What do you think?

Well I decided to build a new system since my current one is pretty old. I'm not very tech savvy, but I like to think I have some knowledge. Anyways, I just wanted to know what you tech savvy ZUers, thought of the new setup I plan on buying once I save up enough money.

Current System

OS - XP

CPU - AMD Athlon 64 3000+, 1.8 GHz

Video - RADEON X700 Series with 256MB

Memory - 1GB

PSU - 420 W

Future Build

OS - Newegg.com - Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium DVD - Retail

CPU - Newegg.com - AMD Phenom 9600 Agena 2.3GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 2MB L3 Cache Socket AM2+ 95W Quad-Core Processor - Retail

Video - Newegg.com - HIS Hightech H387Q512NP Radeon HD 3870 512MB 256-bit GDDR4 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported IceQ3 Turbo Video Card - Retail

Motherboard - Newegg.com - ASUS M3A32-MVP Deluxe/WiFi AM2+/AM2 AMD 790FX ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail

Memory - Newegg.com - Kingston HyperX 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Retail

PSU - Newegg.com - SILVERSTONE ST50EF-Plus ATX 12V 2.2 500W Power Supply 100 - 240 V - Retail

Monitor (My old one doesn't support DVI) - Newegg.com - Acer AL2016WBbd Black 20" 5ms Widescreen LCD Monitor 300 cd/m2 800:1 - Retail

Coming to a total of $1299.

I like it, I can put another video card later on and add additional memory in the future if I wanted to, and its not as expensive as a high end computer from Dell or Alienware. If you have any suggestions, I'd like to keep the total price under $1500.

Re: What do you think?

only real suggestion is to ditch phenom.

on the desktop arena K10 in it's current form is a failure, atleast compared to the competition. It came a year late, and is far slower than it was claimed to be I was expecting it in 2006 and I thought it would absolutely crush conroe. per Ghz it's ~10% slower per clock than conroe is. Vs. Intel's latest revision of the core microarchitecture, it's around 18% slower. As far as clock speed scaling, since k10 has very sensitive l3 cache and the speed of that l3 cache is linked to the system bus, you won't be getting much past 230HTT, aka 15% overclock. On top of that apparently most chips have trouble doing past 2.6Ghz or so in and of itself regardless of cache limitations. With any luck the B3 revision of Phenom will help but it's not looking good so far in that regard. Penryn on the other hand is scaling marvelously. You're all but guaranteed 4Ghz out of a penryn if you're an overclocker. For those unwilling to do the math that's around an 80% performance deficit, at least as far as single threaded performance goes. For me single and perhaps dual threaded performance is all that really matters though given my typical usage, and to be blunt for around 99% of the computer using population it is as well. Aside from Supreme commander there isn't much out there(outside of server/super computer usage) which really benefits from having 4 cores over two and on top of that sup com is about as GPU limited as it is CPU limited, and you're still able to get fairly good performance out of it with a dualie.
