You'll probably spend ~£10,000 on repairs and purchases for a PC, whereas the sexy little ****er known as the Macintosh weighs in at 25% less - at most.

The only problem you'll experience (from my opinion) is this:

I've only ever had one kernel panic, but that was with a fault FireWire port when I had my camera plugged in. That's once in 2 years.
I've never had to get repairs for my PC. Do you know what I have? A Pentium III based PC. I've had that thing for around five years now. Not once have I had to spend money to repair something. Granted, I have upgraded it somewhat. Which you really can't do with Mac's now, can you ;P?

Have you ever tried going "deep down" into a Mac, to try and upgrade something? Have you even tried a Mac, at all? They can be upgraded - RAM, OS, software, hard-drive, everything. Unless you have RAM that's melted to the ****ing logic board (which you won't), you're okay. I've had a PowerPC G3 Mac running on Panther for 2 years, and I have had no problems [apart from the kernel panic] in that space of time. Just so you know, I also have 128MB of RAM, and a 366MHz-clocked processor. Sounds slow, but with OS X, it's blazing fast. <3

You can upgrade a mac, but it's risky. You need to make sure what you're buying will be compatible with OS X - ESPECIALLY video cards.

Now, take a look at my Hackintosh. I have Tiger 10.4.9 running on an HP dv8040us, an AMD system with 1GB of ram and two HDD's. THAT'S a Mac attack for you. and yes, kernel panics do come from time to time, but they're actually pretty rare. No rarer than in Vista, at least, and Vista is installed on a machine made for it. The Darwin bootloader does act a little funky, though. I think that's more my fault than anything else.

As for the guy's comment that OS X is like Linux, I do agree to a point. The Terminal, however, is the only tru similarity - a lot of the commands are the same. The Terminal in OS X and Linux are probably derived from the same thing.

Thinking of trying to upgrade to Leopard, but it'll be tricky. Might just try and upgrade to 10.4.11.

I meant expansion-slot wise. PCI, AGP, EISA, etc. Most Mac's hardly have any expansion slots. Not to mention they're limited amount of support that just makes things even more restricting.

I realize that most things on the motherboard can be upgraded; but like Jason pointed out, Mac's don't really have the support outside of Apple's first-party manufactured line. And their parts certainly don't come cheap either. The prices are way too expensive for my taste. Apple isn't giving buyers enough bang for their buck (then again, they never really did).

Re: I might be getting a macbook tomorrow... !!! ???

Update on the MacBook purchasing situation: I have heard that Apple usually releases deals in late January (after MacWorld) on the sale of MacBooks (e.g. 07 was MacBook + iPod Nano for free) so I am going to hold off buying for another two weeks and hopefully pick up a bundle like that. I am getting excited.

Jason, you sound like the Mac king.

I did some reading and you're probably right. I also recently heard a rumor that there could be some upgrades to the Macbooks. In any case, it's always good to wait after Macworld to see what Apple will pull out of it's hat.

I hope you enjoy, OSX is a solid contender for general use.

I'm the type of person however who is a cheep SOB. My theory is that a standard desktop/laptop which dual boots windows and linux/BSD offers more compatibility, more stability, increased flexbility, and unlike OSX such a solution is not crippled for the sake of user friendliness and "platform" stability and costs around half as much(assuming you add in your own RAM).

Apple is one of those companies which basically rides off the innovation of others, wraps up such innovation in a prettier package and then drags down the rest of the industry and the launch newer iterations of the previous product but with cheaper parts and a higher profit margin(apple has the highest profit margin in both the portable media player industry AND the x86 PC industry)
I should love them, they're the epitome of cold hearted capitalists(something which I am) and yet for some reason their anticompetative practices turn me off.

Apple Macbook Pro 15.4 Inch 2Ghz Intel Duo Laptop Review in Laptops at Review Centre
And I find that a decent deal for it is $1844.

go to dell or HP and you can get an effectively identical configuration for almost half the price. Literally. If you hate winblows(who doesn't) slap on BSD or linux
