Cut-Scene only Cannot Read Disk

I was playing Twilight Princess the other day and I got the "Cannot Read Disk" error in the middle of a cut-scene. I skipped it, played some more, but it gave me the error when I got to another cut-scene.

I took the disk out and noticed some scratches that I don't know how they got there. I read the Wii can't read scratches, but I don't think that's the problem. I got a used Wind Waker disk that came full of scratches, but the Wii can read it no problem. Plus, when I clean my Twilight Princess disk and tried it again, it kept stopping at different points in the cut-scene.

Do I need a new disk, or is there something I can do? Please help me with this!

Just get one of those scratch-be-gone kits for disks; or toothpaste. Rub toothpaste into the scratches.

What sort of scratches are they? If they circular scratches (i.e. ones that run in the same direction as the disc spins) than those are much more likely to cause read errors because the scratches run in the direction that the laser reads in.

I once had my copy of Super Mario Galaxy scratched by my Wii. Luckily Nintendo replaced the disc free of charge.

Crap, they are circular.

Will Nintendo still replace it for free, even though I had it for over a year? The manual says that the warranty lasts for only three months.

Well, one thing to try is this:

Get a very slightly damp lint-free cloth (not dry, but not dripping, either.) and very carefully rub it on the disc. Start at the centre and go in a straight-line towards the edge. Do Not clean in a circular pattern.

After you've done this let the disc dry (it shouldn't need long. If it does then you've used too much water.) then try playing it.

After all, there's always a chance that your disc has smudges that are causing the problem, instead of scratches.
