote. Since probably 97% of the forum's members are male, I just assumed you were too. Sorry
